I've done that trip bicycle touring and got buzzed by friendly keas in the valley east of the tunnel (looks like they hang around the tunnel entrances for food from queueing tourists), I was pleased to see the "no drones" sign in that area. At the time the tunnel was unlit and roofing iron was suspended at the places where water was coming in. Going uphill through it in the morning there was a strong updraft because of the warmer air on the coastal side. The wind through the roofing iron sounded like a distant man screaming.
