3:35 Japanese game developers trying to make the english version the "main source of truth" is always a bit iffy imo. For example look at kingdom hearts. Allegedly Nomura said that the english version is the canon version (gets claimed in fan circles a lot but can't actually find a primary source for this), but it has so many translation errors, voice acting quirks and other problems that the japanese version just doesn't have. And the obvious reason for that is nomura doesn't speak English. Same as Yoshi-P. He doesn't speak English (at least not fluently) and neither do the writers for the game (though one of the lore oversight people. They don't actually know what the translation says with all of its details and nuances. They can have someone else try to translate it back to them, explain the nuances to them, give them the literal meaning of each idiom used etc. but that just adds more layers of errors that start piling up. Add to that the completely different mindset someone who speaks a language and someone who doesn't have when they hear that language and making an "X language first" game as someone who only speaks Y language is just impossible. So games made by a mostly japanese speaking team claiming to be "english first" will never actually be english first no matter how much they claim they are. And with ff16 while Koji is great, He does sometimes just mess up with his translations. And he wasn't the only translator on the game
Seriously, guy like Nomura working in the game industry with products marketed for international audience, and he can't even be bothered to pick up the international language? Who gets by in today's day and age without at least some basic English literacy for crying out loud, especially when you consider Japan has mandatory English class in their education system.
Yes VI will forever be the best one. Sure some dungeons are boring and the encounter rate too high and it's annoying with the esper level up bonuses. And well the mode 7 effects are horrible. But pretty much everything else is just as fantastic as it was 30 years ago. It has really aged well.
I'm just so happy that Theatrhythm and Tactics scored that high... Tactics is my all-time favourite, but I really loved playing Theatrhythm on the 3DS...
The average person is just stupid. The morons could use auto junction and change what they didn't like (status or elemental attacks). Its not the games fault the players are inherently stupid.
Yeah people just could not comprehend one button mechanics. Really goes to show the true IQ of the average FF fan. Also with Triple Triad so fun and being able to get all magic via cards... whelp you cant fix stupid.
@@heiral7773 This is the problem with FF8 stans. We understand the junction system and how to break it. Its still stupid imo. A difference of opinion doesn't make someone dumb. Dismissing opinions you don't like as low IQ is though.
Not on my list. FF16 is near the end with FF13. It goes to show many of these FF16 lovers are more than likely filthy casuals. That game is pretending to be an RPG with heavy action oriented combat with repetitive hack n slash shonen anime wanna-be bs without any real strategies while FF12 was inspired by FF11 which is a great game in itself which sadly many will never play unless it has a true offline one player mode. FF12 takes what FF11 did but it's a one player game which is why you get many of the same mechanics from FF11 in FF12 including boss fights. Some good some not so good especially when dealing with time.
Funny things from FF 14 is during development, Koji Fox idea of Nald'thal used for the graphic test run for Sony Playstation 3, due to the time constraint and fear of failing the pitch, the team using the quote "Thal's Balls" for every single NPC during the pitch.
Honestly, FVIII is still my favorite. It's not only the first one I played, but I was also blown away by the fmv quality and the summons. It was only later that I could understand the story and come to love that as well. Never had an issue with the junction system zi just thought it was really cool
Isn't that an issue that it took multiple playthroughs to understand the story? Tbf thats 7's biggest problem too and I loved that game so I get it. I do wonder what percent of FF fan's favorite in the series is the first they played.
@ggregg2667 no, I was just young and didn't care to pay attention to the story when I wanted to be fighting trexsaurs. It was only when I was older than I care for the story of any game, because I mostly just wanted to enjoy the gameplay. It wasn't an issue of not understanding it, just a matter of me not caring at the time

7 may have been famous, but it's also a glitchy mess. All those well know glitches like W-item duplication, overflow, etc, they were never meant to happen in the first place, Square clearly rushed it's development and didn't do enough testing. 6 was definitely ahead of it's time, such a diverse cast, each with a memorable story.
Ridiculous! Final fantasy music is incredible yes. But a musical rhythm game shouldn't be considered for this list at all. Not to mention the absolutely atrocious art style.
