What I noticed was you smiled all the time, so that shows how much you enjoyed it! It definitely looked peaceful and a good time out. I've done plenty kayaking but hardly any canoeing and it's been a while! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great trip. High marks for “most improved.” Your paddling got much quieter as you learned to move the shaft off the gunwales. And much calmer as you learned that in moving water it’s more about using the paddle as a rudder, and less about paddling. Nicely done. Very enjoyable. And your ever-present smile and humor capped it as usual. All the best.
It gets a lot easier, perhaps use the paddle as a rudder rather than putting strokes in or back paddling? The J stroke would be next on the list. You won't have to keep swapping sides then and can keep your trousers dry!
I was a coastal rower. Nowadays, me and one of my old crew get in his canoe and do the same thing... amazing how different the same places are from the water. Well done mate.
Years and years since I was either in a Canoe or Kayak. Good for you, trying something new and getting out of your comfort zone. Your humility and humour shine through.
Travel, water, air, earth, cooking and warming with banter by fire in relative isolation is a wonderful way to experience nature, and difficult combo to beat, nice1.
Yes, I worked with you when you were a lad, Sabre tools, Ranskill. Top lad.... Remember laughing with Phil, Andy and you...... Ray Bacon, Big Jeff.... John.... Barry.... Derek..... David.... Learning times... All the best to you and yours from North Nottinghamshire UK (Retford, Ranskill) 🙂
I really admire you perhaps coming out of your comfort zone a little, and showing us a different flavour of your content. That kind of honesty and tenacity is rare to see Paul, and it was really enjoyable to see you go through those challenges and come out the other side. Kudos to you.
Well, this video was certainly different. It looked like you were out of your comfort zone. However, you took it in your stride, and it looked like you enjoyed it. Well done. I loved every minute of it. Do we want to see more of these types of videos? HELL YES.👍👍👍
Love to see you happy and enjoying yourself Paul. You should try a closed kayak sometime also. You'd love the maneuverability of them. I'd love to see more water content. Thoroughly enjoyed 🫡
Top Job there Paul, you got the hang of it towards the end. It's one of my pleasures in life heading out on a canoe trip even if it's just a local paddle on the canals which is a tip I'd give you to do if you did purchase your own. Me and Charlie paddled them for a good while, getting used to how the boat moved and different strokes and such then moving on to Lakes on calm days. It just gets your confidence up and allows you to get used to the mechanics of canoeing. A lovely river to paddle down and a fab spot to rest those weary arms and back after the long day, great food on offer too. I enjoyed that 👍
Good morning my friend, thank you so much for creating and sharing this amazing experience with us. I truly needed this, as I feel stuck in my life right now and was a big adventure person in the past, but somehow I lost that. So coming across these helps a lot to push me back to the roots. Thank you and wishing you all the best on your journeys :)
Excellent, and not the easiest of rivers for a first paddle! Canoe/wildcamping is always my choice, but suitable overnight stops are very hard to find as you have to stay close to the water..... Look forward to more canoe trips; well done and thank you.
Many years ago I went on a 4 day canoe expedition on the Leeds Liverpool canal. Approx 20 miles per day. We camped each night. After the 1st day, my legs went to jelly, and I had to be carried out of the canoe. 😂
Well done Paul, that’s a great new activity for the channel. You need to get the hang of the J-stroke and it’s variations, makes life a lot simpler when your single handed. Keep them coming 👍
I really enjoyed this but nearly didn’t watch it as it was nearly an hour long. I tend not to watch things over 30 minutes. I’m so glad I did. I used to love canoeing and kayaking. This video brought back a load of happy memories. Your cook up looked delicious. Take care Gill
That is top notch Paul. Great to see you out and enjoying every minute, even the sketchy bits. I've never done any canoe camping but love the look of it. And nice to see the hammock out again but ... well ... use a top and underquilt instead of a sleeping pad and inflatable pad, and sleep diagonally. But you know all that. Brilliant vid and can't wait for the next installation.
Great vid Paul, you did brilliantly for a novice. And yeah canoe camping is a great way to see the world from another angle, there's so many hidden spots out there! Nice to see you up my way too. Will be paddling the Trent on my 16' canoe this week. Will be leaving the camp gear behind this time lol
