if marcus needs help im a local bounty hunter in redmond i can get his money back 1 way or another
@@Komplexkai somebody has to do the work around here
I'm sure you will collect the money but will want 80% of it to do so, LOL
@@justind1118 no just 15 percent im just a local red neck doing gods work
@@autograph415😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah, I wouldn't go this route if I were you. Using bounty hunters tends to get people lawsuits. I would do the collection thing or take her to small claims court. Hiring someone to threaten or intimidate or harass someone will get you a lawsuit. That's far more than $700. Plus, using a bounty hunter they will charge you more than what you're trying to get back, so just go to court.
The review said that they “were having a Large Party” and needed it done in a week… so you have plenty of cash to Party but none to pay the hard workers who did an excellent job on your property?? What an absolute disgrace… 😢
That wasn't the correct review they showed.
I have developed a rule: if the project is over $500, first half of payment is required to begin the job and second half upon completion. In my opinion there's more upsides to doing this than down sides:
1. It ensures that you are getting some payment upfront if the customer had any intention of not paying you or not paying you timely
2. It motivates myself and/or employees as it completely removes the stressors of wondering if the customer won't pay for all the hard work you're doing (or they're a late payer)
3. There's a higher chance of receiving full payment due to a psychological effect that if you're already invested half-in; then paying the 2nd half is a bit of an easier pill to swallow (instead of receiving one really large bill).
However, I will admit there are some downsides. It makes billing a bit more complicated and it makes tracking payments by job and/or tracking numbers more time-consuming to keep accurate. But, again, in my opinion the upsides out weight the downsides.
Thanks Mike and team for these videos. I'm loving these series and hope to see continued episodes. Also, I like the longer episodes 😉
Yep 50% deposits for bigger projects for sure
My rule of thumb is I need at least my day rate (250$) down on bigger jobs+ cost of materials if is mulch
Yeah this is what i did as well… if sometimes for $300+ jobs if it felt like the right call. 👍
I quoted a job for $2500 asked for 33% and was told by the customer that she felt unsure. I explain. To her we were on the same boat, I can put off not getting my pay on labor, but not fronting the material. Oh well
This is the rule I follow for my Automotive business especially for major work, that would cost a lot lets say 700-3k I'd get half to begin work and once Im done I get the rest or if customer doesn't pay the rest then atleast Im not screwed (I work alone so don't have to pay any employees and I own my own shop thats on my land) and have money to put toward the business and future stuff I would like to get.
A young business owner trying to make it out here. I like that you take accountability when things don’t go as planned! I think it’s awesome you explain how things work to your employees. I’m sorry there are crappy people that take advantage of you. Should start demanding half up front and half at time of service so your not completely crapped on by crappy people!
Yea, contracts or some form of written agreement are usually the way to go on things like this. No way to weasel out of it that way.
It's OK hunny. YOUR AMAZING. A HARD WORKER.❤
Um it's you're not your so
As a collector for a large roofing company, I’m impressed with this young man! ❤
add a collections fee of 20% in your paperwork and when you send to collections have them collect the original plus your additional 20% fee so you keep your profit margin.
Collections is 'meh.' Sue in small claims court. Then she has to stand in front of a judge and explain why she feels she doesn't owe this money, or just not show up; she'll lose, you'll get amount, plus late fees, plus court costs, and that will increase weekly until she pays. If she doesn't pay, you take the judgement, hire a deputy to enforce it, and go to her house and you and the deputy take that amount from her or equivalent property (value to be judged by you and the deputy, not her). I'd be waaaay more worried about this path than collections and messing up my credit; you know her credit is already crap, so why would this be a threat to her?
At any rate, good luck with your business.
@@coloradoretreats So what? Letting yourself get your services stolen from you will ALSO get passed around word of mouth. "Oooh, call this guy, he did 500 bucks worth of work and I didn't pay and nothing happened." Good advertising if you are in the simp business, I suppose.
in the united staes u cant show up to a persons house to take property to pay back a debt
@@soulsreaper7145 Not sure where you got that, but you are absolutely wrong. Once you have a judges order, if the debtor doesn't pay, you take the order to the sheriff or constable, pay them some money (which is F'd up, like paying 'enforcement' money for them to do their job), and show up at the house. The order allows you to take whatever is necessary to satisfy the debt, within reason of course.
This is settled legal procedure, practice the read/research/share process in that order.
I'm pretty sure it's after 5 days you can show up to their property. It's within your right. Although, now he has to tip toe because of the judgement and I'm sure they don't want to put that in jeopardy. However, you are wrong. Look up the laws, federal laws, and let us know! 😊
In Tennessee you can get customers for theft of service and if it’s over $500 it’s a felony.