@@louiechudley5616 I agree that a game celebrating a series should kind of take the backseat when talking about the series it's celebrating in the first place, but this list is honestly all over the place and is just "best ranked games-with-a-final fantasy-on-the-title on a localised poll". I already know about My Most Favorite Epic Final Fantasy Video Game franchises throughout the years I Absolutely had a Blast playing. 1. Final Fantasy I 2. Final Fantasy II 3. Final Fantasy III 4. Final Fantasy IV 5. Final Fantasy V 6. Final Fantasy VI 7. Final Fantasy VII franchises throughout the years 8. Final Fantasy VIII 9. Final Fantasy IX 10. Final Fantasy X 11. Final Fantasy XI 12. Final Fantasy XII 13. Final Fantasy XIII franchise 14. Final Fantasy XIV franchises throughout the years 15. Final Fantasy XV franchises throughout the years 16. Final Fantasy XVI
Little bummed not to see IV and V in the top 5 but still an interesting list. Also not surprised that the two FF’s considered to be the best in VI and VII have a similar negative issue of overrated or overhyped.
@ which is why there will always be a collective of people calling then over rated or overhyped. Very few games live up to the hype. Personally VI is roughly in the middle of my rankings.
I adore 6, it was my favorite for a long time and was the game I grew up on.... but I can also say that by modern standards it doesn't live up to the hype. Still a really good game, but the limitations of space on the cartridges held back the depth the team was able to go into for that game and its story. 7 has a similar reaction but for a different reason. 7, like 6, is still a good game. But 7 is part of a larger eco system of games that all came out around the same time and were among the first gaming experiences of a new generation of millennial gamers (these are games like FF7, Symphony of the Night, and Ocarina of time). And as such, they're all painted with this rose colored nostalgia where many gamers remember them as being much better than they actually are. And they more remember how blown away they were by these games as children
So just based on other surveys I’ve seen I’m quite surprised FF8 did not make this list. Either way I think the top end is very accurate. You’ve got a clear S tier. FF9, the remakes, FF10, and then of course FF7.
I did not touched ff games until 7 came out in NA, being my first ff game i though it was a great game and it's still is a good game now for me but ff9 is my top favorite as I think the story and huge character background and even the changes they go though was all very well done, even the music on ff9 is so good.
kinda feel the same.... I was a teen when 7 came out and I liked it okay... but it definitely feels like it's part of a larger family of games that all came out as the bulk of the millennial generation was coming of age and is linked with a lot of nostalgia and love from that group. (Ocarina of Time is another game like this I point to as having that same effect) Not bad games by any stretch, but also incredibly over hyped and dare say overrated... and with the game taking up three spots, feels kind of repeated here
Even though it doesn't have the best graphics. I always thought 6 was the best just on the story alone. Wish they would remake it but either it would be like 3 games. Or they would have to chop it a lot.
FF8 and 10 are my two favorites, 6 being the first I played without realizing what it was and 8 being played before 7 when I got a PlayStation. However I cannot overstate how important 7 was as you said. It's a solid game in my book, just not my favorite Final Fantasy.
I don’t know of anything other artwork that is so inspired by the technological, musical, narrative, financial, game changer in one medium, being Star Wars and film making, that then goes on to become its equal in another medium. FF7 isnt just inspired by Star Wars, FF7 is to gaming what Star Wars was to film. There is before Star Wars and after it. Gaming is no different. Obviously there was Kubricks 2001, or Super Mario 64 in 96’ but nothing comes close to what came after.
I would honestly say Final Fantasy IV is the best and I feel like I don't need to explain why it is. Also, in my honest opinion, I think the PSP version of the game is the best version, mainly due to the sprites.
It's always interesting to see what communities of players think about these games. Even when I don't agree or don't understand! FF7 has been just so closely tied to my marriage that I can't ever NOT love it. And that's even considering that (as I've learned over time from THIS channel, haha) I didn't even explore all of it! Then FF14 - once I actually played, I was HOOKED. I already liked MMOs, had played Everquest a bit (and hated its sequel), had played WoW for ages and ages... Battle for Azeroth had broken my heart though and suddenly - THAT. Eorzea floored me immediately, and I happened to begin playing RIGHT at the time of the Rising Event. I was so new to the game that I did not know who Yoshida Nomura even WAS. Something like six years later (I started during the Shadowbringers era), I'm still roaming Eorzea and writing probably way too much fan fiction, haha! Every member of my family plays, and it's so big a part of my life that I just say "I'm logging on to the game." THE game: what others? 'Nuff said!
