"I'll die for my cause what will you sacrifice for yours?"
She said to the man who commited mass genocide of his own race for his cause
That's why he smiled
She probably never realized how close she got to being vaporized there :P.
If she'd had sense then to listen to his words, to slow down and contemplate, she would've then..
Yep, his retort to her was so good that he didn't even need to say it.
lol
"Because I'm the last of my species, and I know how that sits in a heart. So don't insult me"
Duncan Swift that scene made me accept Matt Smith as the doctor. That anger and sadness in his eyes are so deep
I love that little crack in his persona, all charm and warmth and then that edge in his voice.
I really love that moment
In a heart because he has two
Under the personality of his current regeneration is always the same doctor. 'Bad doctors' are only the ones that fail at that duality.
"I will gladly die for my cause! What will you sacrifice for yours?" Just the look of shame and regret on Matt's face... The things he's sacrificed.....
The unspoken answer: "I will sacrifice you and all your race"
@@ChucklesMcbastard That was what I was thinking as I read though the comments.
He looks like a father dealing with an unruly child. It's heartbreaking.
Oscars winning scene
**The Doctor
He's the only person who could have called her bluff on being the last of her species. He still remained kind and respectful through the whole thing.
Love that aspect of the Doctor
the fury of a time lord is a thing that even Gods fear
"what will you sacrifice for yours..." dread the answer Alaya... dread it.
i love how she reacts when the doctor compliments her looks because ridding her species of thier mask is a big no, but the surprise on her face i love it because she wasnt expecting his reaction to her ...sad but powerful
It's like she also doesn't want to take a compliment from an enemy, but at the same time she's flattered that that was his first response.
Most characters would be repulsed. But the Doctor is always more intrigued by alien life. Even if that got him in trouble with the Midnight Entity.
@@zionleach3001 The actress his beautiful herself, so id have a hard time buying anyone going "EW GROSS!"
"I'll gladly die for my cause. What will you sacrifice for yours?"
The look on the Doctor's face... You can just see he's thinking of the Time War. How he sacrificed his own people to save everyone else. He sacrificed his own name, his own morals, his own title... There is grief and pain in that brief smile.
God, Matt, how the hell can you look like the oldest doctor when you're the youngest actor to play him?!?!
Acting!
@@davincent98 He (Matt Smith) was very good about switching emotions rather quickly, he made his statement "I know how it sits in a heart, so don't insult me." with the last bit coming off at minimum irritated or at least a tad bit angry. To in the span of a minute the look of sadness and pain without saying a word. This is the mark of a good actor/actress.
this scene has so much in it from the doctor, from both matts performace and the writing, there is so much, anger, pain, sadness, that darker shade of the character sitting just belowe the surface, breifly showing itself. there is not a single scene that chibnall or 13 have managed in seasons 11 and 12 that comes remotly close to this
@@inputdolphin7183 exactly. I've tried to sit through episodes, and while the characters can sometimes be likable, and I do love Jodie Whittaker (i hope I'm spelling that right), I got so bored I couldn't really sit straight through a lot of it. The writing is cringe-y (though I understand Doctor Who writing can be cringe-y sometimes in general), the plot seems like a bullet point list rather than a sequence of events, and the 13th doctor is as inconsistent as my mental health. Anyways, you've probably heard the same critiques from other whovians. I absolutely detest the latest seasons of Doctor Who, and I just hope Chibnall has a quick exit.
But he didn't sacrifice them.
I just realized that this story takes place in 2020 but the Doctor believes the population of Earth to be at 6 billion.
think he means those that'd fight excluding kids and such
Could take place at the end of the year once covids taken its toll
Makes sense now
About a billion less then currently in 2020... And there is a global pandemic going on. Hmmmmmmmmmm...
Remember, there were several alien invasions that killed a lot of people between 2005 and 2020 in the Doctor Whoniverse
Though a bit abrasive, I've always found the Silurians quite a lovely species.
Agreed
They can't help being abrasive! Scales are a racial trait!
I like how 'alien' they are, with regards to breathing, and crying (as one did in the episode after). I think Chibnall has his moments, more when creating non-villain antagonists it seems.
I, too, want to intercourse the lizard-female.
They've always been my favorite race!
2:03 this line is incredible. Matt Smith’s delivery of it is phenomenal. there is so much calm rage there, anger beyond comprehension. the darkness hiding in the doctor’s heart and here he just begins to let it show before hiding again behind excessive hand movements and quick talking.
"What have you sacrificed for yours?!"
Would've loved the doctor to turn and go "I am the last of my species."
Chibi Ninja Gaming The look he gives instead conveys the same point but way better
I was hoping for “My entire species/race”
It's a look that says "more than you could possibly imagine. I hope you never can."
