- I had a handful of mics left over from a session, so I figured I would do a snare mic shootout to see how they sound.

Always loved the Audix i5. This confirms it.
damn the d6 sounds actually cool on snare. wouldve never thought
Oh damn snare! I validé the D6 as well
Right on!
That Soyuz pencil was amazing on snare! Lot's of fullness.
Check the retail...no wonder.. ;).
The frequency curve of the D6 makes it almost sound like a mixed snare. Might try mine out on a snare sometime
Thanks. The Soyuz 013 sounded best to me - so full, clear and articulate.
Definitely, but pay attention to the amount of hi-hat bleed it brings
@@dummy0000000 That's a NICE hihat bleed though;)
I think the 57s, the i5, and the 7B all do a good job giving an honest representation of the snare sound in all the cases. The Soyuz 013 also had a pretty pure sound in all the cases, might be cool to do a Soyuz/57 combo and mix and sum them.
The Pyle sounded the most open to me. It almost sounded like an overhead was just barely mixed in.
I'm totally surprised considering it's a budget mic.
nice and bright if you're looking for lots of high end on the snare
I have used this mic for a couple jobs (Snowboard Magazine and tracking for 1 Kustom Built tune) with zero complaints. Placement is ALWAYS key, I think.
Soyuz for me... Then I looked at the price!

Thought I hated the D2 but now it was'nt too bad. Impressed by the SM77. Always liked i5 for snare, and WOOOOW that Soyuz 013 is sooo wonderful!!!
Audix i5 for me.
The D6 also seemed ready to go. Already EQ'ed
The Pyle was surprisingly good! The Audix D2 and the Soyuz 013 had the more crack in my opinion.
The Audix i5 really caught my ear. I think it would really cut through a metal mix...
Aside from a little more kick bleed the D6 sounded surprisingly good
Pyle and D2 for me - nice one, Ryan!
Thanks David!
I love the Pyle mic. I bought and modded a bunch of these a while ago and they sound great for the price.
ericdano how did you mod it? Is it the same mod as was done on this one you think?
What mods did you do?
@@creativesoundlab ruclips.net/video/vYR4aHqzoRM/видео.html Though the last 2 I bought were wired correctly.
The most striking thing is that, in a mix some of the mics have such a different timbre, that they make the kit sound like you swapped snare! To me, the Soyuz and the AEA are just incredible. I generally shun mics with heavy built in EQ.
Really digging that Audix ADX and the Soyuz 013
Whoa the D2 sounds awesome!Same with the Soyuz, tho a tiny bit more expensive hahah!
The d6 hands down sounds the best. Its a shame that it bleeds so much.
So, to my ear this mic sounded best for sure, by itself. In a mix it will sound dull and less... way less fun. It takes the fun out your ska, punk, phycho or any band. Your snare mic wont sing like a snare. It'll mix in with your bass drum mic in a bad way. You want pop and noise reflect. Make your snare sound like a good poppy snare. You want a little reverb with your snare. Natural or not. Use an sm57 if you're not sure. You cant go wrong. A little goes Eq goes a hell of a long way.
Add the same amount of top end eq to the 57 and the “bleed” would likely be very similar...
I liked the D6, the 57, the Sm7 and the Soyuz. Nice video. Fun hearing level matched signals that allow you to actually compare the mics. That's something we all appreciate in your shootouts. Thanks for another great video Ryan!
D2 has some nice bite and compressed sound to it
And another win for the 57!
to me, d6 actually sounds surprisingly good!
wow, i like how a lot of the ribbon mics sound on snare. might try one of my ribbons on snare more often. might have to really move my hi-hats out of the way though
My nonprofit has a limited budget and we always are in the market for affordable gear. We recently partnered up with a local college audio production program to conduct a mic shootout using a variety of affordable mics on percussion. The sE v7x really turned some heads. I have been told the CAD TSM411 turned in some surprisingly good results, although I have not heard the wav files yet. Considering you can occasionally find the CAD for under 30 bucks US, it is worth a listen. And by the way, the CAD is built rock-solid.
the pyle sounds amazing... just like a 57 but you don't have to boost some highs in post, great mic!
I honestly can't believe how tight the Pyle sounded. It doesn't capture as much lower overtones/fullness as the more expensive examples, but it has more sizzle than the sm57 I usually use. I've got a snare that needs exactly that. For the price I'm gonna snag one just to try it out.
That D6 sounds rad! Never would have guessed that would have so much top end that cut through!
This snare drum now sounds like a metalhead kick drum.
Useful stuff! Really liked the weight and natural sound of the Soyuz
Great comparison and very helpful for any sound engineer
Just goes to show that I should really start considering what mic would work best with a particular snare tuning, and what combinations of mics would work well with each other too. Thanks for the vid!
All sounded good and usable to me except for n22 , bomblet and 421. Proof that a good drummer and a nicely tuned snare are the key to a good drum sound. I liked the d6.
wow, the variation is insane!
the pyle sounded great
Nice!
