Cape York's Forgotten Track - Roothy

SOMETIMES you get a chance to try a track that nobody's driven in years. This was one of those times. It involved putting a lot of balls on the line but was it worth it? You bet!
Yep, this trek to the Old Lockart Mission ticked every possible box as far as hard core adventuring goes.
The first fifty or so kilometres were still regularly driven but even one of the local coppers - a four wheel drive nut - had told us that once you got to ‘that creek’, it was a total unknown beyond. Nobody had passed over ‘that creek’ for years. In fact nobody had accessed the old mission site via road for years. A few people used boats to run down the coast for fishing holidays apparently but we couldn’t even find anyone to talk about that!
I know why they didn’t cross that creek and so will you when you’ve seen the DVD. The creek itself wasn’t so bad but years of roaring wet season floods had carved a huge hole in the bank on the other side which was just a sump of rotten leaves and slush. From the New Lockhart side you could see a couple of big trees had dropped across the track too. And what you couldn’t see was what happened after that because the whole lot looked overgrown with bamboo anyway.
Add in the obvious signs of crocodiles and the fact that our locals had described this are of low lying creeks and wet season pools as ‘infested’ and we had ourselves a real doozy of a situation. No wonder nobody had bothered trying this!
It was hard enough just seeking permission to go through tribal lands. We found three people who were considered Traditional Owners. Two said yes, the third said no. But the third bloke talked himself around in circles by noting it was a gazetted road and he couldn’t stop us. He’d just rather we didn’t.
He was out voted two to one and both the other two and the local policeman suggested he might have ‘other reasons’ for not wanting people traversing that land.
OK, this is where another facet of real life in the northern part of Australia comes in to play. Lockhart is a dry zone, like Doomadgee and a whole lot of Aboriginal communities that have a history of being ripped apart by grog. But put a whole lot of frustrated people in one spot, take away the booze that was their only escape, and it’s only a matter of time before someone rolls a splif. More than once I’ve seen the signs of illicit crops and of course Aboriginal land where access is restricted is absolutely perfect. The other sign is the lack of interest in the faces of some of the people in these communities. Bob Marley is popular for a whole lot of reasons…

Episodes like this were the best this genre of off-road adventures ever made. Absolutely superb. A trip like this really is the ultimate dream.
This is definitely one of the more memorable episodes from 4WD Action back in the day. Such an epic challenge. Happy to be able to watch it again!
Gee thanks Dan - when are we heading north to do it with the Mah???
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY mate I'll happily bring my old Prado to do this trip with You and the Mahindra.. the sense of adventure is through the roof and the amount of friends willing to do it with me is zero!
Man this really brings back the good old days .
R.I.P Steve, gone but always remembered
When did he pass?
@@robbillington2908 a few years ago
how did he pass?

I always love watching a classic, i miss that little green truck.
Quite sad when Steve says he was glad to be on the trip. The music aswell during the scene.
RIP Stevo, I’m having a drink on his behalf.
They don't make them like Milo anymore ...or Roothy 😉
Thanks for posting these brilliant memories mate, I'm loving them!
Yes sir, that is off-roading. Happy to see that you left the track better than what you found it. Happy to see respect for the machine.
I have this on DVD when it came out with a magazine at my local newsagency when I was a kid!
One of my favourite episodes
Thanks Roothy, what adventure is all about. The struggles, mateship, history
Oh my roothy that first creek crossing and clearing the track and milo took me back to the days of Malcolm Douglas , Alby mangles and all the other legends back of the time. The old camel trophy and all those good things. Champion vid and thanx for the memories 🤙
exactly not paid promotion and beer sponsorships. Everything that is nice and honorable money slips in and just destroys
@@mikeykeyes bloody oath
Awsome episode Roothy probably one of the best for sure. The top end is definitely one of the most rewarding. 🇦🇺🤠👍👍👍👍👍
Mate this is a top episode. I’ve remembered and used many times the winch and snatch strap setup to just jump forward 6 inches at a time . Loading up the snatch strap for a slingshot effect works brilliantly... Thanks Cobba 👍
great video and when 4x4 shows we're more fun to watch...miss these old series with Roothy
Miss this version of 4wdAction/247, now they are the full send it mob, ads and same jokes each episode
True, that & their drunk cooking segments are almost painful to endure.
Les Hiddens Bush Tucker Man is also a good older series to watch, no nonsense, informative & no stupid rock music.
@@TASMAN-1 cooking segments became too embarrassing and shitty..
I'm new to this channel, but I follow the 24/7 one with Shawno and the lot. Is this connected to them ? Cause it seems to say 4wd Action like they used to.
@@nikoherkules it's the same show but roothy (in this video) was the old host of the show, this is an old video. but now Shaun and Graham are the new hosts of the show. Hope this helps
Yeah I've been seeing that
That’s one of the toughest track I have seen Thanks Roothy
WOW!
That's what 4wding is about.
Amazing share Roothy 👏👏👏👏
Always a pleasure to watch you in your element mate!
This is what real adventure looks like...
This made my day a lot better, realy good stuff and a true adventure.
One of the best episodes I have watched. Thank you Roothy for sharing this experience with us. Best regards from the Philippines 🇵🇭, mate!👍👌👊
BEST episode, EPIC music, ROOTHY’s laughter. Can’t get better.
Absolute ripper of an episode just got my first 4wd (fj 62) cant wait to get out exploring like you guys 👍🏻👍🏻
This is a top little expedition off the main Cape York road. I remember doing this exact track in the early 2000's after gaining permission from the elders. We had 5 vehicles in our convoy. All double locked and with warn winches. A landrover defender 130 cut back to 100, Nissan GQ patrol turbo petrol, Toyota 60 series factory turbo diesel, Toyota 80 series turbo petrol and a diesel leaf sprung hilux. It was all in a bit better condition back then. We followed the track past the old homestead for another 3 days ending up back in Coen. Brings back memories and the mate ship that comes from alot of winching and track clearing. Well done Roothy!
What an epic trip / video , absolutely awesome guys thanks for sharing that adventure 👍🍻
What an adventure. Awesome viewing. Love it.
Admire your survival instinct when things get tough old mate👍
Great to watch them old episodes
That was the greatest adventure ever...I don't need to watch any more videos for a month