Agree with the criticism of 7.... which I'm sure will get me lots of friends on this comment section. I got the game when it came out when I was a teenager... and even then wasn't in love with it. It was a perfectly fine game, and I will still now say it's a good one. But no where near as amazing or spectacular as many others make it out to be. I do think it's very wildly overrated. I've played every mainline game with the exception of XI, and still find myself going back to X as the best in the series
Interesting list ... You cut out the middleman, yourselves, and edited an echo-chamber into existence in a video format It'll certainly make the comment section more interesting, and make it easy to spot who didn't even watch the video
surprised to see 16 on this list. i loved it but def left alot on the table. Coulda have been a 10/10 masterpiece with better pacing, removing some bloat, better side quest variety, more RPG elements/growth mechanics, and a better third act i love it and it still gets a 8.5 from me but man, it really coulda been in that upper echelon
Aside from entries 10 & 9, not surprised by the results. Lot of FF 7 x) Too bad my boys 8, 12 or TA didn't make it to that list :/ 8 is the one that need a remake the most !
honestly I think 6 needs it more... considering it's one of the oldest games in the series to never get any kind of proper update (and no the mobile version and pixel remasters don't count) Not to mention it really could use modern development being able to better and more deeply tell its story. Cartridge memory limitations kind of restricted it back in the day
I knew I was about to be assaulted by Final Fantasy VII at the top 😂. Any fan voted ranking is so predictable. I am surprised XVI made is so high though.
Not gonna lie. This list doesn't have a lot of surprises to me. Especially the last few entries. And to be fair to the ratings, do consider all the games are being compared to one another. The fact that some of them are lower that a 9.0 rating is probably more about comparing some of the games to the masterpieces of the franchise.
FFVII has one of, if not the best cast of characters in gaming. Every character is well-developed and has a great story. The materia system is still one of the best, most versatile systems in gaming without feeling completely overwhelming (looking at you, From Software and Persona). The soundtrack is iconic from the first few notes of the opening scene and is only better with the orchestral renditions. All this praise and my #1 FF game is X. However, VII is deserving of its place and anyone who calls the game overhyped is simply having a hard time with the graphics and the necessity of reading.
great to see 16 on here, esp in the face of everyone being pissed that Clive is in Tekken, of which ive been having blast playing as him... long live the brothers Rosfield!
So unpopular opinion evidently. I liked FF7 Remake but it lacked the heart and pacing of the original. Stuck in Midgar, I felt like the story got stretched almost to breaking point for a full length game. The game play was generic (to me) and it was a lot of busy work fetch quests. I think after the hype of the recent release subsides, the original will endure and Remake will be a nice graphical side note.
I’m sure that everyone is going to be happy with this list and that nobody will get annoyed by it. lol.

While if the company never merged and still Squaresoft FF would of been much higher numbered. You don't see them have this problem with Dragon Quest because their creator is still with them.
I feel like the ff7 remake series should have only gotten 1 spot, not 2. I like 7, but i feel like this is recency bias.
FF6 is my favorite to the point where I make references to it in the light novel I’m writing
That's cool. I wrote a novella that referenced Ivalice since I love that setting.
Shame that Junction System is a bigger negative than the rest of FFVIII positives
I like junction.. It creates problem just in a second run but.. it is not a multiplayer game so you can balance yourself if you want.
The Junction system is the funnest character progression system in all of the series, in my opinion. The problem with VIII is the draw system.
@@heiral7773 This is the problem with FF8 stans. We understand the junction system and how to break it. Its still stupid imo. A difference of opinion doesn't make someone dumb. Dismissing opinions you don't like as low IQ is though.
XVI over XII is absolute Crazy , FFXII is the Definition of FF
This is the definitive list. Any one that disagrees is wrong and just doesn't know any better.
Tactics A2 - Grimoire of the rift will always be my childhood favourite. 6, 9, 12 are my other favourites
FFTA2 was really good but for some reason I never finished it, despite loving it and TA.
Funny things from FF 14 is during development, Koji Fox idea of Nald'thal used for the graphic test run for Sony Playstation 3, due to the time constraint and fear of failing the pitch, the team using the quote "Thal's Balls" for every single NPC during the pitch.
Unpopular opinion: I really liked XV (Royal Edition)😂
I did too. I liked that it had actual RPG elements after XIII stripped most of it away.
FFXV is a cool game.
I like that they are not all the same.
I love it personally. Noctis is a likeable character and got good development. Plus the open world is huuuuuge
Which other FF did you play? 😅
>tourist that only played 15
Lets gooooooo!
Been looking forward to this one for some time!
It wasn't an issue of not understanding it, just a matter of me not caring at the time
My beloved VIII still not getting the love it deseves 😢
Its expected. The average person (overwhelming majority) have a low IQ.
It doesn't deserve it, sorry. If Kitase does a remake of the real FF8 that he originally planned with Laguna also being a main character instead of the butchered version we all got then maybe it will deserve it.
