Wow! I got goosebumps hearing ITV's 'World Championship Boxing' theme tune again. Nigel has and always will be my idol, absolutely adore him. I remember watching this live as a 12 year old, shadow boxing before and after in anticipation and celebration. This the first of two world titles both won on foreign soil, never done by a brit before. When i met Nigel, he told me that this was his best fight. LEGEND 💙👑🥊 Dave, thanks for uploading this and all your other footage of this great man. It's much appreciated sir. 🙏🏼👍🏼
De Witt stated that Nigel Benn was the hardest puncher he'd ever been in with, that he punched harder than Hearns even, as was evidenced here. Exciting fight; De Witt gave it his best shot in his first defence, but, even his granite chin couldn't stand up to the punching power of Nigel Benn, as Iran Barkley found out in Benn's first defence, following this fight. Thanks for uploading.
Dewitt was teak tough so for Nigel to do a number on him in the states was a big statement.Add the wins over mcclellan,Barkley,gGalvano in Italy and his classics with Eubank and you have one of Britain's greatest ever fighters.
@@NemeanLion- he ďidnt look shot. Came out fast and aggressive and looked sharp. Yes he was past his best but shot?. I'd argue that. Benn was just too young, too explosive, too hungry for him. I grew up in this era so don't have to do "research" . I saw the fight live and if De Witt was a shot fighter he certainly wouldn't have fought like that.
@@adamlees8410 He was shot. He retired after that fight for 2 years then tried to make a brief comeback that ended quickly. His chin is what kept him in it as long as he was and he was never that talented to begin with.
I would love to watch this with the original American commentary. Im a huge Benn fan and on RUclips you can find the US versions of the Barkley,MCCLLELAN fights but not this one?
I don't care how good a boxer u r, getting in a ring with Benn who hits harder n faster than 99% of all boxers who have lived is crazy, but brave! On top of that he's one mean street brawler! 😮
God iv only ever seen this once ? Minor capacity venue(Holds 4,000) and very, very quiet ? It's Tyson v Whyte at Wembley in 4 days time with 94,000 WOW..How things have changed....LEGEND Nigel Benn ..
Doug Dewitt was a great boxer with a great chin in his glory days. Nigel Benn was a heavy Hitter. I remember when Nigel knocked out Iran Barkley. Man Nigel had that power.
At 8.49 Nigel came bouncing off the Ropes& there was most def a Clash of Heads, but Doug had used that tactic many an time in previous fights,so he couldn't really complain!
DeWitt gt absolutely Mauled in R1! He didn't throw a single right hand! Big mistake! His corner was correct, he needed to throw his right to keep Benn off guard.😮
From Denmark, How could this nigel Ben get away without being drawn in points or being disqualified. i have seen several that nigel ben´s fights and he hits them when they are down on the floor. it was not good style, but he got away with it.
Benn was ppl hero in uk and so was allowed a bit of room as they say £££s or Danish krones speak louder than words or actions in this case best wishes uk England Newcastle upon Tyne
Dewitt was a lot tougher than he got credit for, taking them punches flush on the chin! by Mr Benn, surprised he dropped Nigel, as he wasn't a real puncher, more like a punch- bag who would absorb everything you threw at him, and get a stoppage once you had punched yourself out, credit to two hard men.
Looked like the was having a night off, dewitt was holding and spoiling every round and the useless waste of oxygen didn’t say a word, probably because of his corrupt bias
People forget Dewitt was completely shot by this point. He really wasn’t a great fighter, he was just a very good one. But to say he found his belt in a box of cornflakes, only speaks of your ignorance.

Yes, he's everything you want in a fighter, courage, limitless determination and the hammer of Thor. I wouldn't take him on if I had a shotgun.
Did you ever beat your shadow?

One the best 160/168 world boxing has ever seen 👌

Thanks mate great footage. Bring back childhood memories :).
Thanks for posting!

AWESOME.
Benn always turned up in top condition and gave his all a proper win lose or draw and he was still happy
Came to america to make a statement and took it to paridise
34:46 I remember this really well.
When I was watching it live I thought Benn was laughing!
It's hard to believe it was 34 years ago.
I know!! Where's the time gone eh?? Feels like yesterday.
Benn looks like the lead singer of The Pasadena’s here 😂
right on right on!
amazing 😅
👍 yup
Riding in a train!
Doug should get an award for taking the most potential knockout punches in the history of boxing!
Dewitt did not take more punches than Jerry Quarry.
@@keithcampbell6806 We're talking Doug in this fight alone. I'm surprised his head was still attached to his shoulders after this beating.

Nigel Ben had great stamina.
I had forgotten that Doug dropped him.
Doug Dewitt was a throwback. He fought Benn, Hearns, and Toney. That’s 3 that are in the hall of fame. Benn is a bit dirty. After the bell, come on.
... Jim Rosenthal, Bee n There And Done It. Top Bloke Indeedy... Greetings from Bradford West Yorkshire
With heads been busting up by BENN super punches
What a shellacking that was. Poor refereeing and corner. Geez. Dewitt would have been sore for a very long time.
Yeah outgunned not helped by the corner or ref wow
Nigel Benn…….nothing else needs to be said……just…….Nigel Benn🥊🥊🥊❤️

Doug DeWitt's nose tells a story all its own
Pure punches 👊🏾 to the 👃
Fought like Doug De Twit to me 😅

Crazy that the ref let him carry on after the first and even second knockdown. Just awful. The ref's job is to protect fighters from themselves.
Nigel never lost a fight to an American opponent, he even went to Italy and took the title off their man too.
Benn 158lb in the days of the fight day weigh in, he looks like a Light Middle here. 🙌
DeWitt gt absolutely Mauled in R1! He didn't throw a single right hand! Big mistake! His corner was correct, he needed to throw his right to keep Benn off guard.😮
Doug De Witt : Nigel Benn is in over his head here...😄😁😆😅😂🤣
After the first round he must have felt adrenaline too good cause he got blasted and cut in the first round
And the great Ray Leonard comes on and says why he isn't in over his head, Leonard got it spot on!
Doug was always just a club fighter, was good but not enough.I think like a lot of fighters he took a lot of beatings.
Doug has been hit so many times in the face his face is "Concave!"😮
Nigel by KO. What a surprise.
44:43 Oh what an ironic comment!!!! Be careful what you wish for, Nige!!!
If remember correctly Benn twisted his ankle, broke his wrist and still got the KO
Heck of a fighter
Nigel looking at the ring card girl 23:11 23:30 27:20
Michael Buffer just didn't sound right in a small venue!!
Best fight of Nigel benn best boxer ever
Mclellan definitely has to be

You don't have to be a big/real puncher to drop an opponent. It's ALL about precision and timing.
@@groovetraxxxgingerbreadman1282 I know, I started at 7years old.
Looks like its in a working mens club?! Zero glitz there
Ballys in Vegas if I remember right. Huge from outside but must have put the fight on in a spare room!
Didn't need the glitz back then, the fighters were such quality and marketable on their own.
Good old fooooking days 🙋
I’d forgotten Ambrose was black. I also forgot Arum was once not old. Still a bullshitter.
The late punches in this fight were just a taste of what was to come for Iran “The Blade” Barkley 😃
