- I was playing my retropie, when i found out about SNES MSU-1 games, so i investigate it and i made this video.
It's the closer thing that you can have to a CD games running on the Super Nintendo.

There's a MSU-1 version of killer instinct that is MUCH more advanced than the one you showcased, not just a LOT more videos and special sounds, all SFX are of considerable higher quality, added sprite size and animation frames, just amazing what the proper add on for the snes could have added.
Hi Frank,
Really, i was not aware of it....
Thx for letting me know....maybe for a video in the future....😀👍
@@RGF did you see it? wish more people would update more games.
now that we no longer have Rom chips' storage limitation, a lot of video games data can now be stored in SNES cartridges, and that means we can make video games with more details, huge backgrounds, more levels, big sprites, and smooth animation. a good example of that is the new super Mario Land (Game boy version) ported to SNES with Nintendo Ds sprites ruclips.net/video/3LuG0ljQGaI/видео.html
Is there sfa2 with lo loading times?
@@tunkunrunk the super mario land uses stock snes hardware
no chip since it's programled to run on a special cardridge where you could download games on it at stores
no chips added
The SNES CD would have been awesome, but we effectively got it in the form of the PS1 so we really didn't miss out. I'm glad though that I can play Chrono Trigger with the PS1 FMVs but with the instantaneous loading times of the SNES 😂
True....nintendo made playstation possible 😉
Not exactly the PS1 was arguably more advanced than the SNES CD that was in development. For starters I’ve read somewhere that Sony originally was planning to make the PS1 a 2D powerhouse (similar to what the Saturn was) but shifted focus to 3D graphics after seeing arcade games Sega was making using blocky polygonal graphics in games like virtua fighter. That to me says the snes cd would have offered a more advanced version of snes type games with greatly improved audio quality and greater capabilities with regards to sprite scaling and rotation. Integration of a chip similar to the super fx chip to help render low polygon models may potentially have been on the cards but the big limitation would always be the relatively slow snes cpu which would have bottlenecked any attempts at really ambitious 3D graphics for that time. I’m not much of a PlayStation fan but being forced to go it alone really worked for Sony as far as hardware development goes because they weren’t encumbered by being tied to existing hardware developed in the late eighties which freed them up to embrace newer technologies that allowed them an opportunity to offer something that at the time felt fresh and new and to some really hip.
I recognize that Zelda FMV intro... That was Aiepathy's Zelda fanimation!
Indeed....looks great on the snes 😀
Putting the music from the killer instinct soundtrack CD into the game is epic!
Indeed it is...
The fan community does what Nintendon’t. I remember when the snes/super disc all in one prototype was unearthed and making headlines. I had a feeling it would get reverse engineered so that an after market super disc could be commercially produced. MSU1 is pretty close to what I pictured. I think it’s really great that there are enthusiasts so dedicated that they actually made a device to make it possible to play these enhanced roms on original hardware. And long may it continue. Getting to replay familiar games with enhanced audio and added fmv cut scenes is awesome enough but I could see people pushing it even further to get sprite based games running on snes that were on other consoles such as rondo of blood or symphony of the night. Heck who knows maybe a port of the unique PS1 version of street fighter alpha 3 could be possible 🤷🏽♂️
The best is still to come....there's alot of possibilities 😀
Thx 4 your feedback
@@RGF I’m looking forward to it. Long may it continue
@@unstoppableExodia i will bring it to the channel....when it happens...
@@RGF perhaps it could be worth subscribing to your channel then....
This is neat, and bravo to the creators. I personally think I’ll stick with the Chiptunes though :)
😁✌️ thx 4 watching
Allways with interesting topics, mate! Loving the content!
Keep it up!
Well i try....its not easy on the crowed world of youtube....
Thx 4 watching my master....
no way that Zelda cutscene could be included in the canon because Link replied to his uncle with words instead of going "Hiyaaaa!" or just following him home silently
Keep us posted please =) e obrigado pela partilha!
Super interessante....
Mike obrigado por passares por aqui....
@@RGFany idea how many games there are for this system?
They have these for Sega Genesis cartridge games now. Just find the supported cart and pack burn the CD or set up the iso with your flashcard and it will play CD quality audio with your game. Pretty cool
Although I have to say I still love the original soundtracks of most Genesis games since I'm a big fan of the sound chip Sega chose. But there are a few good games that have spotty soundtracks that I would like to revisit with some arranged music. I would love for somebody to do in arranged version of eternal champions.
True, but the genesis had the sega cd doing something similar back in the day....
But i agree that some fans are realeasing awesome games for it these day's...
Thx 4 watching 👍
Agreed. CD quality audio with a lot of the games of this era just feels wrong to me. Haha
I'm in awe with the sound
😀 cd quality 😀
This is a kickass thing imagine if MSU1 was a thing during launch too.
