  • This video orientation available on the free Plum Village App plumvillage.app/ is offered by Brother Phap Dung.
    -------
Every Friday evening during the Rains Retreat, an orientation is given to new arrivals at Deer Park monastery. Instead of focusing on the technical part of the various mindfulness practices which are practiced in the monastery, senior Dharma teacher Brother Phap Dung shares in this video more about the spirit of the practice.
The richest fruits we get from the practice, Brother Phap Dung says, are insights. In a space of slowing down, silence and non-judgement, we will come to see and to understand who we really are. We learn how to love ourselves more, and doing so, we simply will be kinder and more loving persons in the world outside too.
When you practice mindfulness at home, you are invited to find a sangha, a local community of practitioners. Because together the practice is easier to sustain. And at the same time more powerful and more joyful. You can find a local sangha here ➛ plumvillage.or...
We hope this orientation supports you in your practice at home, or with your sangha.
Enjoy your practice! Grow your love!

I work as a counselor for high risk young people (teens and twenties). The one thing I am hearing more anymore that I had not heard earlier in my work is their despair at wondering whether it is worth their getting to love and know and support themselves and, by extension, others, when the world, in their view, is on fire with no end in sight. For the first time, as well, I feel I don't have the right skill to answer these fears. Young people who don't fear the future, but fear there will be no future. I watched here to gain some skills to help them calm and continue to live in the present, doing our best, accepting our feelings. Thank you very much for the teaching.

Hey Ms. Susan--so totally agree with you on kiddos who have this anxiety about themselves, their lives, and the world in general. I am a pediatric physical therapist and have lots of referrals for young people with 'pain' somewhere in their bodies and they can't always identify where it came from or what to do about it. These young people who should NOT look or act or have the posture of a 60-70-year-old are coming into clinic looking, acting, and having the body habitus of folks in their 60s and 70s. Smart phones have a lot to do with it for sure, but my gut feeling is that there is such pervasive anxiety about life in general (pandemic/lockdown/keeping up with the Jonese/TikTok) that are manifesting as internal embodiments/chronic pain syndromes/adverse childhood events and really doing a number on their individual psyche which makes you really wonder what the collective psyche will be 10 years from now?? Hang in there, and keep doing your important work with young people!!!

Actually when you are less productive you get more insight.
I remember watching a segment on 20\20 quite some time ago, but the thing of it is it still holds true today if not even more so. The segment was about the countries and how many days off a year they had. France was 42, Italy 50 (ha) and so on. When it got the United States it was 2 weeks , and it showed and man and woman at the playground with their child on their supposid time off they were on their laptops working even on their vacation. Long end of the short of it they said that those with less time off to clear away their minds were more productive.
Look it up its an interesting study. I think it applys to what he is saying.

Oh to be able to attain this level of mindfulness and wisdom in this lifetime...I'd be happy to learn how to just sit and be quiet for 5 minutes, let alone an hour or so. Thank you, Plum Village for sharing the Dharma and Thay's love of humanity with the world.

    I enjoyd this talk.
    Thank you brother!
There is one thing that I do not understand.
There are so many NDE stories on internet.
Why do you monks talk that after dead you become a flower or a cloud or...
All these NDE show that our individuality is staying!

So another question that came to mind at 46:52 when Brother spoke about one coming back as a flower or mushroom; does Zen Buddhism, or Buddhism in the Plum Village tradition of interbeing, not espouse human rebirth as the 'goal' of this precious human life so we can come back and fulfill Bodhichitta of serving other sentient beings as is seen with Mahayana Buddhism? You can't really do that as a mushroom, can you?? Or am I missing something here? Thank you in advance!!

    • @tylerwhitney3443
      @tylerwhitney3443 7 месяцев назад

I actually never hear them talking about Rebirth. Which might be wise as it seems hazy to pin that down