Thanks for the memories John
Yey Roothy!!! That was a beaut episode. Miss your voice, your way of presenting, and can't wait to meet you one day. cheers bro.
There’s nothing ‘balanced’ about anything you cook Roothy! Fantastic. Next year we hit the Cape after 20 yrs since doing it in a shorty 40, looking forward to it even more since watching that. Watching this from an $80 room at Pardoo roadhouse WA......12 weeks of work so headed up the road and am kickin back watchin the roadhouse world go by for a few days. So many great people on the road. I hope there’s plenty more trips in the pipeline for ya Roothy.
Hi just saw your two adventures back to back. I am very selective of what to watch. Loved your fun filled adventure and most important your sponatenous guidance is just a wow. I am wrting from Pakistan as we fast in this month of Ramadhan and after offering our prayers watching your 4x4 adventures lets the time passby. Thanks

Amazing trip gentlemen
Good watch! Remind me of my days in the bundoks of cordillera.
what a trip? vow!!
You guys need to take leaf out of the Les Hiddens book of survival. All you need is a Land Rover, a sound knowledge of bush tucker and a charter helicopter 😂 - enjoyed the vid - well done 👍
Bloody Awesome 👌
Good to hear from roothy
Lovin' it John.
Great video mate.
Roothy 100% OG love your work mate ....Rip Steve
what happened to Steve? Definitely not old age.
Bloody awesome!

I think the psycho dog might drive me a bit crazy.

All those mozzies got me itching.

Looks like a working holiday, but that trip is not for me ! Nice to watch
Awesome!
Hey Roothy great times, reckon Steve is up there having a good laugh as well, happy Easter cheers Craig
I would have my trusty rusty .303 ready!
Place like that mission a done would come in really handy 👍🏻
Drone? I think this was filmed before drones were a thing.
I love the safety boots.
Hello Roothy;
What are you up these days. ?
Have not heard anything from you for ages.
We miss you mate.
Warren.
Brilliant
This had a vibe like that movie - Wrong Turn...
Is old Millo still going I love that truck
Awesome
Cheers
One of the best 4x4 videos ever. Fair dimkum.
If you watch bush tucker mans north qld coast episode he visits here when there's a bit more left.
Great video this one is. So much better and realistic than 4wd 24-7. Approximately what year was this filmed in?
Ngl but I think this came out like before 2012 pretty sure ay. from what I remember when the DVD came out. But can’t exactly remember.
Giddaayyy John..hawwaayyaa?
Hows life down undaa ?
Cheers mate 🤗
If that dog makes it back ill be amazed.
Poor dog he was the bait
Noticed a fair puff of white smoke out of old milo each time it’s left idling and then you give her a gut full..what was making her do that roothy? Obviously before the rebuild?
No one forgets ADF blowing up a downed intact WW2 fighter back in the day .... like amateurs pissed allot of people off.
Nice
I'm waiting for mahindra thar to arrive in Australia. One of my favorite..
Having to chatter on a UHF the whole time would make me want to drive off a cliff!
Looked like hard work but worth it
Hey it’s jack I hope he’s doing good in dogo heaven
May I suggest a set of Maxxtrax also 8-))
Interesting fact: Bamboo is the world’s largest species of grass!😁
Interesting fact #2: Banana tree is the largest grass in the world.
Say, Roothy.
When you travelled with Jack back in the day, did you find it difficult to find places to bring him or were the rules about dogs a lot more lenient than they are today?
To be honest I told more than one ranger he was half a dingo - which he was - and therefore was indigenous. Being surrounded by cameras meant no dramas but I was cheeky and lucky. When a dog's as well behaved and attached to his truck like Jack I see no reason at all not to take him anywhere. NP policy to pets is just sheer laziness, couple of wild dogs and ban the lot - a bit like what they do to us...
Rip steve
So Roothy, what happened to motorcycle trader magazine, did that bite the dust.
You wonder how people got to remote places like that those days with no 4WD or a chainsaw!
Miss ya episodes it’s not the same
I like all about LC,but i don't have much money tu buy it😂😂😂
blankets will do sweet fuck all if that cable decides to go ping the crocs are half your worry
True if it's cable, but they were using rope, not cable.. the energy dissipation in the rope is so different.. I've watched the ropes snap a zillion times.. in saying that, rope might be 'safer' when it snaps, but i have yet to see a 4wd winch break a steel cable even with some damage on the cable and enormous forces.. so i would rather trust a cable in really remote places and just get the hell out of the way of anywhere it might go and don't be stupid. For people who are clueless and stand in dumb places i would recommend rope though.
why can't you have a beer to celebrate
Go JDog and the pack
I reckon that was a pig bog hole
"You never doubt the Mahindra" 🇮🇳♥️🙏🏽

RIP Australian made more likely with these episodes
Toyotas, not land rover nor jeep wrangler territory. Goodonchamate.
Jack the bait mate. We all know, that y people dogs with them
Not so much bait, you'd be surprised how effective dogs are at warning people of potential danger, if Jacko thought there was a croc hanging around he'd have gone off and alerted everyone well in advance
@@aarondavis673 It well known if someone fall off a boat up there. They through the dog in the water.
