- Here are some top 3 reasons to live in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I've lived in Steamboat Springs for 8 years. The other perspective is from 3 months. See more video at: www.SteamboatsMyHome.com
Top 3 reasons NOT to live in steamboat:
1.You can't afford a home and the rent is insanely expensive.
2. Unless you are already rich or a trust fund kid, get ready to work 3 jobs in order to pay your rent and hope for enough at the end of the week for a cheap happy hour at Mohogany.
3. Everyone is drunk, all the time. I lived there for 5 years and all of the friends I had there have either been arrested for heroin, Lost all they have to multiple DUI's, dead, killed themselves or fled to the front range with what little money they could scrape together. FYI: None of my friends did ANY drugs when I was there; same with my wife and her friends. The people get to you after a while; there are two classes of people in Steamboat: People with money and people that work and slave away for people with money. And it aint going to get any better.
AND 4: I know I said 3, but this place deserves a 4th reason. Weird shit happens there, a LOT! Ever hear of the Black Widow? She married men, took out huge insurance policies on them then killed them and collected. She lived in Steamboat. When I lived there I knew a happy couple with an 8 year old boy. That couple was working through a separation when the woman in the relationship decided to take the one thing her soon to be ex husband loved most in the world; their son. She shot him 3 times in the chest with a .22 pistol and that boy died in his fathers arms. There was a beautiful young girl about to be married and her soon to be husbands cousin came to the wedding and got there a couple of days early. He "snapped", strangled the bride to be to death and raped her. I could go on and on. Just read the police blotter if you want to know about Steamboat; it used to be low crime but now it is a cesspool. Meth, heroin and crack abound as well as weird murder suicides. Don't even get me started about the corrupt cops and city officials there! Believe me, I know Steamboat. I won't be coming back any time soon.
Sorry you had such a bad experience in Steamboat. Sounds like a new start somewhere else was great for you. I happen to find Steamboat a great place to live. All the best.
That is true of every resort in the country; whether it be pristine beaches or ski resorts. It's a two class society, the haves and the have nots. Alcohol and drug abuse is high for the working class. But the recreational opportunities abound for all. It is a great life if you have your priorities straight.
I lived in Steamboat for 32 years. I'm not rich, just an average working stiff. I've had my problems and things have been tough at times. Rent is expensive but not as bad as other resort towns. I've never worked three jobs and very rarely two and I've always managed. My friends weren't always drunk although we aren't adverse to downing a few beers and having a good time. Oh sure, we've been drunk but not constantly. You say that friends were drunk and/or got arrested for heroin then turn around and say that none of them did drugs when you were here. Well, which is it? And whose fault is it if someone gets arrested for DUI? If your friends were drunk all the time and getting arrested for heroin it sounds like you were hanging with a pretty low life crowd. I don't know, and have never known, anyone doing meth, heroin or crack but I'm aware of their presence. I wouldn't say those drugs are in abundance though. A lot of people have moved here with nothing and made a decent living. As far as crime goes, yes, some horrific crimes have happened but they get intensified by the smallness and remoteness of the city. Unfortunately, things like that happen all the time in towns and cities all across the nation. Steamboat is a great community that has problems just like any other town or resort and it's hardly a cesspool. You don't know shit about Steamboat and judging from your experience here it's obviously a better place without you.
Latest story from Business Insider is that the city can't find anyone to take a $167k/yr head of HR job due to housing prices. When normal people can't afford to live in or near the town they work in with that kind of salary, you may have a problem.
I used to run A milkroute there from 79 to 82.Sure do miss Steamboat
You cannot get a real newspaper daily delivered (Denver Post, Wall St. Journal, NY Times) except on Sundays. Lincoln Ave. (downtown) traffic is as bad as anything in Denver.
Wynona's for breakfast mmmmmmmmmmm
