Very good video idea and I'd like to see a sequel to this in the future! One of my favorite balance patches is one for Secret of Evermore. It works along with the 2 player patch and you might argue it makes too many changes but considering how unbalanced the game originally was, I welcome it. Some things are shared XP with certain alchemy formulas so that you have incentive to use the new spell you get rather than just using the old one forever since you invested so much time into leveling it. Just a lot more balanced in general.
Fantastic idea for a video! I love to find out about patches like these. That Gradius patch left me speechless for a moment! Not exactly an improvement, but I love the Ancient Cave patch of FFV for those times when I don't want to replay the whole game, but still have some fun with its great job system in a shorter playthrough.
Maybe balance/difficulty patches are stretching yr definition of "improvement" but Chrono Trigger Level Zero is by far my favourite way to play CT. It's not a stupid grindy difficulty patch, it just disables levelling and rebalances the gameplay accordingly so that u only progress via equipment and techs. It mostly just makes the strategies that were already there more necessary. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone replaying Chrono Trigger but also maybe even for JRPG veterans playing it for the first time.
These kinds of videos are great! I love learning about fan efforts to improve old games, having been playing re-translated JRPGs for over a decade now.

This is an awesome video. I'm always trying to find what patches or changes are out there for games to kind of make them their ultimate or definitive versions. I hope you do more of these and I hope you have a fantastic day as well.
How is it possible that you make 8 minutes go by so fast!! By the end I was actually hoping for more. Couldn't believe it!! Good job dude!! Always keen to see your videos.
You can actually do the Super FX overclock without Retroarch on the SNES mini. It's a function in Hackchi. You just add the command to the command line portion of the game before syncing it over!
There's also an "air bullet patch" for Kirby's Dreamland 3 that keeps Kirby's horizontal momentum when they exhale. KDL3 is the only Kirby game where this happens so maybe it was a bug to begin with.
A couple of things: 1. Floating IPS is both a better BPS and IPS patcher, and that means you only need to fiddle around with one app for the majority of hacks out there (UPS and XDelta are ever more rare these days with the SNES). 2. It's very important to look at whether the patch requires a header or not. I suggest using TUSH for adding/removing headers if it's needed to apply a patch, it's as one-click as it gets for that utility. 3. Bsnes-mercury is completely obseleted by Bsnes HD, which is a further updated version of Bsnes that's also faster and with HD Mode 7 options. Also the SNES9x core can overclock SuperFX if your comptuer is too slow.
@@acmnin2146 Perhaps, but the header ordeal is mostly for older patches anyway. Almost everything is non-headered nowadays, and usually if a patch is old enough to require one you can just add it to a copy of what you already have.
Just a heads up for the Scrolling Fix on Secret of Mana has a game breaking bug where if you bring up your menu while one of your characters if off the screen it makes your menu enter cycle loop that you can't get out of. I had 5 breaks during the first 10 hours and lost an entire dungeon's progress twice. So I ended up removing it as awesome as it is to make the flow of the game feel better, if you need to heal on the fly and open your menu with out thinking when a character hasn't come down to your screen, you are done.
it is amazing, i've been having a blast with it. a lot of just using gmae genie and getting as much on screen and seeing no slowdown, ever, not a once. so impressive now. hope to see many more legit slowdown fixes for other games. sparkster, castlevania 4, r-type, etc
Here's an idea that I'm surprised nobody has done. A Super Mario RPG hack or patch that fixes the various mistranslated names. For some reason, the translators for the game used the Japanese names for certain enemies items & locations, as well as weird names that always bothered me as a kid. For example: Yoshi's Island is referred to its then Japanese of Yo'ster isle, Cheep Cheep is Goby, Koopa Shells use their Japanese names of Nokonoko shells, Kamek (red Magikoopa) is just a nameless Magikoopa, despite referencing the events of Yoshi's Island & Exor's mouth is inexplicably called "NeoSquid".
The name Yoster Island was already out of date, since the Yoshi's Island game, released a year before RPG, called it Yossy Island. Toadstool's name should also be changed to Peach, a retcon from Super Mario 64 (which came out the same year as RPG).
There's a rom hack that does this now created a few months ago. My previous comment got removed for using a link I think, but it's the same site as most of the hacks in the description.
Helpful to learn about these fixes, makes the snes library a bit more complex to find the right one to download. Thanks for the info! Also was stoked with secret of evermore about the dog, sad it wasnt multiplayer as well.
I had most of these on my SNES Classic. Very fun to have games fixed, especially SG&G and Gradius III. Lots of good improvement patches on Genesis too. Color improvement patch for TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, voice improvement patch for SF2:SCE, Sonic 3 Complete, Contra: Hard Corps Life Bar hack.
