  • No matter what you're towing, you NEED to know your tongue weight so you can get there safely. It doesn’t matter what you put on or in your trailer, whatever it is adds to the GTW or gross trailer weight and is, therefore, altering your tongue weight at the same time. It is so important to know how much your trailer weighs along with how much your load weighs because you need to keep your tongue weight in between 10-15% of your GTW. Anything outside of that range is an unbalanced load and can cause things like trailer sway or jackknifing, both of which can be very dangerous.
Along with knowing your gross trailer weight (GTW), beforehand you must know your GVWR or gross vehicle weight rating so that you are aware of what the maximum amount of weight you can tow altogether. If you do not familiarize yourself with the GVWR of your vehicle, you will be unaware as to whether or not you are overloading your vehicle.

Is it recommended that this calibrated instrument be subjected to the constant barrage of jarring, jolting, rotational, torsional, and harmonic abuse from pulling a loaded trailer?

do you calibrate it with the empty weight first? Or is it @ 0 with no trailer, tongue weight of empty and tongue weight loaded.

It would be the weight applied to the hitch by the tongue. So don't subtract the empty weight or make any other adjustments.
