We almost never waste food. If we have "leftovers" I can usually tell before we begin eating and I pack up some for my mom's elderly neighbor before we begin eating. Consider an elderly person that lives near you. And if you pack up the food before your family eats it isn't leftovers you are giving away, it becomes an intended meal for someone in need. I always keep her in mind when I cook and I know she is home. This all began when I saw her in the grocery store put something back that I know she needed. SO sometimes we even get her some groceries. People everywhere are suffering but you don't always notice. Consider your neighbors for those leftovers.

Buy single bananas! Broken off singles are much less likely to be picked in the store, since most people buy a bunch. If you find singles, buy them, since they're more likely to be tossed!

I would, but in the area I'm in, it's cheaper for me to buy whole bunches due to my rewards card. But I guess adding a few singles shouldn't hurt. Although I know it's going to annoy the cashiers because they have different code numbers than the ones I buy...

My grandfather owns a small farm where he grows all kind of fruits common in my area (oranges, lemons, watermelons, apples, pears, cherries, figs, plums, cactus pears...) without using any pesticides or any kind of chemicals. He does not sell the produce (it's enough only for our family) and I grew up eating fruit usually a bit "bruised" or with a small hole from a little worm... It's perfectly ok, you cut it and get out the worm and you can still eat it! I got engaged with a "city boy" and noticed that he always discart vegetables on their look even though they are perfectly fine, and that really got me wonder how people are not used to have a bruised apple or a cracked orange and they don't know how much chemicals and process are necessary to keep them in standard of "beautifulness". If you grow your fruit totally naturally, you will get smaller, less pretty fruits. But you will surely earn in health and flavour!
    (sorry for my english).

Our grocery store has started a misfit produce section. Produce that is less than perfect (mis-shappen, spots on skin, etc.) but still perfectly edible is in this section and sold at about 40% less than the perfect produce. I thought that was just a great idea.

this comes from a good place, and there are some good things in here, but most food waste comes from corporations/restaurants very little is actually from the individual consumption. Continuing the narrative of food waste being an individual caused issue only benefits billionaires who under pay workers and over price their foods.

    • @strawberrycherrybaby
      @strawberrycherrybaby 6 лет назад +4

Yes!! And more comes from people/companies not '''''being allowed''''' to donate unused or unsold food. My Starbucks used to throw out 15-20 sandwiches/pastries/etc PER DAY just because they were in the display case. Sometimes they we're a tad stale, but I'd imagine they still taste good, especially since most donated food is gross canned food.

In Denmark we now simply recycle organic waste (into compost, that is). The problem with food waste is probably more of "the salad I got is going sad and rotting away before I manage to eat it" or "my avocados are all ripe at the same time and I can't eat all of them", and less of "I'm not using my potato peels for anything useful!" ;-)

Potato peels should be treated with caution anyway. Potatoes produce solanin (which is poisones) and concentrate it in the green parts of the plant and the skin of the tubers so they doesn't get eaten by pests. Ever since potatoes are grown for food people tried to breed the solanin out of the poptato skins, and with newer cultivars they succeded. But more classical cultivars still have enough solanin in their skins to severly upset your stomach if you eat them, and heat does not destroy that solanin. The same applies to potatoes of newer cultivars that have been exposed to light long enough to turn the skin green. The peeled potatoes are still fine to eat, the skins not so much.

I was raised in a family where I had to finish everything on my plate and if we had leftovers, we had to finish them all before cooking something else. When I entered high school where we ate in a cafeteria, I was absolutely disgusted and shocked that I was nearly the only person finishing everything i had bought. Almost everyone just throws away beaten apples, non tasty food or anything rlly.
So honestly the least you could do is just finish everything you buy even if they’re not as tasty as you expected them, ect.

I am absolutely shocked by the numbers at the beginning of this video. I hardly ever throw away any food. I plan my meals, I know exactly what is in my fridge so nothing goes to waste. The little pieces that I must throw away go in the compost. Here, in Germany some supermarkets started selling "ugly" produce like weird shaped carrots and apples for a little less than the pretty ones. I really enjoyed this video! :)

Using coffee grounds to repel deer WORKS! You will need to replenish them around your plants at least once a week and after hard rainfall. If you need immediate deer repellent while waiting for your coffee ground supply to build up, pour some peppermint oil into a clean spray bottle and fill with distilled water. Spray bottles with both mist and stream options are best. Use mist to spray plants close to you and stream to get the hard to reach plants.

I put extra apples in pie or homemade applesauce, leftover bad lettuce goes into the woods for rabbits (or I regrow my lettuce using the stem), tomatoes that are going bad get thrown into a homemade spaghetti sauce. I also buy lots of frozen fruits and veggies so they don't go bad quickly.

