  • This is one of my top 5 questions I get either by e mail or comment. There is a lot of videos out there showing you how to do this and most of them have never picked up a wrench or even tried to install a unit.
We have been doing this exact procedure for over 15 years and it has been a proven success for us. The only thing we have changed is the descaling a Navien unit.
If you follow this video, you will have complete success on maintaining your tankless heater.
There are many different flush kits on the market and there all good, I have been using Flow Aid for many years and it has worked very well for us. You can use distilled white vinegar as long as you use a pump rated for tankless heaters not something you buy from Harbor Freight.

Of all my research, I have yet to find an official descaler kit that has a proper pump in it. They all have GPH ratings that are WAY to high. So I did go to Harbor Freight and found a 264 GPH (4.4 GPM) pond pump. I realize that flushing at 20,25,30 GPM is too fast for the solution to "work", but if you run it for a longer time is it ok to do? Or, will running at high GPM actually cause damage to the tankless?

Thanks for the video. I have seven Rinnai's in a parallel setup. It's time consuming to flush all seven of them. I was thinking of building a custom hose so I could flush all of them at once. But I need to figure out how to check for the flow coming out of each one. Sometimes the water inlet valve doesn't open (I have a master unit which keeps the valves off by default, I think). Do you have any suggestions on how to do all seven efficiently and fast?

I would do 1 thing differently. I would clean the filters AFTER descaling. Dirt in your bucket and/or deposits dislodged during descaling could clog the filter

Do you have a video of going from natural gas to propane on a RL series? RL94e is what I have to be exact.

How often should you do this if you have always had a water softener?
