I can’t tell you how much I LOVE this series of videos on FF8. It’s like listening to an audio book, and makes playing the game again even more powerful. Your work is incredibly fascinating and to be able to get all of this backstory from developers and non-western material makes me appreciate this game even more than I already did. Bravo!
What an amazing series. I had no idea FF8 was this deep. I played it over 20 years ago, and now I want to get back to it. I'll be donating to your channel now to show my appreciation.
When they inevitably remake FF8, I hope that Laguna's story is fleshed out with broader detail. His story is full of so much hardship and perseverance, all of which is against seemingly impossible odds. It could fill an entire game on its own, I'm sure.
Oh please no... they already ruined VII - They need to call it quits with Remakes already. They managed it fine twice with IV but with the Nomura convolution that seems to be a thing these days, plus the insistence of including DEI - I'd rather pass.
@@The_Phoenix_Saga So long as they keep Nomura FAR away from it, it should be fine. The games that tend to be the biggest messes are the ones where they have given him any kind of directorial control. Cool character designer, terrible video game director.
I've watched a lot of videos on this channel, but this... this one takes the cake. I would certainly welcome more videos of this style. Massive kudos to Final Fantasy Union staff !!!
This video alone is why FFVIII should be the very next game to get a remake. It has soooo much lore in the past and dual timeliness to make it worth it, and have that dream officially realized!
Absolutely adoring these. As someone who learned how to read in the early years watching mom play Final Fantasy 8, and would later have it become one of my favorite games of all time, this series truly warms my heart.
I love this series of videos about FF8!! Really puts the story into an easier to understand format. Would love to see you and your team take on the new added lore in FF7 Rebirth regarding things like the floating city of Junon
love ff8 videos, but you missed what that """""static""""" was. It was Adel screaming in radio waves. The text in the static reads : I AM ALIVE HERE BRING ME BACK THERE I WILL NEVER LET YOU FORGET ABOUT ME I WILL NEVER LET YOU BOUND ME BACK
Adel was not the source of the static, that was the jamming devices trying to contain her power. The messages in the static are her attempts to break through it.
Something I've never been able to understand is how a certified good egg like Laguna could countenance never coming into contact with his son. He's busy, sure, but he's also one of the most powerful people on earth, surely there's resources in Esthar for orphans etc
Agreed. Maybe avoidance? Like I can pretend everything is fine unless I'm confronted with the reality of my son and dead wife? Either way, pretty shitty of him.
Esthar was still far from a safe place for Laguna's son. They had just toppled a dictator. And even though most of the populace saw Laguna as a hero, i can absolutely see some people who held positions of power and privilege under Adel resenting Laguna and waiting for an opportunity to bring him to fall. Also, Odyne was incredibly dangerous and Laguna had to hide Ellone from him and even from himself, because he knew he couldn't controll that man. Squall, living in Esthar as Laguna's son would have been an easy hostage for Odyne to take and demand Ellone to be given to him in exchange.
Laguna only learned about Squall when grown up Ellone showed up in Esthar! Remember, communications were complicated and he never went back to Galbadia, he didn't know he had a son.
@@XofHope.this! I was surprised at the video's interpretation - that Laguna had purposely not gone back for his son and Ellone... What? He just risked his (Kiros + Ward) life to get Ellone back, and she wasn't even blood. If he had known about Raine being pregnant, that might have changed his decision to send Ellone back alone. Raine probably had no idea where he was and so wouldn't be able to contact him. So how would he have found about Squall until after the fact? Kinda bummed at the character attack in the video.
I love these deep dives into ff8 lore. There is so much that I missed as a kid playing this game. Thank you for explaining it all and I look forward to the rest of the story!
I always considered that Ellone sending Squall and Co back to the past enabled Laguna and crew to use the magic the former had junctioned without having to directly use a GF. Making them A LOT more powerful than they would have been originally. Maybe when Ellone told Laguna about this in the present, this convinced Laguna that the Seed were their best bet which is why they were so quick to ask Squall to defeat Ultamecia etc. Head cannon, but a cool concept.
Man you got no idea how much I love these complete timeline series. I am grateful to you guys for all the love and effort you have put into this labor of love
For clarification, he didn't know Squall even existed till much later and he expressly didn't take Elone because he was afraid of Dr. Odine trying to experiment on her. Look Laguna may be a very flawed person, but he didn't just abandon his kids because he couldn't deal with the emotions
FFVIII is my favorite FF game to this day, with the FFVII and FFVII Remake Duology (up to this point) coming in close second. Watching this series of videos made me learn a ton of lore I had missed, or misunderstood. So, I reached the conclusion that this is the game, which would benefit the most from a proper remake, that would feature better storytelling and would also give Laguna and party the screen-time they deserved! Or maybe, a proper prequel featuring just Laguna's story. I would be down for that too!
Bro is cooking hard, I just found out your channel and you keep pushing Upload, thank you. By the way, could you make a short that explains why most of pre-FFXI-era final fantasies had so cryptic and convoluted side quests probably so that companies could sell strategy guides, that being the very reason that itch isnt probably going to be scratched in new instalments?
Straight up amazing series. I've played this game many times from its release date forward, and there's tons here I'm learning for the first time. I've always enjoyed every aspect of VIII far more than VII, but this series may have escalated VIII to the status of my most appreciated non-Ivalice FF lore. If y'all can male such amazing content for VIII, I can't imagine what you'd do for the world of Ivalice.
Such a great series - thank you! After 25 years I’m still discovering the amazing lore of this game. Surely in the next part we will go full circle and uncover the true antagonist in the story? Ultimecia is just a vessel….just like Edea, Adel and Rinoa.

