I’m severely visually impaired and I have bought a stream deck so control my screen reader software which uses a vast number of unusual shortcut keys. I have just enough vision to be able to tell if a button has a light or dark background which means I can set up a pattern on the profile to let me know where the buttons are, even if I can’t identify icons on the buttons knowing the position they are means I can still use the steam deck. Very impressed and really helpful.
I use my Stream Deck to help me broadcast sports. Adding points to a scoreboard, taking graphics in and out, rolling breaks, etc. The Stream Deck seriously has streamlined everything. It has been one of the best purchases I have ever made.
Totally agree with the time saved using Stream Deck for everyday functions. I have set up multiple hotkey buttons for a number of procedures in Excel 365 - some with 30 or 40 instructions. I put my 15 button Stream Deck in my laptop bag if I’m working away from home. Automatic switching to a relevant profile when opening an application is brilliant.
I am not using stream deck to replace single keyboard shortcuts. I'm running multiple shortcuts in sequences. Here is an example for a worksheet with over 50 columns and nearly 10K rows. Turn on filtering. Go to top of date column & filter by year. Go to top of category column & filter by a category. Go to end of debit column & create a subtotal formula for visible rows only. That's 4 stream deck buttons to automate 55 keystrokes!
Stream deck is really nice! Remember that you can control the actions from a phone app as well (30 days free). A good idea if you first just want to try things out. Only downside is that many 3rd party tools run as individual application on the background (at least this is the case on Windows). Having a ton of actions from various providers can start to show up as CPU and RAM usage. This is not a problem with the built in stuff or with any simple actions that only rely on the html/js based functionality as that runs inside Stream deck app.
As an illustrator and graphic designer, I bought both the small and xl for my workflow. The small is perfect to place above my Wacom Cintiq. The only chore is designing and creating my own icons as I cannot find art/design specific ones. Great video.
Thanks for sharing. Nice idea. I recommend looking at Iconfinder.com - great free icons that you might find some useful elements from to rework into your own icons.
I have used a gaming mouse for the same purpose. The hard part was remembering which button did certain actions. This looks better since you can establish an icon.
Yes totally - lots of people have mentioned using keyboard shortcuts or the Touch Bar: but this visual custom button set up is more significant than you can first think. 👍
that's the primary reason I got the stream deck, cause I had tried setting up a midi controller to do it, but found myself always forgetting which buttons were what. the stream deck gives you that visual reminder, in a form that will fit on even the smallest of PC desks.
I'm forwarding this video to everyone! I use one for my video conferencing calls (Meet and Zoom). Its game changing to a) have dedicated buttons for muting yourself regardless of keyboard shortcut combo and b) to have that button be in the same place for both apps. I don't have to look away to control my settings or stumble around trying to unmute myself because the tab isn't in focus ;)
Yeah, it's basically a custom keyboard for macros and automatic shortcut execution. I have one to help with video and audio editing tasks, but also looking at other automations too.
I think this is essentially what Apple had intended for their quick menu bar on previous MacBooks, but lacked the form factor of having the Deck as an accessory to the side of your workflow.
I've been using two of the XL stream decks as part of my work computer for the past 9 months or so. I'm a Software Engineer and this is incredible useful for setting up easy access to the ginormous amount of hotkeys and commands available in Microsoft Visual Studio. There is even an official plugin available. A real time-saver.
Hey - also a software engineer thinking about buying one.... What kind of things do you set yours up to do? I'm trying to get ideas for how to speed up development
I dont stream or game but this tool has been infinitely useful for me. Just for every day tasks on my PC. If something takes at least 3 or more clicks to achieve, then I make a button out of it. My favorite add on is the window mover, which resizes windows and moves them to any one of my 4 monitors. It also allows me to switch between virtual desktops which effectively gives me 8 monitors to work with. I love it so much.
It is serious cool pal. I’m working on a Notion use-case specific video for the new year that I think you’ll enjoy too. 🙌🎉 thanks for watching. Keep up your great content too :)
I also use a Stream Deck. You can do a lot of this using the program Alfred with less pain. I use my Stream Deck for macros and that's about it. Opening websites with it is neat but Alfred is faster, especially if you have to navigate through a page or two to press the button.