@@BRExteriorPro I’ve only had to use that once. It’s not something I like to do but my guys deserve the best equipment and pay we can afford to give so getting stiffed for money isn’t an option.
Wow really?!? Didnt know this. Great option to use though!
@@jacobshandymantreeservicel2522 just remember that’s more of a last option when you start having to threaten a customer like that it ruins relationships fast but.. to me that doesn’t bother me when they are not paying for service and avoiding me.
@@campgrimsleyyea at that point they’ve shown they don’t respect the bond between you and the customer the work you do ur time or you in general glad you don’t out up with the shit duee

I am sorry you had to go through this I swear there are good people out there! Keep up the amazing work!!
Thanks for showing the rough stuff. So many channels make it seem like it's all rainbows and unicorns. It's not that we want to see other people suffer, but sometimes it's nice to know we're not the only ones who screw up the quotes and have to eat it. 👍
Charge 3 times for having to collect.
This young man is going to be something big in the future. It’s refreshing to see someone in his generation working so hard and taking responsibility for his business. Very impressed.
This generation? Boomers had it extremely easy. You have no idea what you are talking about
@@ZeR0Byt35 oh brother
@@SSO1025RET Not exactly refuting him at all there. It's well known that the boomer generation had it way easier than people do now.
The economy, job market and housing market were leagues above today's. Not to mention the cost of living.
Remember, you're the one who brought generations into this, not the other way around.
Back it up or shut up.
Just report her. Don’t give her anymore of your precious energy/time. She obviously doesn’t deserve your patience
I loaned a good friend's son $40 during an "emergency" while his parents were out of town. The emergency turned out to be a need for drugs and the parents refused to pay me back. I was at their front door every day for three days at dinner time. They finally paid me back.
Great video ! You got this Marcus, you’re killing it man !
14:16 you’re honestly a great boss for just saying that most people would blame their workers
This is why I only take credit card payments or cash upfront. With cards i charge half the money the second I arrive on site as soon as my boot steps on the ground I run the card for half the payment and charge the last half as soon as I’m done.
Man, we really appreciate the transparency!
They paid after he left the note on the cone 👍🏻 he said collections takes 20% of the money they collect which is his profit margin so good for him for not having to use them
Glad to hear things worked out
I love the way your present your hours, labour and profit!
That’s some great editing!

Take the rough with the smooth My guy!
Some days are just tests!
…Tests of mental fortitude!

