The Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck (affectionately known as the "Clunk") was a Canadian jet interceptor/fighter serving during the Cold War both in NATO bases in Europe and as part of NORAD. The CF-100 was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production, serving primarily with the RCAF/CAF and in small numbers in Belgium. For its day, the CF-100 featured a short takeoff run and high climb rate, making it well suited to its role as an interceptor. There is one on permanent display at the Edmonton Alberta Aviation Museum. The engines are almost as big as the fuselage!

Always surprised they didn’t make a swept wing version...but I believe it was built more for range and versatility than speed, which for the expanses of Canada, makes sense.
UPDATE: I just discovered they did make a swept wing prototype of the CF-100, called the CF-103.

I remember in the late 60's, in Lethbridge Alberta, piles of these CF100's were crushed, and melted down and destroyed at the airport.

Great plane but surprised at the straight wings. Although the US was using the F89 at the time. Sorry about the arrow

A cf-100 was redesign was made into a wood mock-up known as the cf-103 with swept wings an more powerful engines in mind. Avro dropped the project infavour of the more advanced cf-105.

actually the 103 was dropped because the 100 airframe was mach capable without a new wing, just needed more powerful engines.

They DID develop a swept wing version, the CF-103, but by then, the Arrow was already needed (or so the gov't at the time thought) and they cancelled it for the Arrow.

You mean like the Scorpion, Banshee, Panther, and Thunderjet? A lot of pre-Korean war designs were straight wings. The CF100 was designed in 1946.

The CF 100 was a dud.

1953 was the first operational year for the CF 100 and 414 Squadron at CFB North Bay Ontario flew them in a training role until 1981. How do you get 40 years from that? By 1961 the CF 101 was replacing the dud in the operational role for intercepters.

It was used as an electronic warfare simulator for a bunch of years after that. It performed its role very well and was loved by its crew. My Dad flew them out of North Bay with 419 and after at the OTU in Cold Lake. They took a kid off the farm and made a man out of him. Just saying it was a dud without any reasoning or context is pretty stupid.