Great job, except for one detail that still gets people confused. Laguna only learned about Squall when grown up Ellone showed up in Esthar, he didn't know he had a son for most of Squall's life!

..This video is a proof that I was too young when I finished FF8 for the first time as I did not comprehend most part of this video. FFVIII has a mature theme
these lore videos have been great, bout time FF8 got some love! my very first FF game, and my very first jrpg! my favorite part is how like heavily fate is involved in this story. I mean squall falls in love with his estranged fathers ex lovers daughter. its like that love story with those bloodlines were redeemed in the next generation.
Great job. Very interesting insight into ffviii story How come Laguna never wrote to Raine to check how she's doing? Wow, Laguna leaves his keeds because losing Raine is tough on him and never considered how that is for them or to be without parental guidance at that time. Father of the year.
I figured that even if he did write to her (we don't even know how they do mail in the game. Chocobo carriers? Train?), she wouldn't really be able to reply (as he was going all over the world. I thought maybe he just had a subscription of Timber Maniacs sent her way as a sort of update. As for the kids, he didn't know Raine was pregnant and didn't find out about Squall until Ellone told him in space.
@Ikomanderz could have typed a few sentences for her in the magazine and she could have replied in the same manner, I suppose. He found about about Squall in space and then came back and chose to leave him amd Ellone in the care of Windmill cause he couldn't handle Raine's passing. They were sent to the orphanage. Didn't even inquire about them, supposedly. (As the vid says) I empathize with his grief, but that's awful parenting.
I don't mind ambiguity in a story, but I don't like stories that clearly aren't finished. One of the many, many plot issues with Final Fantasy VIII was how they pulled out all stops to *imply* that Laguna was Squall's father, but never actually did anything with it. At no point does Squall confront his absentee father for abandoning him, despite this feeling of abandonment being an essential part of the reason why Squall is such a mopey brat that everyone seems to like for some reason for most of the game.
I feel it makes sense enough. Remember the world was still a dangerous place in the wake of the sorceress war. If you imagine Laguna did indeed at some point find out were both Ellone and Squall ended up (at Edea's orphanage), it was basically the safest outcome like this, while Laguna battled with the politics and containment of Adel in Esthar. All this was also necessary to lead Squall and all the others on their path to victory, so to say, even if nobody knew at that point, which is perfectly fine for a story twist like this. Squall is also grown and grounded enough at this point to realize what Laguna actually achieved in all this time (despite the comical relief when they learned of each other in full) and how he is basically a hero after all (and everything he did ultimately was to keep Ellone safe), despite being forced to leave Raine, Squall and Ellone behind earlier. Now it was up to Squall with all puzzle pieces in place and everyone reunited to finish what his father started.
You hit it on the nail. It's unfinished. I think FFU has covered before that the game was rushed, had its budget slashed, and had its content slashed. Some ideas were let go out squashed together. So I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that would make the story make more sense but it got lost in the edit, and now to memory and time.
Well recommended tab definitely worked. and I clicked this video so fast....... Watched the full thing., and was hyped AF to watch part 2. HOWEVER, I hadn't noticed this was just uploaded today..... man, please dont let it take weeks.... lol :D This is my fav FF game. and second in all of Square only to Xenogears. if oyu made a video about xenogears and its history and its connection to FF7 that would be dope, Xeno is so underrated for what it was at the time, that game had 12 yr old me in a headspin and a headlock. i was HOOKED by the complexity and twists in the story, the depth of that world.... it really is no wonder how Xeno became a whole separate franchise. Xeno wasnt the right fit to be FF7 for sure, but it still did a lot for video games and rpg's and has a lot to do with Square and what they became. I payed ff7 first, then i heard rumors about ff7's failed concept that still got made into a game.. so i played and it was like crack to me. Those 2 games made me a big Square fan but also a jrpg fan.Without them i never would've played any rpg's. i was a football nerd but one of my friends pulled it out at a sleep over and i watched him play for hours. So i convinced my mom to buy a copy, been a Square fan for life ever since, not everything is a banger imo but imagine a world without Squaresoft?Squarenix... that's a sad world for video games lovers. I got my playstation in 1998 for xmas when i was 9. so 1999 i got Chrono Cross, Legend of Dragoon, FF8, legend of mana, Parasite eve 2, FF anthologys.....ALL THOSE BANGERS @10 yr old all throughout 1999. iI barely even remember the Y2K stuff because i was locked into my crt tv everyday. LOL We will never have a better year than what Square had in 1999 at least for the " culture", even if the game was a flop. that whole lineup has mega fans to this day.
Honestly all this is why FF8 needs a Remake. They won't even have to add in a bunch of extra fluff and filler such as Arenas, Monster Hunts, and etc. They'd just need to add in "Laguna's Campaign" and it'd be a thrilling experience.
Throught this timeline series I came to understand why Laguna is so loved. I still prefer Squall's personality, but Laguna's story is so tightly plotted and cool that people couldn't help but love him.
Sadly I was too young when I played the game to understand the depth of the story and the characters' entanglement. When I was old enough, I didn't pick it up again, because I was too distracted with other great more current games..
"To call Doctor Odine evil was a misnomer, however. He couldn't care less about the fate of the world or who ruled it. All he cared about was his research." That statement could be applied to Professor Hojo in Final Fantasy VII as well, who is undeniably evil. In fact, Hojo is one of the most evil protagonists in the FF franchise, arguably more evil than President Shinra, Rufus and Sephiroth.
My favourite bit of lore in this game is literally this floating satellite imprisoned witch causing the interference across the world comms and its just her ranting across rhe radio waves in the static hahaha xP
I know it was in the last video but it hit me, Adel is a woman but with the body that looks like a man. I always thought Adel was a man. And I cant remember the cutscene with them sending up Adel and sending up the three ragnaroks...
As the nerd that read every piece of dialog as a 10 year old, I honesrly believed that hyne was going to be the final boss. Alos, this nerd couldn't beat the game without a game shark, and Rinoa is Ultimecia. I'll die on that hill!!!
Man, Adel feels like the most odd character in any Final Fantasy game. Her man boobs, just simply fits more of a Duke Nukem villain if Duke simply time travel and defeat the boss with this.
I've always thought ff8 story is wackadoo. I played it when I was about 8yrs old, spanish is my mother language and didn't understand much english so as I went through the story I always felt like the story was SO weird, I thought it was cuz I was understanding it all wrong but seems like I was right? Haha I absolutely love this game and it helped me learn a lot of english vocabulary.