Might I suggest a certified letter next time this happens, instead of a note left in the driveway stuck under a rock. 😉
This was the first video I’ve seen of yours. Wow! I thought this was going to be a typical mowing video. Wrong! This was more of a journey. It was the good, bad , and ugly side of running a business like that. The last part of the video, lot of businesses owners would have said we could of done more and been more efficient. You stepped back and looked at the situation and realized it was your mistake and owned it. It takes a strong person to admit a mistake like that. Keep up the good work!
I am pleased you finally got paid 😀🙏.
I love your transparency 😊
I run a small lawn maintenance company i have had clients add stuff on that wasn’t included in the original quote and complain about the services its irritating but u have to work with them or just walk away if they refuse to pay im not ruining my reputation over a 50$ call for a mow because of being unprofessional and losing your cool but i love your videos mike and i watch u for advice!
Make them sign for the additional work.
It can be demoralizing how sometimes making mistakes snowball into bigger problems… but facing them head on and course correcting is a valuable lesson. 22/he base pay is insane though man. Even if you dont get P4P i think thats still valuable.
Well done young man!! I pray for much success in your near future!!!
1. Signed contract.
2. Pay time on arrival or prior to arrival.
Thank you for putting the link to the full video. 👍🏾👍🏾
Hey man, good stuff, good luck out there. Be strong.
Man never lose hope..Whatever it is,time's gonna sort everything out!❤
I understand too well the reality of underestimating a project. Not so bad on small projects but expensive lessons in what "not" to overlook next time when it is a large project. Not making the same mistake again helps take some of the sting out of it though. Thanks for the "bad" along with the "good". :)
Loved this one! My guess is a hedge trimmer got him. Hope he is OK!
@coppercreekcuts that’s really crazy if he let his fingers come anywhere near that, good theory though for sure, not sure what else it could be
Thanks for sharing !
Someone who keeps pushing, even when it's hard! 👍🏻
I liked the honesty at the end and you just taking it on the chin. At the end of the day we make mistakes from time to time. We are all human. Good luck to you and your future endeavours with an attitude like you have you will make it far.
I’m looking to eventually groom dogs on my own at home and I’ve been told by several folks in my circle to take payment BEFORE service for our particular field of work because of the amount of times people will try and NOT pay after services. People are sure great huh
It's not an easy line of work. I watch the "Girl with Dogs" youtube channel and it doesn't look easy. But with pets everywhere people need the service, so there's definitely money to be made. Good luck with your small business.
Intro was so good 😂
This kid is such a sweet person and he doesn't shy away from manual labor if it pays good. Great guy! Hope he makes it!
Small Claims Court is your best bet here I believe. It works here in Texas, anyway 😊.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great quality video. Very professionally done‼️ Glad that they finally paid you‼️‼️‼️
She ended up paying after the note on the cone
The sad background music and sob story for gardening lmao
I wish you guys would go more in depth on the subject of collections. When is it worth doing it? How do you go about getting started? What did he write on the note to convince the customer to finally pay?
Probably just warned them that it would be sent to collections after a certain period of time. That's when it will affect their credit score and some people will avoid paying anything until it hits their credit.
@@MC4TWT Thanks for the reply! That message makes sense. Super simple, pay or go to collections by the end of the week.
@@javiers1018 I would probably say something like, "company policy states that after X days, it must be sent to collections. I wanted to give you an opportunity to make the payment before that happens, so please reach out to me as soon as possible so we can get that resolved." And just be as friendly as possible about it.
@@MC4TWT I like it, keeping it professional!
If you paused the video you could’ve read most of the note. But yeah he just mentioned collections
What a good young man! Handling life. Fair pay for work!
The note 😂
6:28 if you're here from the short then 9:59 for finish. Not as exciting as I was hoping but I'm happy he got paid.
A client owes me 3k and im not sure how to go about this, it sucks and its such a shitty feeling
Go to the hood and find someone you can pay to collect. The first thing is it's now three times for having to collect, they will take care of it, just don't ask how they do it.
CERTIFIED LETTER. THEN, SMALL CLAIMS COURT.
Put a lein on their property that's what I do and it works. Instead of loosing their property they usually pay pretty quick after that then I black list them!
@@orangepeel3465 the problem is i live in california and the law wouldnt be on my side BUT it ended up working out after i wrote him a letter threatening to take him to court. I gambled because it could have backfired on me if he had reported me to the cslb but I won.

Sounds like deflecting onto one of your own, people work a lot harder than older folks these days when it comes to skilled jobs
Glad he finally got paid from that customer.
You are a great guy. If you were my son I would be very proud of you!!! Your parents did good
Those days suck, when you know you're working for free, or worse. The other good days make up for it... Ultimately, working for yourself is the greatest gift you can have in this life
really appreciate you talking about your problems thanks
Take her to court! Hopefully you have a contract. If not please operate with a contract in the future and require 50% deposit on all jobs.
I cant believe someone paid you $180 for that first lawn.... That's robbery without a gun.
What do you think would be a fair price? Based just on the part of the yard shown in the video
Thanks!
If Marcus needs help I’m a local assassin in Redmond and can get his money 1 way or another
When a client doesn't pay, they go on a do not answer list. I tell the other people I know in my area to not work with them. I had one who waited a few years and pretended to be someone else lol.
Keep it up....i did this in hs and arbor work. I also paid my mom yard work when i moved away and did her leaves in the fall
Love your entrepreneurial spirit and perseverance.
This right here is one of many reasons I DON'T miss WA.
keep up the good work quality work done
This is crazy. I'm so sorry. My husband and I just started a lawn care business in central PA. This is one of our worst fears. We've had to start requiring 1/2 down when we have bigger jobs or we have to rental a loader or anything else. At least if they decide to do this, we'll have half.
❤❤❤❤❤so glad I watched this. I’m so glad you got paid. Yard work is very hard work
... This is where you have no choice but to take her to court because if you removed all the work you did, the law says you would have to put everything back in the original condition before the work started, which is impossible. Sorry for this... I was in a similar predicament that lasted for over 2 years. Finally got the money in the end but it was painful and the amount was in the high $thousands.
I ran a lawn care company for 5 years and gave it up last year. It was successful as hell and had a ton of potential, but I couldn't get any employees that were worth a damn no matter how much I paid. I needed to replace some equipment and just decided to call it quits. Good luck to you man, I hope it goes better for you!
Sounds like an employer issue.
Sadly this happens more often then we know. It has happened to my family and they don’t know what to do
Just a good honest hard working dude with a great outlook on life I really hope he stays strong and wins in life and his business continues to grow 😎🇬🇧✌️
Bless your heart my husband does yards and sometimes he doesn't even get paid they take advantage because he is just a nice guy they even went as far as to pay him and checks then turn around and cancel every check. At the time he was putting them in my account and well my account got close in my husband paid me of what I had in my account
There is a law. Theft of services. Save that for last resort. Usually bugging them works.
Never ask the customer to give you a 5 star review like he did at 9:22 in this video. Other than that, good stuff Mike. This guy is like your west coast brother with long hair.
Why don't you?
Why not? He was very no pressure on it.