When I saw the title and thumbnail I wondered if you had joined up with @simonablokeinthewoods whose channel I can thoroughly recommend. Great job Paul, even more so for the editing and not drowning everything with muzak.
See I like the look of packrafts as they're so light and packable, plus if you're really brave you can find DIY kits that essentially just iron/weld together
Blimey! I remember doing a bit of Canadian canoeing back in me Army days. I see they're still as hard to steer, lol! A great bunch of mates and brilliant vid. Thanks Paul.
Congratulations 🎉 on branching out! We kayak and love it. I loved hearing you giggle and laugh-that’s what it’s all about-having a great time with friends. And I love Tony and Bruce over at ABCamping.
Here in Norway, we grow up using canoes, either in fjords, rivers of lakes. That being said, I’m surprised how well you managed something like this on your first try - I would not consider this river “beginner level”.
Hats off to you Paul for a first time you did amazing, talk about a baptism of fire! You can tell you weren’t comfortable but you did it. Personally I prefer to kayak rather than canoe but just being out on the water is so peaceful….usually!
Wait till you have to cross a deep lake against the whitecaps and wind for about a kilometre. You won’t be complaining about being knackered by meandering down a lazy river with the current any more!!! But being a novice I guess you expended a bit more energy changing sides as much as you did. Can’t ride you too much! However it was an excellent video and Thankyou very much for letting us ride with you and your buds!!!
That was exciting! I've only paddled a kayak, I'd love to try canoeing. It deffinitely is a good way to go camping. I have my own kayak and I'd love to use it more. Waiting for the spring & summer when the lakes & sea are melt from ice.
Another great video Paul, it doesn’t get better than that. As a fellow gout sufferer I know how that can ruin your day, Marmite brings it on for me which is a shame because I love it.
Didnt look too bad tbh, just need to get that stroke down, nice long even strokes and then flip the paddle online with the canoe and use it like a rudder. Was also going to suggest kneeling as that can help a bit until you get used to it properly. Took me ages to get it right and haven't done it for years now, might look into it again tbh.
What a great video! Good to see you not afraid to try something different. Maybe a double edged paddle would make it easier for you. Bet you slept well when you got home! 😁🙋♀️
I would have thought they'd have taught you the J-stroke. I'd also imagine that the issue with your knees in the hammock is down to your set-up. A few mm here or there makes all the difference. The swans are a menace, I've been physically attacked a few times. Nice video, thanks for making the effort and sharing.
Well done, Paul! You look like a regular Mohawk Indian! Here in central Pennsylvania, USA my wife and I do a fair amount of kayaking. Used to have a canoe just like the one you used but she wanted to go right when I wanted to go left... so we traded in the canoe for 2 kayaks.
Canoe camping is the best! And you did good for it being your first time, especially with you being in a single canoe. I did laugh at the end when you talked about how tired you were, amazing how our bodies get used to certain activities. That looked like a nice easy paddle to me, but I'm pretty sure I'd die hiking up some of the hills you do!
I'd love more of this content, if only so you could show me some places I could do this that are easier to reach than Joe Robinets videos from all the way in Canada I haven't done proper canoeing since I was little and I think it's time I get back into it
Great video and thanks for sharing! I've been transitioning from tent to hammock and getting a longer hammock gets you a comfy flatter lie (the Dutchware 335cm works for my 183cm frame, but they also offer a 366cm hammock) Cheers!
Well done Paul .. Been there, done that as they say .. Those Canadian style canoes are soooo twitchy .. i never really got used to them so ended up buying sit on style kayaks .. it's great to be on the water seeing things you don't normally see from the land
Old Town is a town named by colonial settlers from Europe in these parts of the woods, in the USA as they call it. Long before the Canadian settlers from Europe built them, we American Indians built them this way for thousands of years.
Just started watching this latest vid. Can't wait, I love seeing begineers paddling. I did a few courses while I was inn the army and just love it. Definatly need to connvince the wife to let me spennd the money I need to one one.
What I noticed was you smiled all the time, so that shows how much you enjoyed it! It definitely looked peaceful and a good time out. I've done plenty kayaking but hardly any canoeing and it's been a while! Glad you enjoyed it!