I have a soft spot in my heart for low priced gear so I hope I'm not too biased when I say that Pyle mic was my favorite.
I'm surprised by how good the D6 sounds in the mix! Personally I love the attack and definition of the condensers.
you were in the room, you are the only one who actually knows how the snare sounded in the room. in your opinion, which mic was the best in terms of high fidelity - capturing the natural sound of the instrument ?
The Pyle didn't sound bad on any of the samples really. Maybe a bit too hyped in the highs, but it seems like it'd cut through in a mix. The 57s/77 never sounded better than OK. The Audix mics were back and forth. The D6 sounded fantastic and terrible at times.
You know, even though it didn't sound very nice on the ring-y snare, the D6 sounded killer on the dampened snare. I've seen a ton of mixers do videos that show them boosting hard at 200hz to get the big, fat snare sound, but the D6 just comes with it.
You’re right! It was great on the muffled snare!
Since your overheads and rooms already make most of the sound most of the close mics don't make a huge difference. In the mix I liked the extra brightness some of them brought to the table. I always love a 421 on snare for this in combination with ribbon ohs. Overall I really liked the 57 and I'm with everyone about how fat the Soyuz sdc sounds
I would like to hear the audix d6 in combination with the sm7b, to me the sound like they could complement each other... can you give it a try?
I really like my I5 on the Ludwig snare I have...Sounds nice and open. running it into a warm 412 and into a Art vla...perfect sound for me...and I got a triple ply Aquarian head and upgraded snare wires
Audix i5 for me. I use it all the time on snare. It's a little like a 57 with a more open top end. I always have to add a ton of top to a 57 so the i5 just gets me a little closer.
Audix i5. Pops in a mix exactly where I want it to. Just a touch more open than the 57 which is choice #2.
Wildcard was definitely the d6. Could totally get something killer with that.
Very impressed with the d6!! The i5/57 was my favourite
Pyle was my favorite by far, but the Audix i5 I liked a lot as well
I like the Audix d2 the most.
Yeah it’s a nice mic
Another great video! Ryan, You just delivered a ton of cool snare sounds. Some EQ in the daw and these should be useable for everyone.
Thanks Dan!
Very surprised at how little a difference there was between stock SM57 and the Pyle in the context of the full kit. I bought handful of the Pyles for some drums and I think they'll get the job done
The D6 sounded the best but the 57 with the moon gel on the snare sounded great too.
What's really interesting is that different mics sounded better depending on what pattern was being played.
holy shit, the d6 rips
couldnt anticipate that at all
sm7b if you`ve got it and you know it won`t get dammaged by a bad drummer. 1- listen to the hi hat rejection. 2- listen in context. 3- listen to what frequencies you need in the actual snare mic. Plus you have switches in the back to make it brighter if needed.
dont like sound of 57 on snare top, any model
audix i5 sounds great
soyz sounds awesome!
For my surprise, the SM7B was pretty dark sounding lol
Is it weird that I think the Pyle sounds better than the actual 57? I honestly hate the way a 57 sounds.
It kinda sounds like a 57 that's been EQ'd.
@@BigFatCock0 It kinda sound like there is another 57 under... half the price, sounds like two mics
Hi,
can you please place the Soyuz 013 above the kick drum similarly as in the ribbon video? I'm wondering if the Soyuz wouldn't actually be the best solution for minimal mono jazz drums.
And as always your videos are enormously helpful to me thus keep up excellent work.
Cheers from Denmark 🇩🇰
Hello,
I love the way your overheads fill out the sound! Could you please tell me what mics they were?
Thanks.
A little . . marchy? The D6. Like, I was surprised by that too. That's kind of a VERY application-specific mic. It's like playing bass through a DS1 into a Princeton or playing guitar through a car stereo into a PA tower with an 18" woofer and a horn, worth a try because what isn't, but no one would've expected good results. I was, however, unpleasantly surprised with the evident performance of the I5 though. It's been my main snare mic for a while now, but I'm questioning the wisdom of that decision. Not that it sounds bad, but it doesn't have the character that I thought it did, it is very different. I'm gonna go upstairs tonight and fuck around with this old MXL Fox that I just found in a storage bin buried under paperwork. It was like 50 bucks for a 3-pack of those about 12 years ago, so I grabbed a couple for mobile recording, but they were actually better than they should've been for that price, or maybe mine were better than they were supposed to be. I bet that thing would smash the snare right up through your eardrums, but it'll also take eq really well and I could compress and distort the shit out of it. Maybe it works out great. If I find any of the others, I'll send you one. One of these days, I will be well enough for long enough to come out and work on something with you. I live in Connecticut, so ......... but I got like a million crazy ideas.
The pyle sounded best out of the 57 bunch. Really liked the d6.
I'd probably just use SM57's to mic up the whole set. They just sound right. Crazy Pyle wasn't too bad either... Surprising.