@@BetterCreating This was my thought as well - as an avid user of Alfred, I could see it and the Stream Deck working in harmony with one another really well.
Thank you for this great explanation of how you use a stream deck for productivity. I am a time management coach who makes extensive use of text expanders and other productivity tools and this looks like a worthy addition to my productivity tools setup!
I’ve had this in my Amazon list for two years. I love the idea and had similar thinking to you. The thing that gets me is I have to remove my hand from the keyboard to use it. That doesn’t take much time, but it does take some time. I’m on the fence.
I'm really interested to see how I can use this to streamline my productivity for the administration side of teaching. Particularly when it comes to communication and reporting.
I am looking forward to implementing Notion and other ideas with the stream deck after preparing the Mac Mini properly. I am into so so many interests which involve many many different topics and finding it hard to stay organized with all the interests. It would be very helpful to be able to have all my tools related to one interest say photography or video editing all accessible easily and open together or open a particular project when the spirit moves me and not have to be like starting over to continue. I am very organized thinker but did not do good job with Apple devices as I got so distracted with all the possibilities. Now I want to focus and organize things. You have been inspiring with your ideas. Charlie
Nice one Matthew - thanks for watching. Yeah: loving it for editing and one button work context setups particularly. Love your content by the way - I think we have a lot in common! 🕶👊

Exactly - perfect use cases - multi action buttons for quick context based setup and apps that have a ton of shortcuts you can’t remember!! Yes indeed - they have a simple icon editor on on the website via the drop down when you add the icon, or just make or download your own in any design app and then add. That’s how I made my Notion Icon Pack for it. Cheers.
I used to have a pi-engineering macro keyboard, I used it to make one-key keyboard combos to run our work software, since it had such lovely combos like CTRL-SHIFT-S-F5 and such to do different things.
@@BetterCreating I was previously unaware of these though, as the little LED screen is nice. On the Pi-engineering ones, you have to cut out little paper key cap labels, which does the job, but it's not as clean and elegant.
Downloaded your Notion icon for stream deck - fab thanks. Made one improvement by add /turn to each button action (from /h1 to /turnh1) this mean it will format current block as well as crest new. Thanks for your great content.
You're reading my mind with your videos. I was looking into this, and this was a great overview of its uses outside of gaming. I think I'm gonna go for it now. Another great video from you. Merry Christmas!
I bought a gaming mouse a while back to help with productivity and quickly realized there's not enough buttons. It has 7 extra buttons and a scroll wheel that acts as the middle button, in addition to left and right. Some had even more buttons but I did not like their ergonomics. Then I came across this thing and had the same idea. Basically to have the most common hotkeys on the mouse (it also detects what application you're using), then have pages of tasks and visual feedback on the stream deck. I hope it works as well as I imagine.
Next time I have extra money lying around I am certainly going to get this v2 one. It looks snappy and works with macOS .. perfect. There's so many apps I use daily where my fingers just smash the keyboard combos to do 3 things over and over again. And mispressing the shortcut can ruin stuff. I'd love to have an external setup like this where i know it will go well and I can keep focus on the screen. I've tried using the iPad itself, but no tactile feedback whatsoever is counterproductive actually. I kept going back to the real keyboard. Even bought a numeric keyboard recently just to have the shortcuts assigned there. Which helped.
Interesting perspective. Yeah I agree - it’s not for everyone - some people just say it’s pointless and slower than keyboard shortcuts - but I find the visual and tactile nature of it has been great for shortcut heavy apps - and I definitely use more of them now. Ps. Get the Cheatsheet app for quickly pulling up a list of every shortcut for your applications. Thanks for watching
Hi there, Let’s say I just discovered your channel. Entered the Apple buying my 2011 Iphone and then an IPad and then 2018 Intel MacMini ….the updated one. Pre…M1 chip. Successfully upgraded memory to 32GB. Added two SSD External Drives. HD filled up and started booting from an SSD. Running very slow. Sorry for details but thought may be relevant for my question. I also have an IPad Pro. I just ordered Elgato Stream Deck Plus,….which I see many possibilities to use with my MacMini. My question and request for advice how I should proceed “starting over” with Mac mini before introducing the StrreamDeck. The HD as you know is not replaceable. Thank you for whatever ideas you may have. Charlie
Yeah I think I’m only just scratching the surface of what is possible with a bit of research. I’m hoping to have single button automations to set up for podcasting, specific zoom meetings and online courses perhaps. 👍
New to the unit. I like your presentation style, so I subscribed. This video was a bit of a teaser, so I will look at more. Ctl-Q? I never used shortcuts much. Will look into that one! Thanks.