Great vid paul, good to see something different. Felt like i was in the canoe myself when you were going head on and crashing into things
Yes, I worked with you when you were a lad, Sabre tools, Ranskill.

That was brilliant Paul. Rapids as well. That has bought a proper smile to my face today. Thank you.

Yes messner out and paddling got to be worth a watch 🚣😀
I did a canoe trip with my mate Stephan Natynczuck down the Avon. This brings back happy memories. Many thanks for this.
Love to see you happy and enjoying yourself Paul. You should try a closed kayak sometime also. You'd love the maneuverability of them. I'd love to see more water content. Thoroughly enjoyed 🫡
Really enjoyed this Paul! Thanks for stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Absolutely bloody brilliant! What an adventure, team effort and meal! Keep us going through Feb Paul!! 🔥🙏🍖🏕️

Looks like great fun 👍
Brilliant. I did something similar down the Wye and camped in Teepees. Well worth doing.
Excellent, and not the easiest of rivers for a first paddle! Canoe/wildcamping is always my choice, but suitable overnight stops are very hard to find as you have to stay close to the water.....
Look forward to more canoe trips; well done and thank you.
Very well done Paul. You’ve got to start at the beginning with something new! You did really well. Looking forward to seeing your next trip.
Paul thats what you call camping mate😉🏴you can’t beat a Cajun rub and Camembert.
That looked amazing. Thanks for sharing

Cracking video mate, very refreshing, nice to see something abit different 👍 👌
Fair play doing boat camp in January, I've done in summer, where wet feet not an issue, in winter the sealskin socks would be ideal.
"Merci beaucoup" for this great video. A great friendly moment 😊
I've had my fish tickling licence since I was a boy. You defo need one of these.
That is top notch Paul. Great to see you out and enjoying every minute, even the sketchy bits. I've never done any canoe camping but love the look of it. Welcome to my world. You did well for your first time. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing it with us.
Went through my home town 😁. 15 years since I lived there. Brings back memories fishing on that river. Awesome
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Paddle Camping!
Always love to see some canoe camping. Hope you make some more
Great departure from the norm. Well done Paul
When I saw the title and thumbnail I wondered if you had joined up with @simonablokeinthewoods whose channel I can thoroughly recommend. Great job Paul, even more so for the editing and not drowning everything with muzak.
Fantastic. Many more canoe adventures I'm certain. It is addictive. 🇨🇦
Happy new adventures 👌🏻. It’s great to try new things. I’ve just bought a new canoe picking it up in March. Can’t wait
Looked like a great trip is that your new found hobby👍👍
See I like the look of packrafts as they're so light and packable, plus if you're really brave you can find DIY kits that essentially just iron/weld together
Smiles all the way .
Great video! I think this is very special combination, paddling and camping... When you try it, it is hard not to repeat it 👍
Blimey! I remember doing a bit of Canadian canoeing back in me Army days. I see they're still as hard to steer, lol! A great bunch of mates and brilliant vid. Thanks Paul.