Thanks for posting this video. I have been wanting my wife to play Secret of Evermore with me, and the two player patch was something I always wanted. Its great!
This is a pretty cool video. I'd heard of a couple of the re-translation patches and that's about it, so nice to find some other applications of romhacks that improve games.
Did you hear about the bsnes Mode 7 4k modification? You really should check it out if you have a 4k display (You can even upscale to 1080 if you don't). Take games like Mario Kart, Secret of Mana (Overworld), etc. I haven't tried it with all games but it's REALLY cool if your PC can run it. Terranigma is one I definitely want to try.
When i was watching the Gradius slow down fix, i was like... holy shit they must have a no slow down StarFox patch. ..and then the ending.... I really enjoyed this video. Surely will look into it.
Is it bad that I love the BoF2 original translation? It just feels so genuine, even if it's clunky and weird as hell. It's like they're putting forward raw emotion without the need of more than the most basic of words. Probably nostalgia goggles speaking, but man I love it.
Great video! Would have helped to see a side by side comparison of the original and then with the hack so we could see the differences. I didnt even know these hacks existed. Unbelievable!
Another great video. Excellent way to know about improvements on snes games. No doubt I will play this version Secret of Mana with the scrolling fix. Thanks!
The Gradius III patch is unreal for sure. Haha, it's probably impossible but I would kill for a patch that would allow for a proper port Final Fight with Guy as a third optional character and two player simultaneous play. I know there is dozens of ways now to play arcade perfect FF but an SNES remake would sort of heal a sore spot on the SNES' legacy. This was an awesome video, thanks dude!!
Kevin Nunes *There's an unfinished patch for FFG that adds Cody and 2 player co-op. The team is busy doing a 3 player arcade version of FF called 30th Anniversary.*
You know. I found these videos today.. And honestly. Im impressed. I never really knew this was a thing. I knew you could patch games with the translations of a game. Since you cant always find the translated rom online.. well. Back when i was big on these games. .. Probably should. I still need to perfect my rom collection. But this... This is something that actualy is making me interested again in these games. Because if this can be done for some of them. Like Star Fox. That game especialy. Slow down was a big flaw of that game. As if doesnt feel.. Good to play a game that is less than 30 fps. 60 fps, sure, but for older games. 30 is the minimum atm for me. So will have to look things up. Thanks for this.
"bsnes" emulator is a real improvement for SNES games. It let you overclock the CPU so all the games run smoother, but without causing the ingame's animation to speed up unintentionally. It have feature to enhance MODE 7 and display the graphic in HD too. F-Zero and Mario Kart looks amazing in it. This emulator make me want to go back and play a bunch of games because of the improved experience. It still have some bugs at the moment though.
Great video! Your last point, the Starfox over lock, can be achieved on the SNES mini by editing a command line in hakchi for the same result as your video :D
Jeez, all I ever wanted was a version of SGnG without slowdown. I've heard "Capcom Generation: Dai 2 Shuu Makai to Kishi" has a version without slowdown, but that's on the Playstation. It's nice to get a patch for the original!
There is also a cool Hardmode rom for Seiken Densetsu3, it makes enemys tougher but also makes the agi and luck stat work. In addition the equipment is more important and gives bonuses. I must say the tough mod destroys your party when unprepared, levelling is more important tough.
I watched a streamer play BoF2 with the re-translation patch you featured and it was pretty nice. BoF2 was my first rpg so my rose tinted goggles tell me its not as nice but I know that isn't true. The charm of the original will always be wonderful for me but now I gotta play it with the patch.
one the old SNES emulators (snes 9x i think) played star fox at an overclocked speed (i didn't know how to fix it). this was on an old computer, so it definitely doesn't require a lot of processing speed.
The secret of evermore one was pretty interesting because it wasn't ever intended to be multiplayer so its quite asymmetric The dog tends to be quite physically durable but can't cast magic but also the players need to coordinate their sniffing to find reagents The dog can also leave the screen entirely which opens up some interesting gameplay possibilities
One that I've been playing a lot is a patch for Rockman & Forte that lets you switch characters whenever you want and lets you equip more than one special item at a time.
Working on a "best modern spiritual successors" video but so far most of the choices seem really obvious (Blazing Chrome, Horizon Chase Turbo, Cave Story, Bloodstained, etc). Lots of "Well no shit, Sherlock" choices, hopefully I'll find some lesser known stuff to add
@@SNESdrunk Super Fighter! This was a MS-DOS game that was probably 'inspired' by SF2, but it had some uniqueness and awesome character designs. Some dedicated programmer created the 'Super Fighter Team', obtained the legal rights to the title, and re-created the game as a modern high-quality fighting game. It took many years and I followed the development.