Been toying with getting this for a while now, so came to your video! Thanks for the breakdown of it all and you've persuaded me :-D Love streamlining workflows so excited at seeing my productivity soar!
I'd never thought of a Stream Deck for non-streaming purposes. Interesting! I do have OBS setup for my webcam and mic to do some light pre-processing, which surprised some colleagues and friends.
I only needed a rotary volume control and the ability to program a couple of keyboard shortcuts to a button. Bought a Nobsound S6 that did the job. Less flash but way cheaper.
Thanks for a really interesting video. I might have to get one of these. It would be nice if the buttons could be programmed to change from red to green when you Mute/unmute yourself in Zoom or Teams calls. It looks like they can't actually do that which is a shame.
I’ve been using my Streamdeck for about 6 months now. Why oh why oh why did I never think of having a Cmd+Q button?! You’ve earned yourself a new subscriber 👍. Looking forward to exploring your channel.
@@BetterCreating now I've tried it I'm hitting a stumbling block. Mapping ⌘Q quits the app. And when I select ⌘ from the drop downlist - I can't select/add Q. How did you do it?
This video came up on my recommended. Great video, but i have a question. Have you considered Touch-Portal? You can use a spare phone or tablet, and so pretty much the exact same thing. Free version has 2 pages, 8 buttons per page. Paid version (about 12 bucks) can have 74 buttons per page, infinite sub folders. The community is very active, and there are a ton of plug-ins. And it's for windows and mac, and Android and iOS.
Great to have you here. Yes I have - it’s the obvious best alternative with infinite tinkering options - great for people who want to maybe keep things cheaper and/or really build their own automations. But honestly: Stream Deck Mobile is a pile of awful - mostly because it’s laggy - but really because it looses the tactile quality of real buttons - I don’t think you can beat that: having real buttons to press in one place is som much better and intuitive. I’m still in the stream deck camp.
Hello! I recently bought a stream deck and I rather like your command Q button. Could you go more into detail on how to configure that? The stream deck software just closes instead of assigning the hotkey to command Q.
Yeah it's good isn't it? Yes I can! When stream deck is observing keystrokes you need to type in the command button on it's own, release it and after a moment then type the 'Q''. This will allow you to add it without quiting the stream deck app. Since it's a generic quit button i've copied one to all my Stream Deck profiles in the same button location so i can easily quit whatever program i'm in. Thanks for watching!
Get the 32 key version. I couldn't imagine all the paging on a 15 key given all the paging I do on my 32. I have 28 right now on my safari profile. And that' only half of what I need. It all adds up, really quickly. Zoom in, out, default. Next Tab, Previous Tab, Close Tab, Tab overview. Reopen last closed tab. That's 8 right there! Reading list, bookmarks sidebar, add bookmark. Search. Find. Print. Then you have cut, copy, paste. What 2 do you get rid of on the 15 key?
The secret of its success is the software to assign program starters, functions, macros, workflows etc. prepared and in a dynamic, intuitive way. There have been macro buttons for decades, apart from the F-keys, Logitech gaming keyboards incl. small display, mice with more than 3 buttons, DJ/MIDI controllers and most notable, the multimedia buttons for controlling media player. Thing is, that different desktop system have different APIs and ways to inject non-HID events, and assign them more complex functions on the othet side, especially when it comes to controlling programs beyond their hotkeys. Then we (don't) have the optimus keyboard, with one programmable OLED per button, at a sick price tag. So, streamdeck brought all these together into a compromise and leaving out the shortcomings of former approaches in the driver software.
Sure: I recommend a good place to start is the IFTTT plugin and and account with the website (ifttt.com/) and some smart sockets you can buy to plug things into, and them into the wall. This will allow a basic light control with Stream Deck (plus you don't give away all your privacy to Alexa and Google if you don't want to! cheers and thanks for watching!