D6s sound great on everything! Kicks, racks, floors! But if you ever get the chance, try a Telefunken M80 on snare, its stunning.
Hello, do you remember if the kick microphone was the beyer m88? Greetings from Argentina.
I don’t remember but that tight attack at 3k sounds like the m88. My other common choice is the re20 and it doesn’t have that attack.
y do I like the D6 so much ha. Phatt
I really like the sm57 shure I feel that it has more attack.
Was hoping to hear Beyer m201, but still a wonderful shootout 👌
Yeah, I need to get one of those.
Audix D6 sounded the best to my ears. Not so much the direct sound, but its open range would leave a lot of room for EQing. The Pyle, as cheap as they are, came in second. JMO.
All the Audix mics sound better than the others.
Thought the Soyuz 013 and the ADX-51 were leagues better than the rest, with the 013 being the clear winner of the two. That's going on my to-buy list. D6 was funny. Thought the modded 57 and the 77 sounded almost identical, and much better than a stock 57. Wasn't crazy about the Pyle -- high-midrangey and lacked depth. Really disappointed with the SM7 and the 421. I'd heard good things about them on snare, and thought they were the worst. 421 sounded crazy-scooped, SM7 sounded like it was being smothered with a pillow.
Honestly, my favorite recently has been an EV CO4. They're cheap (at least now), but they work really well in my mixes.
I tried it on a snare recently but i didn't like how the bleed sounded. Very "rough" sounding bleed from hihat and ride that made things a bit more complicated.
@@seitsen That's fair. I've considered trying a crashguard or something for the hihats, but between the gate, eq, and full mix context it hasn't yet posed a real issue for me.
@@littledrummerboyph it's a good mic nevertheless. I've used it on guitar cabs.
Lets face it, they all sounded very useable. Would have to just go with a 57 to be honest
Haha the classic!
best: md421 and D6
Also great: Bomblet, sm57 and D2
I was shocked when my ears were drawn to the $13 Pyle.
yeah like ngl D6 sounds the phattest
The Pyle and the I5 stood out with a bit more air on top over the others.
After 14 you put bas mic or what?
I wonder if a beta 52 would have the same vibe as the D6
I was actually surprised by the D6 when the snare was wide open, to be honest! I don't think it worked with the Moon Gel, but wide open it actually sounded pretty good. Favourites for me were the standard 57 and the Soyuz SU-013. What's the mic you have on kick? It sounds great!
Kick was a re20 into a Pacifica preamp
@@creativesoundlab Oh cool! Never tried an RE-20 on kick. Pacifica is definitely a great pre! I like using mine on drum overheads, room and piano. I'll have to try it out on kick at some point.
Man the Pyle is surprisingly good. I'd blend it with a 57, might sound good
I don't own an Audix i5, but I may soon!
Is it me, or did the pitch of mics 12, 13 & 14 raise?
SM57..because you know where it sits in the mix. The other mics will require EQ adjustments and who has time for that? Lol
i5's are well known to be a better mic on snare than a 57 if you need more top end.
Two things I was surprised by - how good the D6 sounded and how horrible the SM7B sounded.
I wasn't surprised by the muffled undefined sound from the SM7B, consistent with what I experienced.
I liked the 421 and the I5 myself..
Changed tuning halfway thru?
The Audix mics all seem to have weird midrange peaks
The i5 has always bugged me on snare drum, especially when it's a long, ring-y snare.
As a close mic, I'd always go with 57 or sm7... Has anyone tried the beyerdynamic m201 on a snare?
M201 is great on snare! I have a few, top Notch.
@@a.dejager7062 I've gotten my self one since posting. Works amazing, now my 57 lives on the snare side.
I preferred the SM57, i5 and the ADX-51
They all provide a different colour
The Tab/Funkenwerk mod ... Just me or fat and wonderful tone with minor bass drum & hi-hat spill leakage ¿?
57 or 7b, depends on the approach

the Pyle PDMIC 78 is a fucking sleeper I tell ya bud!! so nice for so cheap!!
TBH with the exception of the 421 and maybe i5, condensers do a much better job than dynamic mics.
WOW...hold on for a minute there...I've never even hear about a Pyle before and I thought that it sounded awesome. Then I google it, just to find out that it is a super cheap knock off. Oh well, you live and you learn!
BUT, maybe the trouble with the Pyle is that it is harder to get more out of it with an eq, compared to an sm57 for example...more options afterwards.
That’s what I’m learning too. I use a ton of cheap mics and most of the time I’m fighting with harsh frequencies in my mix
I thought the d6 sounded amazing…
I've always used a 57. I've tried SM81, I5 and a few others. I was really surprised by the Pyle! I could use that without a bottom snare, it was so bright. Thanks for this! Of these, I think actually the Pyle would require the least EQ by itself. Am I crazy? Maybe.

i5 for me i guess