When the snes was release?
@@RGF Not sure, was MSU-1 made by Nintendo or was a aftermarket chip?
It's more a software change....for allowing bigger size roms....
For that, back in days....you have needed a CD add on....😀
@@RGF ah makes sense, how come some msu-1 patches only work on bsnes and not snes9x 1.55+? for example: Super Castlevania IV
That's wierd....
A good short hand for SNES-CD system is the 'Super CD', rather than the 'Super Disc'. Image if Rondo of Blood PC-Engine CD was ported over to the 'Super CD' or 'Super DVD' now I guess, MSU-1.
😁😁 Super DVD is nice .....
I enjoyed Batman Returns as MSU1 on my PS Classic last night! It is crazy and amazing!
It was a great brawler, with the movie tunes makes it even better 👍
Always learning on the RGF channel ,)
Cheers
Well....i try....

Great stuff like always bro 😃✌
Thx bro....i try my best...😀
The best MSU1 game I can think of to really show it off is probably super road blaster.. it's a FMV game.. on your SNES!
Need to try that one....thx 4 the tip
This is amazing!!
Thank you so much.....👍
Obligado. Excelente video.
I wish those compositions of music where better on Super Castlevania 4.
Everything can be added...its just a matter of wanting....😀
Thx 4 watching 👍
Bem interessante amigo, bom vídeo! Abraço, bom domingo com a família. 🙌🏻
Obrigado Marisa....igualmente
Well, we still waiting for Final Fantasy series (this is most likely the most suitable game for that enhancement)
It will come eventually 😌
Hello I have a question that MSU1 PCM rom package that you leave the download link in your video works if I put them in a folder in the Everdrive FXPAK PRO / SD2SNES cartridges
Hi,
You need to patch the original rom...then you can create a folder and put all the files inside....👍
@@RGF And how is it to patch the original roms, the truth is I am lost, thank you very much for answering my questions
Did fans compose the music? Because Nintendo didn’t do it. I can imagine that for some SNES games they used arcade music, like Killer Instinct
Yeah....basically fans patch the games with music remixed.....or the true arcade audio tracks, like street fighter 2.....ultimate mortal kombat.....fatal fury.....and so on....
I heard that the sfa 2 version is pretty amazing.....need to check it out....
Thx 4 watching 👍
Some games had their soundtracks released on CD. Which in some or maybe all cases is the tracks recorded in much higher quality and with much richer sound than was possible through the snes sound chip
Mind blown. I never knew
😏
7:36 ended up on mario kart wii
😁😁 indeed....
11:13 I play zelda redux of this.. same intro video and everything, just adds some stuff.
Zelda is always a masterpiece :-)

Too bad he's been gone for 2 years now :(
😮💨😮💨
While it is sad that nintendo was sooo heady to not releasing the snes CD ( if only they knew that sony was continueing on the project without violating by using the name ps1,then nintendo might would,ve think twice before canceling the project) BUT at the otherhand am glad they did not releasing it because it forced game developers to deal with those limitations and find way’s around it such as sound streaming or using the sdd1 chip to store 4 times more data on those rom carts etc,,,
Also i don’t think it would,ve sold more then 4 million units, but who ever knows that if sony was still partnering with nintendo then we may would,ve a N64 CD based system.
That's history indeed.....thx 4 watching 😀👍
is MSU-1 only for Snes and megadrive ? is it available for nintendo 64?
The NES also have it, in the way...on the N64, as far I know, nothing yet...
Do you think something similar can be applied to N64 games? (MSU 2/64) I’m sure the more powerful hardware can allow some file compression.
Its going to be more complex...because the n64 has security features...but never say never 😀
But said security features (Like the CIC chip) are defeated already.
@@jamessmithandgarrettsmith3623 true....but it stil needs to be implemented...
Why not the Everdrive 64 X7?
You need an extra chip to handle the memory mapper...to trick the hardware.....an fpga chip will do the job...
I dont understand why people keep using pictureso of the snes cd rom and nintendo playstation for the msu1 pictures
It's the closest of a snes cd that we will ever get....
@@RGF oh. I can sorta understand now.
😀 thx 4 watching 👍
Hello And how is it to patch the original roms, the truth is I am lost, thank you very much for answering my questions
It ia.....i will a video on to patch the roms, stay tuned on the channel...👍
@@RGF Thank you very much I will be very aware of that video
Do some Friday The 13th Nintendo exclusive when Nintendo did with the company that ditch Sony to make their CD Add On.
oooooooooOOOOHHH!😮😮🎉
😀✌️
So what's the difference from the cartridge and CD in graphics?