Its pretty much assigned hot keys with a little more function with wireless connections to more devices, with fancy buttons for each one. I always knew they had more potential, just never really used one personally. Great Video might consider something like this down the line, I am still learning my system, and my main projects. I like the idea of it. Glad to see that it has potential for more than just streaming.
i know this is an old video but i am a new streamer and a twitch streamer i have watched for two years sold me his for 80 since he upgraded i am very excited
Great video, thanks! Did you consider the Louvedeck Live at all? I love the idea of the Stream Deck but would like some dials to use with Adobe programs.
Some of those shortcuts are legit, but a lot of seems to be literally faster with keyboard shortcuts. Like the shut-down-applications shortcut. Is it reeeeally faster to move your hand to the Streamdeck, than just pressing a quick button combination where your hands already are? The multi-action shortcuts are legit, though.
Yep - very true that you don’t need to do the simpler shortcuts. I personally use them for a music control board or Final Cut Pro quick edit board so this is where it is much faster. Wanted to show options for all people’s interests. But sure - agree that the multi-action set ups are where it’s at … then again - just get Alfred and you are sorted. Options options! Cheers.
Hey Simon, how easy is it to switch from Windows to Mac? I switch between both operating systems all the time. At work I use Windows but when I'm home I use my MacBook? Thanks for the video again.
Interesting - not sure on that - presumably if you have stream deck loaded separately on pc and mac it will just feed that profile to the deck and just work…

So cool hearing all the non-streaming use cases!
New to the unit. I like your presentation style, so I subscribed. This video was a bit of a teaser, so I will look at more. Ctl-Q? I never used shortcuts much. Will look into that one! Thanks.
So glad I stumbled upon your video on this! So many uses!! Thank you! Liked and subbed!
Excellent! Welcome to the BC Community! Thanks for watching.
Been toying with getting this for a while now, so came to your video! Thanks for the breakdown of it all and you've persuaded me :-D Love streamlining workflows so excited at seeing my productivity soar!
Nice. Enjoy!
I'd never thought of a Stream Deck for non-streaming purposes. Interesting! I do have OBS setup for my webcam and mic to do some light pre-processing, which surprised some colleagues and friends.
Wow, this is insane. Like a new world. Thank you for the video :) I would be really interested in more productivity videos with stream deck.
Nice one. Yeah - it’s pretty great. Will plan another stream deck video !
Fine! I'll buy one...
A button to switch audio output seems really useful
Yes indeed - it’s a good one.
Using a background music with a loop that sounds exactly like a door bell or phone ringtone - is very clever!
But the video is great, thanks a lot! :D
Haha - thanks! Are you expecting anyone over today?! Thanks for watching Serge. :)
I plan to persuade my boss to buy at least a 15key streamdeck to push my workflow especially in Excel and Word. There are plugins available for both
Sounds good - hope it works out
Nice and helpful Review. I am going to buy one!
Great ideas for someone who has one and hasn't used it yet. 😅🤦
Thanks for the video!
Loving the stream deck joy! Thanks for watching.
I only needed a rotary volume control and the ability to program a couple of keyboard shortcuts to a button. Bought a Nobsound S6 that did the job. Less flash but way cheaper.
Hello, Congratulations. 👍Cool. Thank You For Advice and Explaining Us. I got it. Someday, I would buy it anytime.
Thanks - it’s a great tool. see you on another one. :)
Really awesome work here. I can tell you put in a lot of work bringing this idea to life. Thanks mate.
Thanks Ryan. It makes me happy anyway! :)
Thanks for a really interesting video. I might have to get one of these.
It would be nice if the buttons could be programmed to change from red to green when you Mute/unmute yourself in Zoom or Teams calls. It looks like they can't actually do that which is a shame.
Yes you can do this: you just need a toggle switch and two coloured icons.
@@BetterCreating Great!! Thanks!
Great concise job!
Glad it was helpful! Cheers :)
I am using an xl for editing davinci resolve. Didn't even think of using for notion other than just opening it up.
Yeah, I think it has real potential. :) - just getting started with using this for FCP for editing now too.
I’ve been using my Streamdeck for about 6 months now. Why oh why oh why did I never think of having a Cmd+Q button?! You’ve earned yourself a new subscriber 👍. Looking forward to exploring your channel.