Mike, I’ve started my lawncare/landscaping business in May at 15 and I’m bringing in $750-$800 a week. But I’m trying to save up for a truck for when I turn 16. However I’m wondering when should I upgrade my equipment/setup or keep saving for that truck. currently my 16 yr old brother works for me and we put 2 mowers a leaf blower, weed whacker, bags and a few Jerry’s cans and stuff in the back. I recently just bought a trailer to do mulch jobs and more services like fertilizing, I also have 2 21 inch mowers. However I’m looking at getting a 30 inch mower so I can go to some bigger lawns and make even more $ in less time. So just wondering what your thoughts were if I should keep saving for a truck or keep upgrading my equipment?
I already commented on your last comment last video. Buy what you need/dont have and need… aka a truck. If you get a bigger mower to do bigger properties or commercial stuff how will you get there? And you wont like very professional walking up to an expensive property with a push mower and gas can in hand…
@@jacobshandymantreeservicel2522 hey, yeah I appreciate it but want to see what Mike thinks. And it’s still gonna be a bit until I get a truck because I’m still 15 and my birthday is in January…
And why not ask them when do you want to pay? Or today when it’s done? By cash by check?
Oh, and before you start, you give them the updated estimate with the weather and how they’re going to pay and they have to sign it before you start.
Yes, have a printer in the truck.
Have it say that failure to pay results in a 25% service fee.
This is extremely reasonable, and all those people will have absolutely no problem signing that.
I always make it absolutely clear to my customers that an estimate is not always the exact cost!! If they want exact costs I always add 20% on the estaimate.. but you do a great job, just subbed, gonna watch the next one!
Or give an estimate on x number of bins or debris and then say x amount per additional bin, etc.
I'm surprised you don't have the riding mowers to make this quicker and easier mowing.
My gosh you have great work ethic
I wish your company was in my area !! I can't find lawn service or a landscaper to save my soul !... Good job , you should be proud!....😊
So this is the Patty Mayo of lawn care. ✅ Got it.
This kid has an amazing attitude!
Do you take Cash??? If so who collects it and how can you properly account for all Cash received from customers without Employee's helping themselves to extra Cash that should be going to the Company??
Those little Exmark 21”s are taking that tall grass down to finish cut in one pass? Or is this movie magic 😂 I get that it’s slow going because your dumping bags constantly but still that’s impressive.
I send 3 notices (one once a month) and if those dont get a response then they just go to collections, I don't play anymore, I also require half for new clients up front
My son started the same business in our state. I manage all his paperwork and money for him and the guys and gals who work for him. I watch alot of judge judy and learned a few good things.
1. Always take pictures or video of the property before and after.
2. Always have a signed contract with the customer.
3.Bring everything to court. When you take them to small claims you will win.
4. Don't let these pieces of crap get to you or consider giving it up.

when u have to send someone to collections should be a 20% fee add so u dont loose out, its them not holding there end up, if they fail to pay make ur money by adding a 20% collection fee so u dont loose out.
Collections and affecting their credit.. so you take a social security number before you start working?
@cory5233 the collections agency gets that with the basic info they start with…it’s not as difficult as we imagine
@@seanslawns you can't affect credit without a social security number though.
@@cory5233 “the collections agency gets THAT(social security number) FROM the basic info the landscaping company provides”
Landscaping companies should definitely not have peoples SS#… what are you on about? But if they have all your other information, aka First an Last name with Address they can probably get it themselves or still report it to the credit bureau…
What do you do with the slow to pay customer the next time?
Just came across your channel. If you’re ever losing money in your business small tweaks make a massive difference. For example if you have a POS asking for tip is a good way to add more revenue especially if you’re the actual person working. Also increase profit margins but small tweaks 2-3% cushion on bigger projects over certain thresholds example $500 add 2-3% $1000 add 3-4% $1500 add 4-5% ultimately these small changes will help you spread risk better so you have less loss days. Also teaching staff should have its time and place in the schedule without taking time away from customers.
Keep it up