Graphical wise, not much..its more about the audio and fmv, due of having more storage...
epic
Truly....and was only a small taste....there so many games out there .....
I meanwhile got the sd2snes...that allows me to play those games in the real hardware....😀
Soooooo.... what’s the purpose of the snes CD addon??
More storage....for better music, multi media content 😀
Revolution X should be on the list
Let me check it....😀
There would've been a Nintendo DS or gameboy that used the PSP disc, & that would've been a portable gamecube with more content & features UwU
That would be something interesting to see...😀
“In SOVIET RUSSIA, VIDEO GAMES PLAY YOU.🤷🏻♂️” 💁🏻♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Well, for mother russia.....
And the rest is history, as they say😁
Ola,
Is there street fighter alpha 2 with no loading times for this?
?
Yes....to used on everdrives 😀
@@RGF so I just need krikzz snes everdrive and snes not this msu1 unit for sfa2 hack no load time work or do I need msu unit or does everdrive have msu1 chip?
While it is interesting, most games just swap out SNES music for enhanced music. I wish someone could actually improve the actual games (even though it may be a tall ask!).
They also add FMV to snes 😀
These days we are getting also NES nested games with new audio....great stuff.
Maybe one day we will get more content has well....
Can I play this on Open Emu for the Mac?
For sure, with retroarch....👍
@@RGF But I have Open Emu as my chosen emulator. I thought I had made that clear in my original post.
MSU1 also has some "wtf" ones.. like hong kong 97.. someone took hong kong 97 and MSU1ed it.... O.o
Well it's fan base changes....so everything goes....😀👍

@@joaonitro5149 I know right..? Like.. what?
The presentation looks fantastic, but sadly, to say it didn't really bring out much of a big difference. This shows the same mistake that Sega made adding the CD rom to their system. It's only video and audio quality different, but the graphics remains the same. The MSU-1 memories size is 4GB DVD, right. It would able to enhanced the graphics a lot more, making Killer Instinct more arcade then keeping the graphics the same. Upgrade Mario Kart more like the Gameboy advance, make Super Mario World more colorful. Have Super Castlevania 4, Simon more frames animation or look more like Castlevania chronicles. So not just have video and audio, should enhanced the graphics more, add a more powerful 3d processors. Upgrade the screen size. Have arcade games import best quality
It's about the amount of storage, to create bigger games, have more selectable characters, bigger levels, more variations....but nintendo did well not to go for a cd add on.
@RGF It's a good reason why Nintendo didn't have the add-on. Not only Sega had the add-on, Turbographx 16, and Atari Jaguar. They didn't make a difference. So it's about fan games using MSU-1. They should've done something more to the game instead of changing the music or adding a video.
Can you make a video for the Sega Genesis MSU also!!!!!!!!
Yes :-) i am planning it, and i have my mega everdrive pro ready for it :-)
Thanks for watching 👍
@@RGF Nice!!!!!
Nintendo CD is real.
😀👍
It will be awesome when Nintendo after they look for Philips to make the Nintendo CD will be to make that Nintendo exclusive of the Friday The 13th Video Game improved to see what the piss port LJN NES game and most likely the Friday The 13th exclusive made by Nintendo game will be an awesome collection on what the Voorhees surname is used as Philips is from The Netherlands well it will be a Friday The 13th Nintendo exclusive only better than the LJN NES port.
Well and the rest is history 😀
Anyone know if the snes mini can play the roms?
O don't know for sure....but i don't see why not.....the big issue is the size of this games....on the limited flash size of the mini....
@@RGF yeah I did think that .big files. Looked around and yes you can
Battletoads music its worst than the original
Depends on your taste....but i agree the volume is a bit too high....with distortions and all....could be better....
Thx 4 watching 👍
has anyone used this MSU1 technology in N64 games? the limited storage capacity made N64 games to be lame. I think Nintendo should have made the N64 games CD based instead of cartridge based. The games would have been so much better if CD based
There was a add on for N64 reeleased in japan, that provided more storage....but it failed....maybe it came too late....
On MSU1 topic, i guess is just a matter of time 😀
If sony continued with Nintendo then sega would've partnered with Microsoft & we would've had VR gaming & the 3d hardware would've came early
Well....maybe 😀
Sega did partner with Microsoft for the Dreamcast
They did...yes...
Yeah and Nintendo ditch Sony and look for Philips to make their CD add on.
Hi,
In the end it all blocked because of royalties....🥲
Thx 4 watching 👍
Super Mario kart não tem custecenes no msu1
Não, mas tem musicas novas....😀
roms link is a lie it's for patches!
Well....the MSU-1 games are patches snes games....
@@RGF i know that bud just a pity someone hasn't managed to upgrade the sounds of the in game to match these quality soundtracks
