  • In this video I will be explaining some facts about the APU. I will tell you what it is used for and, if you stay tuned to the end, you will see a real APU start from inside the cockpit.
    Enjoy my friends!

You blew my mind. I know it isn't a real 737 that I was experimenting with in a simulator (Xplane 11 737-800) But, I tried the crossbleed start from one engine to another and freaking worked. You never cease to amaze me!

You can also connect warm (not only cold) air externally and it's common in the colder months up here.

I remember being on an early morning flight out of a small airport. Just as we were walking up to a CRJ, the pilot had us wait outside the plane, as they were having problems with the APU not starting. Thanks for the video.

Thanks! We had trouble with the APU starting on our flight from JFK to Copenhagen on a 767. We had already been pushed out and had to come back into the gate while mechanics tried starting it. Jet fuel odor in the cabin was very strong. I didn’t know if it was a major concern or not.

Due to economic factors I couldn't afford for Pilot training and have ended up in IT industry but I'm still a big big fan of Pilots and your RUclips videos, android apps and Instagram accounts are making me happy since I'm at-least able see / understand the basics of flying aircrafts. How much power does the GPU provide? I'm guessing it outputs 3-phase 200V, but is it sufficient to run everything on the plane? It seems like that power cable is kind of small to power both buses.

Once I was told about the power of a medium size APU (go and figure what they mean by medium) is around 400KVA which is a LOT. You can power 4 or 5 residencial buildings from that figure. Guess the AC unit on the plane needs serious power.

The 131-9 APU on the 737-NG is rated for 90 kVA electrical power (66 kVA above 31000 ft), and the older APUs used in the 737 series even less.

Great video as always Mr. Mentour but I have a question. We see that the apu on this particular airplane has the inoperative sticker on it...isnt apu a critical thing when it comes to an emergency? How can an airplane get operational allowance without having an operating apu?? Thank you in advance

Anyways, im always curious. For triple engined planes like the dc series, where do the exhaust gasses exit? I cant see any pther holes other than the apu exhaust where the exhaust of the 3rd engine can pass. Do they share exhaust exit? (Pardon if there are mistakes on the terminologies)

Hi Mentour. Why might the APU not be functional before a flight? You make it sound like it's a common thing to happen, and they seem like a fairly important part of an aircraft to me, so why do they not repair them as soon as possible?

There's a lot of ignorance. People just board the plane and sit down. They know little or care how it operates. They think auto pilot means the plane completely flies itself. A robot could be in the cockpit.

Mentour!! I am 13 and I live in the Netherlands. I have been interested in flight since I was 6. This year I flew a boeing 737-800 on a flight simulator and I loved it!! Now I want to be a pilot but everything and everyone says that the chance is 95% that you'll waste your money on the pilot education because you won't get a job. Is it really that bad!!!?? Im only thirteen so I have lots of years to decide but I want something to work towards. Is there a chance that in 4 to 6 years the ods of becoming a pilot increased? I want to become a pilot so bad!! If I can't be a pilot on an airline what are other jobs that are ascociated with flight? Thanks in advance!

You do an excellent job with these explanations. I was curious - do you have much trouble with hot starts on the apu? I've never had the opportunity to use one, as we relied on ground support equipment on everything I flew. I'm sure you have all kinds of automatic controls for such an event, just wondered if the hot starts were even possible due to auto intervention.

I skip that too, why bother ?
Just connect the battery, start the APU, connect the two main AC buses, then open the APU bleed air valve, turn on the fuel pumps and begin the main engine start "procedure".
Once the main engines are started begin the powerback, line up on the runway, then just TAKE OFF !
      (Granted it's all happening on X-Plane 11...)

If you had a double engine flame out (flying through an ash cloud for example) would you be able to restart the engines without it? Also wouldn't you then be entirely reliant on the RAT thus removing a whole layer of redundancy?

Battery power is 28 VDC and AC power is 115 volts but at 400 Hz not 50 like the rest of the world, or 60 like Canada the USA & Mexico. Higher frequencies mean transformers can be much lighter weight. Some parts of upstate New York ran on 25 Hz, and you had to buy special 25Hz rated appliances and radios or they would simply burn up. They all had heavier motors and transformers in them, and this cost between 10% and 50% more than a 60 Hz unit.

*Why are airliner Air Conditioners so weak? Is it to save costs?*

    • @Bear-cm1vl
      @Bear-cm1vl 6 лет назад +1

      Cody, two primary factors to be considered;
      1. The aircraft uses the expansion of compressed air for cabin cooling, a system that is simple, effective and requires minimal additional parts and small duct systems to save on the weight and maintenance needs, both critical for an aircraft.
      2. The majority of It's working life, a commercial airliner spends around 35,000 feet above the ground with surrounding air temperatures of about -60°F, an environment where the need for additional cooling is minimal.

Vor is flying with visual reference. ILS is instrument landing with no visual cues. In training they put a hood shield over your face to practice in flight without seeing as it would be in dark or bad weather conditions. So you use only yor altimeter and gauges to fly. Multi engine is 2 or more engines. You must know what sequence to start engines on the ground and in the air. Crossfeed fuel fron one to the other. Know how to shut down an engine in the event of fire or damage. They are 2 completely different aspects of flight tests. Two separate items. You can do ILS in a one engine aircraft. Do you get the differences?

As a jet engine is not quite fuel efficient, why is the APU a jet engine? Are there any reasons other than reliability to not use a piston engine?

This long controlled delays before starting the APU, what happens if you want to use it and start the engine in the air?, will you be waiting for this long before starting the failled engines to recover from falling from the sky?

You can windmill start the engines in the air...😉
And its not that long anyway..

I still don't understand, is the APU supposted to run all along the flight, or is it turned off once the engines are started? I'm a bit confused by the word "auxiliary" because it looks like a critical component to me, the aircraft can't start without it, so why "auxiliary"? For me it would make sense to use an "auxiliary" power unit for emergencies only (e.g., complete failure in both engines).

The APU can be turned off once the main engines are started, although leaving it on during the flight doesn't do much except it uses extra fuel.

    Dear Capt.,
When you turn off the APU?

I've always wondered. What is the purpose of the switch? between the attendant call and ground call buttons?

Call attendant is basically the same as passengers.
Pilot presses it and it dings in the cabin, although it's a different sound than if it was a passenger so the cabin crew knows the call is coming from the cockpit.
Ground call is a beeper in the nose landing gear wheel well.
It's loud enough to get the attention of ground staff around the plane, however once an engine is running it can't be heard anymore.
It's the closest to a horn for an airliner.