That Star Fox trick works on the ZSNES emulator too, without having to tweak any settings. It's always ran at max speed for me on my laptop...and it's awesome too, the game is so much more fun and playable.
A lot of the slowdowns that plagued SNES games can be alleviated by overclocking the CPU in the settings on emulators. The snes9x core on Retroarch also has a Reduce Slowdown setting in options. Granted this probably won't be as stable as a custom made patch but it does work in a pinch.
Something hilarious I wanted to bring up, is that when Super Ghouls and Ghosts got ported to the PS2 in a Capcom Collection, they patched out all the slow down. Same with the MegaMan X collection.
the Gradius 3 (SA-1 fix), and Super Ghouls n Ghosts restoration are amazing, because the people who did it made sure they could run on a real snes. so they are legitimately fixed authentic snes games now(basically they got a DLC patch). it's so awesome they're off the slowdown plagued list now! anything the snes can't really run i'm not interested in
I'm not sure about SNES but I've been playing some arcade games (Death Smiles and Shock Trooper) and the slow down is definitely not random. It only happens when there is too much enemies and bullets on screen, i.e. when you wish you have a slow-mo ability to dodge all crap coming at you
I completely forgot that Secret of Evermore wasn’t 2 player. I could swear my brother and I played it together, but I guess I only watched him back then. I played through it again last year and must say it’s a fun story and I wish they would make a (better) sequel.
Cybernator WOW! To think that I only ever heard of this game from a remix competition I participated in... Its odd to see it being represented still today
Who would want to play an even harder version of Gradius III. Me I guess. Can’t wait to get home and try it. And what would be the best way to play Seiken 2?? Is the switch version worth it??
One improvement hack I want for all of the retro games in existence is a simple infinite life hack. All modern games let's you start the game over at the beginning of the level/savepoint if you die. On old school retro games on the other hand you might end up having to start the game from scratch when you get a game over screen.
Pretty much every emulator has game genie/action replay functionality in it, so just find a game genie infinite lives code on Google and plug it into the emulator and there you go, no rom hack necessary
I guess that's true. And if not, most emulator and flashcards have a savestate ability. However, I personally would much rather have already patched ROMs to use on my everdrives and emulators without ever having to bother game genie codes again.
Great video! Can't wait for Improvement Patches 2. It isn't much but I'm pretty sure there's a patch for Lufia II US that restores broken graphics and maybe adds back in the crosses that were in the Japanese version? Also gotta mention the Castlevania 4 patch that restores crosses and blood.

ive played and beaten BoF 2 so many times. one day I will bust in that patch and replay it. excellent showing us these much needed things. Keep em coming if u run outta video ideas cuz this was fun to watch.
You wouldn't happen to know where I could find this, could you?
Massive thank-you for this, couldn't find it on romhacking or google
So much good! Thanks for putting this one together :)
What a badass video drunk! Your stuff just keeps getting better!
Thank you for linking these patches in the description, its annoying how many people don't actually do that.
It's annoying how people are too inept to do a simple search on Google to find these patches.
Great video. I knew about a couple of these, but not the others. Hope to see more improvement videos. Sifting through Romhacking can be a choir.
Just find a good source for Roms and you don’t have to worry about adding or removing headers. Just get the type you need.
I helped with the BoF2 translation grammar. It's exciting to see it featured so thank you for bringing attention to it!
wow, that Gradius III hack is amazing! and very much needed
it is amazing, i've been having a blast with it. a lot of just using gmae genie and getting as much on screen and seeing no slowdown, ever, not a once. so impressive now. hope to see many more legit slowdown fixes for other games. sparkster, castlevania 4, r-type, etc
The Gradius III footage made me speechless! I want the SA-1 chip applied to ALL the SNES games!!!
When i was watching the Gradius slow down fix, i was like... holy shit they must have a no slow down StarFox patch. ..and then the ending....
I really enjoyed this video. Surely will look into it.
Love this video. I'd also love to see more of these types and not just retranslations.
Thanks for another great video!
Both US and Japanese are NTSC - so when you say removed for the NTSC version that’s a little confusing.
They aren’t
It isn’t confusing
Yes they are - NTSC was used in both Japan and North America. They are NTSC-J and NTSC-U.

Hey brother thanks for all the videos, past, present, and future. I love your morning uploads it helps give a great start to the day.
Man !!, Thanks for These Vidz ^_^
I'm currently using UniPatcher on Android, Works Well :)
Just came back to say, I love these series. Please make more
This is a fantastic video. Thanks I'm currently patching all these roms now and can't wait to play them again!
Is it bad that I love the BoF2 original translation? It just feels so genuine, even if it's clunky and weird as hell. It's like they're putting forward raw emotion without the need of more than the most basic of words.
