Excellent Steve, working in a bank like I have for the past 34 years, I always noticed the bank advertisements on TV, great to see some more from the golden age of adverts.👍🏻
I almost forgot the classic "Does you does, or does you don't take Access?" Great to see that again! Good old Alan Wicker and Roman Atkinson in the Barclay card ads! Funny how ads could make general banking seem interesting and exciting. I've worked in a number of banks over the years, pretty stale stuff in reality. I'm glad I'm a Civil Servant!
For any other American who might be watching this, an RSJ is a small version of a steel beam, a joist, used in construction. I'm surprised that they allowed that Louis Jordan parody with the lobster. I love how UK celebrities will do commercials. US celebrities will almost never do them outside of Asia.
I just got this distant memory of a metalwork teacher at my old school telling us RSJ was a Reinforced Steel Joist. Thanks for reigniting that old memory! 😁
I remember when I first got a barclaycard, when I was 20! Many years ago. They didn't just give them out like they do now. No contactless, just a metal machine and a bit of carbon paper for your transaction. Nice to see a time when banks tried to attract young people, so hopefully they'd be customers for life.
Your vintage advert videos give me a greater nostalgia trip than videos about old tv shows. Maybe it’s because tv adverts are so time specific and tv shows are often repeated?
I've often wondered why that is and I think you're about right. They're very time specific, and they're also a form of lost media too - things you never thought you'd ever see again; it's not like you can stream them on netflix or something.
I Do love these videos... there's still a banking, or building society advert out there I remember but I can't remember who.. early memory of someone opening doors and going into rooms before finding the right room...
There's something about that John Hurt-narrated Anglia advert that seems more like a confectionery advert than a banking advert 😄 I expected that blue pyramid to turn into a Terry's Pyramint or a Walnut Whip 😆
Yes, difinitely. I do one double-length compilation each December, and I have enough Christmas ads stored up for at least the next two years! I'm aiming to drop the next one at the beginning of December 2023.
The _Clerical Medical_ ad is a really good parody of old TV newspaper adverts, especially for the likes of the _News of the World_ , but seeing it nowadays makes me not so much appreciate the parody but consider how damn weird it seems to advertise upcoming news stories like that, sure in the knowledge that your story couldn't be read about instantly elsewhere. The pre-internet world is a weird place, man.
That Halifax advert is pretty cool

I always feel a bit weird seeing Royal Mail ads on telly, being a postie myself.

Ohhh I get it now, Angus Deayton. He was a good voice.

Halifax got me with their account aimed at teens.

I was wondering who it was, thank you.
I got the same vibe. 😂
Ooh this is heavy on finance that benefitted from being connected to the euro economy
We've burned that bridge now, unfortunately.
Hello, are you going to do any more Vintage Christmas adverts, etc? Many thanks

@RetroSteveUK that's brilliant. I love your vintage TV ads, which brings back so many memories from my childhood.
You almost felt like you could trust them 😬😬
Almost 🤣

Who was the woman in the Barclaycard advert?
I just rewatched it. Apparently her name is Doctor Lovely.
@@RetroSteveUK I do remember the advert and I'm sure she was someone famous, but I can't remember the actress's name.
@@MarkFraserWeather Yeah, I recognise her too. I just have no idea who she is.