Haha - yeah it’s a good one! Glad it was a find! Welcome to the channel - loads to see! :)
@@BetterCreating now I've tried it I'm hitting a stumbling block. Mapping ⌘Q quits the app. And when I select ⌘ from the drop downlist - I can't select/add Q. How did you do it?
Excellent content. You’ve got a world wide audience, I recommend you put the affiliate links in both US and UK formats. Cheers.
Thanks pal - it’s on the to do list this month! Thanks :)
you can just aswell bind simple shortcuts on your keyboard to certain programs/execute code snippets...
Yep. totally can 👍
Good stuff. Worth the subscription.
Thanks for the sub! Welcome to the BC Community!
You convinced me to buy it.
Perfect video I own a stream deck too and this gets me more inspiration to get more use out of it thx :D
Thanks Jan. Great to hear! His was just 4 days of messing around so I’m sure there is a lot more to discover! :)
Cool. Also useful, Google home and Chrome bookmarks.
nice one.
Can you make a full tutorial on how to set up your stream deck like this
Will work on it! Nice idea. :)
I find concept interesting. How is this better than shortcut keys or macros?
... would have been nice to know if you can use it through a dock to keep a 1 cable set up
Mine is working through my external monitor as a dock - so seems all good! :)
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Simon! Now I have my Xmas 🎁!
It's sooooo good pal! Happy Holidays!
Ugh, I saw the play stop buttons.... Darn it... I need this now.
haha sorry!
Great thoughts. :) thanks for watching.
Ok, it was on my wishlist, but now I’m putting it higher in the list. It’s not yet in my basket… but it’s getting closer XD
Haha - you are welcome! I Think. I’m pleased I did it!
Awesome, I have one but never realised it could do so much, thanks for the inspiration 👍🏻
No problem 👍
Wondering if you knew…can you do all these on the Stream Deck Plus?
I’m sure you can.
Thank you!
Add an affiliate link to the description with the product, it’s going viral!
They are already there! :)
Great video. Thank you
Welcome!
Can you please elaborate on how you got the light to work with the Stream Deck (around 5:39 timestamp in the video)? Thank you!
@@BetterCreating Amazing! Thank you!!!
Thanks - yes I find I use it a lot more than expected. It’s good.
@@BetterCreating Hopefully it'll get supported by Linux sooner than later.
Great Job on this Video!! ;-)
Thanks!
Awesome stuff. But it could simply be an app on your phone or tablet, right? Is there anything like that out there?
Yeah - there is an app mobile version - has to be on same network as your computer. Or check out the Alfred app for Mac.
Can you do something as simple as shortcuts for bold, italics, underline, cut and paste etc
Of course - any shortcut from any app - just type it in to the observation input for a button.
@@BetterCreating Interesting. And that would work across apps, as they're universal shortcuts usually, I would think.
Have you used Better Touch Tools? You can do some similar things but with the mac Touch Bar 💻
No i haven’t - sound good
i know this is an old video but i am a new streamer and a twitch streamer i have watched for two years sold me his for 80 since he upgraded i am very excited
Haha love it! Enjoy!
Great video, thanks! Did you consider the Louvedeck Live at all? I love the idea of the Stream Deck but would like some dials to use with Adobe programs.
Yeah I love the look of loupedeck. I think it can be super good for video editing particularly.
Muchas Gracias!!
Welcome! :)
Productivity/convenience through the roof, but are there any security trade-offs?
Not sure why there would be - it’s basically a glorified keyboard you can program. :)
I didn't know I wanted this
Some of those shortcuts are legit, but a lot of seems to be literally faster with keyboard shortcuts.
Interesting - not sure on that - presumably if you have stream deck loaded separately on pc and mac it will just feed that profile to the deck and just work…
I’d be interested in such, as an App for my…
iPhone or iPad.
If you mean stream deck - look up stream deck mobile.
Thanks, Simon. 👍🏼👍🏼
WoW 🤩 awesome
Great video thanks
Thanks for watching! Welcome to the channel :)
Nice video, thank you!
How can I switch the audio output with the Stream Deck?
You can try the Toggle Audio Device plugin from the stream deck store as a starter. It's good to switch between speaker and headphones.