I love these ideas, especially the veggie broth!
Here's another idea for you- I'm a textile artist and a lot of the plant waste people throw away can be turned into beautiful dyes! I clean and keep avocado pits and skins (they make a gorgeous blush pink), onion skins, banana peels, black beans, beat ends, turmeric and red cabbage. Once you collect about 1 cup of your selected dyestuff, just cover with water and bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for about 2 hours. Then strain and keep in the fridge for about 4 months. Add your item to a pot and simmer for an hour. (You can also leave with the head off overnight). Rinse in cold water by hand.
This is a quick, Eco friendly way to dye!

I have started putting avocados in ice cube trays (maybe it was you who suggested this Alyssia). When I buy avocados, they are always too hard. Then, in about 5 minutes, they go to mush. I find if I buy a four pack of avocados, I should put at least 2 in the ice cube trays for freezing.

The oven electricity bill will cost 10 times more than throwing skin of potato out. A better cost effective way to discard food and paper waste is to compost it into manure for the plants at your home. That is what I do, it is practically effortless and takes care of all your biodegradable waste.

I do something similar to your stock almost every week with a slow cooker. Just a couple of jars that rarely last long enough to need more than chilling. Given random ingredients it never tastes exactly the same, but I consider that a bonus.
Just vegetables - I've tried dropping in a couple of slices of leftover ham, but I've yet to make up my mind about that.
I cook with the stock, of course, but I also often start and finish a cold day by microwaving a large cupful with a pinch of paprika and drinking it with a nice slice of crusty bread and butter. I used to buy cup soups, but not any more.
I make pease pudding too, and cook the split peas in this stock - slow cooker again.

Hard herbs like rosemary and thyme can be rinsed, dried, and frozen as-in in a ziplock bag! And "soft" herbs like parsley and cilantro can keep for weeks, if not a month, in the fridge if you store the cut ends in a jar or glass full of water and put a baggie over it to keep the moisture from evaporating. (I usually use the produce bag I brought them home in, and then loosely twist and tuck the end in to keep it sealed.) I do it as soon as I get home from the store with them so I can't forget! I rarely toss parsley anymore, and I only have to buy it about once a month!

You can fry melon seeds with a pinch of salt, they are super tasty. For milk add sugar half the volume of milk and boil until the water is evaporated.. keep stirring now and then while boiling.. you will start seeing granules of milk solids.. the semi sticky result you get is a great dessert here in India. Also we don't peel potatoes before cooking.

Just watch out with the eggshell hack in regards to salmonella. In the US eggs are washed before they are sold, so would be fine to use as is. In other countries they aren't washed before selling (which is why they don't have to refrigerated) but this means that the outside of the eggshell can have salmonella bacteria on it from faeces, so you would have to disinfect the shells in some way before consuming.

Actually that washing removes a naturally antibacterial coating on the eggs, which is why Americans have to refrigerate their eggs, or they'll get contaminated with bacteria and rot. If you farm your own eggs, they'll keep for 1-3 weeks (unwashed and unrinsed) on the counter perfectly fine, due to the natural coating.

Herbs don't need to be blanched or anything before freezing. Just chop them, put them into a bag and freeze them. They don't lose color over time. I still have some frozen parsley from the last year and it looks as good as it was when it was getting frozen. The wilting and stuff mentioned in the video is the result of puring hot water over it and then freezing herbs with it. Your herbs need to be dry before chopping them and then freezing.

    1. what if someone just likes the taste of cauliflower broth :v they way you say "stay away" from those is like smething is gonna happen... and that can only cause someone actually throwing out broccoli insead of utilizing it
    2. i don't se point of keeping bread crumbs in the fridge/freezer. If bread is properly dried it can last months in normal container on the shelf (my family does that for years)
    3. to use potato skin as chips you have to clean them really well. You didn't say that but i think it is rather obvious... tho if you already scrub your potatoes clean, what is the point of peeling them at all - you can make so called in my country potatoes in uniforms, baked or cooked, probably even better than peeled ones (tho while cooking the smell is a bit more intense!)
    4. egg yolks you can also just use as egg yolk only scrambled eggs?
    5. coffee seeds as a natural deodorant works only if you like coffee smell and you have to be aware that your whole fridge and uncovered food (like cottage cheese that easily takes up other fridge smells) WILL smell and kinda taste like a bitter coffee seed.

Good info! Most of the decorative pumpkins sold around halloween are pumpkins that can be stored in a closet or under a bed for a few months and then roasted like a butternut squash. I point this out because so many people put them on their porches and then throw them out after thanksgiving. Extra eggs can be blended, divided into a greased muffin, and frozen. Pop those out, put them in a freezer bag, and keep them in the freezer until you need them. We grow a good portion of our own food so we compost and I cringed when you threw away your coffee grounds.