@@NAzo. Doesn't deserve it? FFVIII OUTSOLD FFVII and at least tried to innovate in it's design. If it weren't for VIII, our character models would still look like blocky midgets. But hey, people who love to play FFVII love to play a temu version of Zack for the better half of the bloody game. FFVIII absolutely deserves respect and is able to stands among the best in the franchise, despite FFVII needing 3 spots on this stupid list...
I was 8 when i beat ff1 on Nintendo, its interesting how a game i couldnt talk about in grade school has become a huge sensation! Im 42 btw and still enjoy the ff franchise
FF Dimensions is the best for me since I've replayed it more times than I ever have any other FF, including FF7 and FF6. It's just so much dang fun with the job system.
People are going to complain about FFXVI as much as they did when XV was launched, and they will only praise this game properly when XVII is released lol
The worst Final Fantasy is always the most recent one. Give it a couple more entries, and XIII will become a stone cold classic.
@@drewtheunspoken3988 It's sad, the games keep changing but the community just doesn't want it to change. FFXVI has flaws but is an amazing experience. I don't think it is a JRPG, more likely an hack n slash, so SE did a poor job marketing it, but anyway, the franchise isn't turn based for almost 2 decades and the "fans" keep whining. I don't believe that they are going to get satisfied with anything, to be honest :/
Everyone's a critic.
15 still isn't hailed as some overlooked classic, though. It has it's strengths and weaknesses, just like everything else, and whether one outweighs the other is going to vary wildly.
For what it's worth, I couldn't finish it. I watched my wife play it, and I loved the brotherly tale it told, but I couldn't pull through myself. I'm also sure if it was my introduction to the series as a kid I would've worshipped it
I still don't like XV, and got bored with XVI's gameplay. If a game only seems good in hindsight, then is it even actually good?
I actually did this survey. And rather than my five words being "what did I think of the game" I answered with five word summaries of the game.
I’ve played 7, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, and tactics advanced
Of those 9 is by far my favorite
>Too expensive
Bro you can play half the game completely for free wtf
They might not only mean financial but the amount of time spent. It takes much longer on FF11 and FF14 then playing the other mainlines maybe even put together.
No FF4 and FF7 Remake over FF6 is criminal
7 may have been famous, but it's also a glitchy mess. All those well know glitches like W-item duplication, overflow, etc, they were never meant to happen in the first place, Square clearly rushed it's development and didn't do enough testing.
6 was definitely ahead of it's time, such a diverse cast, each with a memorable story.
FINAL BAR LINE MENTIONED WOOOOOOOOOO
Hell yeah!
also has the privilege of being the only official NieR rhythm game 🤍🤍
Doesn't at all reflect the width and reach of the series. A list for each type of game (numbered titles, rhythm games, mobile games, etc etc), and with actual opinions from the FFU team would be more interesting. But it's still a titanic task given just how many games there are.
@@rzLl_pz5 list didn't even have FF12. But it had the Rhythm game? I mean come on, that's just crazy. I know it's a community vote list, but with these results. I think it needed more time to collect votes.
1 ff9
2 ff8
3 ff12
4 ff10
5 ff15
For me 🥰
FFIX will always be the best. Rebirth is amazing though
No
Doesnt matter what is here and what order its in, the ff fanbase will mald.
I'm so sad (though not surprised) that FF XII didn't make the list. It's one of my favorites, but it never seems to get the top spot it deserves.
Awesome video. A little surprised that IV didn't appear though
I recently got back into Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2: Grimoire of the Rift. And I want to watch content about it, but RUclips barely has anything on the game other than Class/Job tier lists. Could yall make ANYTHING about the game?
2/3 of players surveyed played FF16. That’s a really high percentage in your sample considering it’s one of the least selling entries in the series. Id be curious if you ran any correlations or just took answers at raw value?
This feels like the channels series finale
I hope. This channel has become the epitome of cheeks
I would have put ff4 instead of theatrym and 1 or 2 games higher but this list is pretty accurate. Good stuff
i was definitely one of those "shallow" commentors on xvi, it's an incredibly half-baked game across the board. it making the cut at all feels like recency bias, but i'll say that much is true about rebirth as well, even though i liked that game a lot more.
And the winner is...NOSTALGIA!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the best Final Fantasy AND the best video game of all time!!!!!
Thank you for including my all time favourite.
Wow! Can't believe Final Fantasy II was Top 3!
😂
Little bummed not to see IV and V in the top 5 but still an interesting list. Also not surprised that the two FF’s considered to be the best in VI and VII have a similar negative issue of overrated or overhyped.
