    I Own a Pair of Shure SM81s. I absolutely love them for overheads. If on a budget I would recommend the Shure PG81 condenser mic as well if you're a Shure guy like me. The PG81s sound good as well for overheads.

    Love the SM81's used them many times over the years. Mic placement is paramount, of course along with other major approaches with audio production...it all makes a difference!

  • @TheHouseofKushTV

    Gonna be 'that guy' and say that as a drummer and as an engineer I prefer the "bad setup" to your "correct setup". The former had good focus and punch, and the tone of the kick was rounder and deeper. The "good" setup is oddly skewed to the right and the kick sounded anemic and papery.
    Also, can't agree that "when you're mixing, you want the drums to sound like you're sitting at the drumkit." I can't speak for anyone else, but when I'm mixing, I want the drums to party with everything else in the arrangement in a way that maximizes the emotional impact of the song. Nothing else matters, not image, not stereo, nothing. Sometimes that means one mic overhead and another out front, sometimes it means 12 mics all over the damn room. But of all the things I'm focused on, a realistic picture is generally the last thing on my mind, I just want shit to pop out of the speakers and hold the listener's attention from downbeat to fadeout.

  • @djabthrash
    @djabthrash 5 лет назад +11

    2 crucial tips for the next time you're doing a similar shootout :
    1) For the mix : PAN from an AUDIENCE perspective, not from the DRUMMER's perspective, since people watching this video are looking at you from the front all the time !!!
    2) Play the same beats for all the mics, so that we can compare the same material from one setup to another.
    These 2 points are very obvious and i'm very surprised you missed them.
    It's really hard to compare stuff when what you see being played is panned in the opposite direction, and when you play a tom fill for setup A and then play a hihat snare thing for setup B.

    • @analogbellwick351
      @analogbellwick351 5 лет назад +2

      FWIW, panning either audience or drummer's perspective is not set in stone. I've always panned to the drummers perspective since I play drums. The last project I worked on I panned to the audience perspective and ended up changing it back a month later because it was just too weird to me, even after all that time. Only drummers are going to notice which way the drums are panned, and if you're a drummer listening to the music, maybe you envision yourself on the throne instead of the audience.

    • @djabthrash
      @djabthrash 5 лет назад +3

      @@analogbellwick351 As i said before, panning from a drummer's perspective when you're watching the drummer from the front (audience perspective) is counter-intuitive !!!
      I always pan from the drummer's perspective when mixing studio albums and such, but from the audience perspective when mixing live stuff.

    • @analogbellwick351
      @analogbellwick351 5 лет назад +2

      @@djabthrash Oh yeah, I didn't see you explicitly said that. I agree it's a little disorienting in the video watching the guy.

    • @jeffboles2470
      @jeffboles2470 3 года назад

      Audiences wouldn’t ever hear a stereo spread of the drums, in the room or with a PA. They stand at a great distance so any stereo imaging is unnatural. A drummer, sitting on the throne, right in the middle of the kit, will have the only seat in the house with a true wide stereo spread. You should always mix drummers perspective, end of story.

    • @djabthrash
      @djabthrash 3 года назад

      @@jeffboles2470 Not for a VIDEO that you're gonna watch from your computer or smartphone, with STEREO headphones or speakers.
      Basically it equates to listening to a record, but watching the musician play at the same time.
      If the toms are panned reversed of what you see, it will be annoying.

    SM81s are great. Mids are so clear and no harsh top. Nice to get the Kick and Snare in the center too. One more angle to consider.

  • @zacdrake
    @zacdrake 6 лет назад +1

    The SM 81's definitely have an enhanced presence in the mid and upper freqs, while the cheap mics have a bit of a muffled sound. It really depends on the end usage, desired results, and last but not least, your budget. For reference vids, semi pro demos or facebook posts, the cheap mics work. But, if you're trying to make top notch drum covers, doing sessions or any other pro level project, definitely get the best mics you can afford. If your livelihood depends on it, get 'em even if you can't afford them, lol!! There's plenty of 0% financing out there for large expenditures!! In my experience, most pro level gear will hold up over the long haul, while the knock off's tend to die right in the middle of a big gig!

    I have actually used an sm81 in combination with an sm57 on top of my snare. Just make sure you use the -10db switch on the mic lol. Absolutely transformed my snare drum sound and gave it the color and life I wanted. Only problem is the sm81 is a bit bulky, making it difficult to find comfortable space for the mics to sit while having my hats and snare where I want them (and my rack tom). Enter: Behringer C-2. For what these mics cost (a matched pair costs 80 bucks!!). They have been absolute workhorses. Dropped, stick shots (oops), and these things just keep going. I use one on my snare. A matched pair of Lynx SDPC-2 with the cardiod capsules for spaced overheads. Beta 91 in my kick, 57 on my hats, another c-2 under my ride (it does a nice job of giving the kick drum and floor toms a little more oomph too). MD421 on my first floor, Beta 52 on the second (if you haven't tried this, DO EET, wish I had an audix D6 to put on it. And I use an old AKG C3000 for my room mic (the one with 3 switches), pointed 180 degrees from the kit (the side that picks up more high end). This REALLY transformed my dull, spaceless mix into something that sounded completely different. Steve, you should make a video of how adding a room mic can completely transform the sound of the kit :)

    This was a great video. Great comparison and you got those Earthworks Mics you are gonna love that sound congrats on that acquisition. I currently use the Shure PGDMK6 And a Shure SM 57 for my snare drum. The kit comes with two PG81 condenser Mics while not as warm as the SM 81 series they still give a good sound. And as you say mic placement is very important. Now Patching these average Mics through a UAD APOLLO 8P and using the Neve 1073, UA 1176 and UA 610 plug-ins records my drums beautifully. My studio kit Canopus RFM / Istanbul Agop.
    Thanks for this video you ended a debate I had with a buddy of mine

    what's "wrong" with not using overheads?.. I'm about to obtain mics for this process, and I am of course trying to narrow down a purchase choice that will get me the most. I could get the Shure drum mic thing which has no overheads... However, I have one sm57 and may just buy a KSM32 for a single overhead and do an old-school mid 50's or 60's recording style.
    On other hand, let's say I had a beta 52 on kick, and sm57s on snare, floor tom, hat and crash/ride (yes a 57 for each of the four)? How would that sound having no overheads?.. just close and tight?

    I have a question. When you see a spaced overhead pair, alot of the times the ride side mic is lower, but ultimately my question is, obviously they both should be the same distance from the snare(or some people use the kick as the center point) but my main question is, how do you decide what height to place one side VS the other? Like I dont mean what height in general, I just mean vs each other?

    • @katielowen
      @katielowen 4 года назад

      James Cassidy I’d set the height of one overhead and then position the other overhead the same distance from the snare but on the other side of the kit. I usually start with the hi hat one. Then you can try experimenting with the overall height of both, fine tuning where you want them (over cymbals more, further out for a wider stereo spread, etc)