Looked great fun. Enjoyed the riverside views.
The UK has great wild camping rules and a system of canals to support this.
Here in Norway, we grow up using canoes, either in fjords, rivers of lakes. That being said, I’m surprised how well you managed something like this on your first try - I would not consider this river “beginner level”.
Great video Paul. I grew up about half a mile from where you started and spent a lot of my childhood playing in the river there.
Great video Paul. More Captain Pugwash than Admiral Nelson though.
Brilliant video 📹 for a Sunday afternoon 😀
Hi Paul and Jo, great video mate, we really enjoyed this. Looks like your natural at paddling mate. Cheers Glyn.
Please do more of this and in the spring/ summer you can get a canal licence !!
Hats off to you Paul for a first time you did amazing, talk about a baptism of fire! You can tell you weren’t comfortable but you did it. Personally I prefer to kayak rather than canoe but just being out on the water is so peaceful….usually!
You will so enjoy this.
Awesome video Paul. We did a few days in sea kayaks in Scotland and with a bit of practice gets much easier
That looks great fun :)
Welcome to the wet side of wild camping. We all float down here ;-)
This made me laugh 😂😂 "bloody ell" crash! 😂 "can't believe this doesn't come with an air bag" crash! 😂 Really enjoyed this video
lol, bloody tarp thief.... good camp mate. Tony
Loved that Paul. Wouldn't mind having a go myself.
That looked like a good solid fun trip. Cheers!
Nice board and camping
That was cool
I love the longer videos!
Great adventure Paul, nice one.😀😃
looked absoulutly sacred out of your mind paul on the water
Wait till you have to cross a deep lake against the whitecaps and wind for about a kilometre. Really loved this Paul.. Great video and great to see you having fun with something completely different. Cheers Mark 👍
Cheers mate. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Another great video Paul, it doesn’t get better than that. As a fellow gout sufferer I know how that can ruin your day, Marmite brings it on for me which is a shame because I love it.
Great video mate 😀
Really enjoyed the steak shots 😋
Was good to see you and catch up. Hopefully we’ve not put you off of canoeing for the future.
I’ll be back mate for sure. Loved it but gonna need to work on my technique. Thanks for all the help.
Didnt look too bad tbh, just need to get that stroke down, nice long even strokes and then flip the paddle online with the canoe and use it like a rudder.
Was also going to suggest kneeling as that can help a bit until you get used to it properly.

That looked Fun!!
What a great video! Good to see you not afraid to try something different. Maybe a double edged paddle would make it easier for you. Bet you slept well when you got home! 😁🙋♀️
Awesome for trying something new mate. I suspect the start of many more water borne adventures!!! Nothing like the canoe for travel.
When you said you had to hit the second arch I presumed you were going to glide throught the middle! Bang!!! Great video though. Cheers
I would have thought they'd have taught you the J-stroke. I'd also imagine that the issue with your knees in the hammock is down to your set-up. A few mm here or there makes all the difference. The swans are a menace, I've been physically attacked a few times. Nice video, thanks for making the effort and sharing.
You should do a canoe camp with Simon, a bloke in the woods and Kent Survival!!!!
Holy shit, 160k subs. Nice. I think I was among your first couple thousand 😁
Really enjoyed your adventure into river camping
you did really well ,for your first time ,
Thank you.

I haven't done proper canoeing since I was little and I think it's time I get back into it
Great experience there Paul and enjoyed it with you.
Smashing vid Paul. a bit unusual for you to use a hammock and it shows you're not too happy in the canoe. anyhow, loved it thanks.
Great video and thanks for sharing! I've been transitioning from tent to hammock and getting a longer hammock gets you a comfy flatter lie (the Dutchware 335cm works for my 183cm frame, but they also offer a 366cm hammock) Cheers!
This is something I want to try with a kayak. We've got lovely River systems down here in South Africa.
Great vid, Paul. It was fun watching.
The Breede is on. Y bucket list too.
Have you ever watched the 1972 film 'Deliverance', if not, give it a try! 🤣 Thanks as always, great vid.🤩
Paul if that’s your first time in a canoe you did very well ,, trouble is it’s addictive
Nine minutes in and i'm yearning for Deliverance sorry Paul 😆😆😆
Paul your the real deal...come to Las Vegas nv... desert camping is great..god bless brother
Maybe one day! 💰💰💰thank you
Kayak camping is the best form of camping! I mean I am slightly biased though
Howdo Paul - that we're alright 👍 you got passed your nerves and got in a stride. Well done.
Just started watching this latest vid. Can't wait, I love seeing begineers paddling. I did a few courses while I was inn the army and just love it. Definatly need to connvince the wife to let me spennd the money I need to one one.
Whats goinnnng onn with my nnnnnn's