7 and 6 are 2 of the best
I guess you could argue that FF7 IS final fantasy based on the results.
Imho I think that 16 will basically become the FF10 for younger rpg fans.
No it won't.
For me, FF7 OG, FF7 Rebirth and FF6 are the 3 "masterpieces" of the series, FF9 and FF10 get close too but they lack just a tiny bit in some areas.
That's a great list.
I would just switch 9 to 5 and then I fully agree.
I’m in the middle of FF14 Heavensward. I started the game in October.
FF7 taking 3 of the top 4 spots...give me a break
kinda feel the same.... I was a teen when 7 came out and I liked it okay... but it definitely feels like it's part of a larger family of games that all came out as the bulk of the millennial generation was coming of age and is linked with a lot of nostalgia and love from that group. (Ocarina of Time is another game like this I point to as having that same effect)
Not bad games by any stretch, but also incredibly over hyped and dare say overrated... and with the game taking up three spots, feels kind of repeated here
Even though it doesn't have the best graphics. I always thought 6 was the best just on the story alone.
Wish they would remake it but either it would be like 3 games. Or they would have to chop it a lot.
They could do a HD-2D remake like Dragon Quest III or Star Ocean 2.
I go FF7, Tactics, FF10, FF8, FF9, FF6, FF12, FF15, FF3, FF5.
This is a "interesting" list for sure but great video none the less. I also want to ask if you will do a video of Fantasian Deo Dimension in future?
Thanks for the FF content 🖤
You cut out the middleman, yourselves, and edited an echo-chamber into existence in a video format
It'll certainly make the comment section more interesting, and make it easy to spot who didn't even watch the video
Cope Redditor.
surprised to see 16 on this list. i loved it but def left alot on the table. Coulda have been a 10/10 masterpiece with better pacing, removing some bloat, better side quest variety, more RPG elements/growth mechanics, and a better third act
i love it and it still gets a 8.5 from me but man, it really coulda been in that upper echelon
Final fantasy 16: epic, dark and beautiful; boring, shallow and repetitive. Couldn’t have put it better.
hot take: FFVII remake is just a cash grab. lets take a beloved game, split it into 3 70$ games, and make sure there is no carry over between them.
Oh wow. This list is spot on : )
I guess statistics can be fun
Aside from entries 10 & 9, not surprised by the results. Lot of FF 7 x)
Too bad my boys 8, 12 or TA didn't make it to that list :/
8 is the one that need a remake the most !
honestly I think 6 needs it more... considering it's one of the oldest games in the series to never get any kind of proper update (and no the mobile version and pixel remasters don't count) Not to mention it really could use modern development being able to better and more deeply tell its story. Cartridge memory limitations kind of restricted it back in the day
As someone who didn’t enjoy 8, I absolutely agree that 8 should get a remake.
I think I'm the only person that likes final fantasy 4 more than final fantasy 6
This is a very interesting list if I’m being honest
I do have a lot of FF games I am willing to Rank one day I will share it.
I knew I was about to be assaulted by Final Fantasy VII at the top 😂. Any fan voted ranking is so predictable. I am surprised XVI made is so high though.
Knives out everyone
Atma weapons and a genji glove ready.
I’m scared to see where ff13 is on the list
FF6, FF4, FF9, FF10 and FF16 in that order for me
FFVII has one of, if not the best cast of characters in gaming.
Perfect list ❤❤❤
great to see 16 on here, esp in the face of everyone being pissed that Clive is in Tekken, of which ive been having blast playing as him... long live the brothers Rosfield!
Did none of you fill in the multiple survey's they did on this channel? 😂
today im feeling like ff tactics is the best
I dont like MMOs but FF14 Story is Amazing to Endwalker. Havent played the new One yet.
I'm always here for the fights in the comment section 😂🧐
So unpopular opinion evidently. I liked FF7 Remake but it lacked the heart and pacing of the original. Stuck in Midgar, I felt like the story got stretched almost to breaking point for a full length game. The game play was generic (to me) and it was a lot of busy work fetch quests. I think after the hype of the recent release subsides, the original will endure and Remake will be a nice graphical side note.
14, 6, 7, 10, 4 . . . in that order.
FFXIII should be on that list
FfX is #1 for me.
My favorite is Final Fantasy 8
Yeah this list is kinda goated imo
WRONG! #1 is Xenogears. The game was so good it was rejected and made its own franchise instead! :D
Who took this survey
Interesting list
idk if I voted on this one or not
IT'S TOO HARD TO CHOOSE!
nostalgia is a hell of a drug