Agreed, there's so much potential with Laguna. It'll be interesting to see whether they ever choose to act on that potential though. ~Darryl
Hoping for the day it happens. I think this story can get so much more depth added with the same treatment they gave ff7.
Oh please no... they already ruined VII - They need to call it quits with Remakes already. They managed it fine twice with IV but with the Nomura convolution that seems to be a thing these days, plus the insistence of including DEI - I'd rather pass.

Adel sure has fallen. From selling millions of records to becoming an evil sorceress. What an arc.
🤣🤣🤣
she got corrupted by the use of steroids
Brilliant
I'm pretty sure it's the other way around, this Adel was famous long before the other one!

its not the time for the static yet. They may mention it when we get to the timeline of the main game since its all going in chronological order.
Merry Christmas. 🎄🙂

VIII has so much heart it's unbelievable.
great material o/
Will you be covering the events of the future? That is something I am looking forward to as i don't know alot about Ultimicia's time.
somehow I kinda want to see more of these kinds of videos are there any plans on making more of these after FF8 ?
I am playing part of Pizza Hut demo desk
Not surprised here ❤

Bring on part 4!!!!!
AMAZING
Me: wow Laguna sounds pretty cool!
Laguna: wife died time to become a deadbeat dad
For those who don't know, the singer Adele is a distant relative of Adel just like how Rinoa is Ultimecia
"Hello from the other side" indeed
Ah it is fictional documentary time again! Thanks!
I watched the previous videos but still unsure if Adel's decent into villainy could still be the affect of Ultimecia?
four discs, four parts. perfectly balanced.
"To call Doctor Odine evil was a misnomer, however. He couldn't care less about the fate of the world or who ruled it. All he cared about was his research."
That statement could be applied to Professor Hojo in Final Fantasy VII as well, who is undeniably evil. In fact, Hojo is one of the most evil protagonists in the FF franchise, arguably more evil than President Shinra, Rufus and Sephiroth.
Is there a playlist where I can watch these in order
My favourite bit of lore in this game is literally this floating satellite imprisoned witch causing the interference across the world comms and its just her ranting across rhe radio waves in the static hahaha xP
What about her speaking in the radio waves? Seems like a massive point to just omit.
Do we know what happens to the other girls who were taken in the hunt for the Sorceress?
Maybe it's just been a long time since I played this game, but I don't remember half of these details.
I know it was in the last video but it hit me, Adel is a woman but with the body that looks like a man. I always thought Adel was a man.
And I cant remember the cutscene with them sending up Adel and sending up the three ragnaroks...
I believe you get that cutscene if you ask Laguna how he ended up as president of Esthar, although it's been a while since I last played FF8.
Honestly, I kinda like FF8's story after hearing your breakdown. I just wish Kitase/Nojima did a better job presenting it to me.
FF8 definitely got the lore part right
As the nerd that read every piece of dialog as a 10 year old, I honesrly believed that hyne was going to be the final boss.
