    “Have your cake and eat it too” is really commonly misunderstood, probably because the order, but basically its saying you can’t have this beautifully constructed cake as a display piece, while also being able to eat it.

    • @katekeeney2703
      @katekeeney2703 2 месяца назад +72

      Specifically because the phrase originated in the middle ages when sugar was incredibly expensive and only bought by the rich. Many people who were moderately wealthy would purchase enough sugar to make a cake or pastry of some kind, and then have that pastry out on display for a long period of time until the cake itself started to fall apart, but if you were wealthy enough (typically high nobility or reeeeaaaallly wealthy merchants), you would have enough money to purchase enough sugar to be able to make cakes regularly, and so you could have your cake (for display) and eat it too. So it's definitely got connotations about having an abundance of wealth, of some kind.

    • @murlocaggrob2192

      Apparently it comes from Pliny the Elder. He wrote about Pompey the Great's cure for poison, which Pliny advised to be taken with a grain of salt (literally). Given how dubious the cure was even to Pliny and how much Renaissance writers loved referencing his work, the phrase came to be appended to any iffy advice.
      So glad that a video with bi-curious Dale-on-Dale roleplay sent me on that history lesson.

      @alexakelley2353 2 месяца назад +48

      The origins of the saying are actually disputed and not totally known, and this is not one of the common theories. It’s most likely due to people in the theater being very superstitious, so they believe “good luck” will bring bad luck. There are a lot of working theories but none that I could find mentioned being in the “cast” but then again, we don’t know, so could be!

    • @thehousecat93
      @thehousecat93 2 месяца назад +6

      The major theory I’ve heard over the years is that, in ye olden days, audiences would storm the stage after a good show. The curtains on the sides of the stage are called the legs and during the storming of the stage, they’d rip these curtains, breaking the legs. More likely than the cast explanation, but still very dubious.

    why would someone bite a bullet if they were about to go through a painful experience? the answer is they wouldn't, the phrase comes from paper tubes on the back of bullets with gunpowder in them that people would bite to get out and load their gat.