Probably nostalgia goggles speaking, but man I love it.
Nope. Not weird at all... it's one of my personal favorites even though it gets silly grindy in places, the storyline is among the best.
@@trave5779 Yeah. It's really meandering in the middle, but the start and ending are so dang strong.
Thanks!
The Cybernator improvement is awesome.
In the US version, all "anime" vignettes/portraits were completely disposed of...
I didn't even realize they were supposed to be there, it was pretty confusing and I ended up largely not paying attention to the text when I played.
For the SNES? WOW that's amazing!!! :O
one of your best videos imo. Also I didnt touch much of 16 bit rpgs and oh god they look awesome
Ni siquiera sabia sobre la existencia de estos parches, muchas gracias bro
You should make a playlist of this series of videos! I saw part 5 recently, but here is the first one, many years ago
I've always loved the terrific ALTTP DX / ALTTP reDuX set of improvement patches myself
Terranigma 60hz patch.
Secret of Mana Turbo worth a look.
Tried out HD Mode7 yet?
How is the 60hz patch?
@@acmnin2146 Great!
7:37 wow starfox actually looks playable with this
Saved the best track for the end. Good man.
This really makes me want to get a flash cart. Those shmups and starfox running at breakneck speeds looks amazing
It's nice to get a patch for the original!
this is my favourite list so far, i hope you make a part 2
There is also a cool Hardmode rom for Seiken Densetsu3, it makes enemys tougher but also makes the agi and luck stat work. In addition the equipment is more important and gives bonuses. I must say the tough mod destroys your party when unprepared, levelling is more important tough.
You really improved my performance.
I watched a streamer play BoF2 with the re-translation patch you featured and it was pretty nice. BoF2 was my first rpg so my rose tinted goggles tell me its not as nice but I know that isn't true. The charm of the original will always be wonderful for me but now I gotta play it with the patch.
That star fox mod... makes that game look beautiful. Honestly blew my mind
Another great video! I would love an entire video based on good relocalization patches.
More romhacking stuff videos please. I liked this!
one the old SNES emulators (snes 9x i think) played star fox at an overclocked speed (i didn't know how to fix it). this was on an old computer, so it definitely doesn't require a lot of processing speed.
I’m glad you brought up the BoF2 hack translation. It’s so good. I’m still not a big fan of BoF2 but it definitely is a great fix.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the brand new introduction movie added to BOF2 retranslation.
RIGHT?! It may be cheesy but it’s cool and epic and don’t forget that same announcer from MvC that says *_“Capcom Presents”_*
The secret of evermore one was pretty interesting because it wasn't ever intended to be multiplayer so its quite asymmetric
The dog tends to be quite physically durable but can't cast magic but also the players need to coordinate their sniffing to find reagents
The dog can also leave the screen entirely which opens up some interesting gameplay possibilities
Hey 2 year old post of mine. I was about to post basically the same thing again good thing I thought to check
One that I've been playing a lot is a patch for Rockman & Forte that lets you switch characters whenever you want and lets you equip more than one special item at a time.
What about a video about new games that tried to recreate nes/snes/genesis/tg16 magic?

@@SNESdrunk Gunlord X might fit in that video.
Great video, as always. Of course, now I want to see overclocked Doom SNES.
I hope you have a great rest of your day, too
That Star Fox trick works on the ZSNES emulator too, without having to tweak any settings.
Granted this probably won't be as stable as a custom made patch but it does work in a pinch.
gameshows and board games already. Worth picking up from time to time for the nostalgia alone
Oh man, it's like you know exactly what I want to see.
Something hilarious I wanted to bring up, is that when Super Ghouls and Ghosts got ported to the PS2 in a Capcom Collection, they patched out all the slow down.
Same with the MegaMan X collection.
the Gradius 3 (SA-1 fix), and Super Ghouls n Ghosts restoration are amazing, because the people who did it made sure they could run on a real snes. so they are legitimately fixed authentic snes games now(basically they got a DLC patch). it's so awesome they're off the slowdown plagued list now! anything the snes can't really run i'm not interested in
"they got a DLC patch" That's a good way of putting it
The great battle series all 5 games have been English translated so you can cover those on part 2
Amazing!
Those ups patches really deliver.
Cybernator WOW! To think that I only ever heard of this game from a remix competition I participated in... Its odd to see it being represented still today
I would also like to add that you can actually add multiple patches to a single game as long as they don't interfere with each other.
Always quality work ty

Who would want to play an even harder version of Gradius III.
Me I guess. Can’t wait to get home and try it.
And what would be the best way to play Seiken 2?? Is the switch version worth it??
The switch version is great, but I'd say a rom with the relocalisation patch is just the perfect way to play 2.