"You never asked me how I became the last of my species." Then walk out the door :)
If I would have answerd, I would have went to the door and said:,, To my people, before they went extinct, I was known as The Storm Of Armageden, The Walking Apocalypse, The End Of All Times, The Burner Of The World. Trust me, sometimes it is painful to give up things to your couse. Just make shure that you don't make a hole that can't heal. "
3:57. I look at that face and I can tell he's thinking "If you only knew..."
0:08 This is why I love Rory; at this point he barely knows the Doctor (and even had some bad feelings towards him) and yet he's concerned for his safety. I'm not sure if it's because he knows Amy cares for the Doctor or he already considers him a friend, but it shows his benevolent nature.
I mean... the Doctor is also Rory's ride home. I wouldnt want my ride to be killed.
Amy is a slag anyways

One of my absolute favorite scenes from Doctor Who. "You're really not. Because I'm the last of my species and I know how it sits in a heart. So don't insult me!"
*"Do we have to say vermin? They're really very nice."* 😂
What's wrong with vermin? Some of me best friends are vermin...
@@mstrfool sounds like a skaven apologist to me
as much as I love Peter and Clara I will never stop missing Matt, Karen and Arthur.
I love how you refered to everyone but Jenna by their names.
"There will be no battle here today"
Was it just me, or did that line and how Matt delivered it send chills of the Classic Era Doctors with that simple stern abrasive authority? Bloody brilliant!
Rewatching this now, I realize just how good Matt Smith was as the 11th doctor. It's like he channels all of past incarnations as one being. He has the curiosity of the 1st, the high energy of the 2nd, the calmness of the 3rd, and the sillyness of the 4th. Etc. Matt was truly amazing and I miss him greatly.
Plus, the 11th Doctor believed he was on his final life. So I think that's why the put like multiple personalities of different Doctors into 11
Think of it like a painting:
The First Doctor is all the available Colors and each Color respests a different face and personality, The 11th Doctor is the finished painting. The first doctor was the source that all others are based off and the 11th was his final face so he was combining of all.
Patrick Troughton is Matt Smith's favourite Doctor.
"Because I'm the last of my species, and I know how that sits in a heart. So don't insult me"
You tell that when he says that, she realizes that she isn't talking with a human right now, and that what he is saying is true. She realizes that it won't work so she stops lying. Just the acting overall from the both of them, the emotions, the inflections, everything, all top notch.
It's impressive how his voice hardly changes but that "So don't insult me" is very obviously a command, and one she better not ignore. And she knows it too.
"I'd gladly die for my cause, what would you sacrifice for yours?"
Ahhh, my dear girl if only you knew what he HAD already sacrificed for his beliefs
This two parter was the story that really nailed Matt Smith's doctor, he seems so child-like yet incredibly wise throughout it
I love when she stands, and the camera moves in such a way that he matches her in the foreground. But when next you get a full shot of him, he's still sitting down. So subtle in the moment... From the camera's/audience perspective it aids in highlighting the scene's psychology, because *of course* the Doctor doesn't need to be standing to maintain control of the situation. I adore the cinematography here.
Matt Smith is My Doctor. Peter is Fab, but Matt, you could see the rage underneath thesurface, in his eyes, I don't know why, but he is the older of the Doctors, in his eyes, you see all the hurt that he's gone through in the Time War.
so did David Tennant
And Christopher Eccleston.
+HippyAngel001 Peter Davison or Capaldi?
+Matthew Pacey Capadi. (Sorry it took me so long to reply to you.)
Pheebs *Capaldi.
In my opinion Matt Smith was at his best in his first series and very different from his final 2. Watching this scene again reminds me of how much I preferred him in series 5. I still love all of his performances as the Eleventh Doctor though.
Mitchell Radford Same here, much prefer series 5 than 6 and 7. His outfit was better too.
Same, I liked his more playful performance, later on he gets more dark, like he’s almost not even the same person anymore.
What season and episode is this
@@Kittycat_407 It's a two part story called The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood in series 5.
The writing was strongest in his first season, they gave him something he was really able to sink his teeth into. The later seasons the writing was a bit of a mess and his performance suffered because of it.
I actually quite like this episode. It's not perfect, but I thought it was interesting.
But the one thing that drives me crazy is the continued use of the term "Homo Reptilia." That is not what that taxonomic prefix means. "Homo" refers to the genus that all human species belong to, like Homo Sapiens (us), Homo Neanderthalensis, Homo Habilius, Homo Floresiensis, etc. Using that term suggests the Silurians, who are reptiles, are somehow related to humans, who are mammals. It's the "sapiens" part of the name that distinguishes them as being intelligent. Reptilia Sapiens would be a more accurate term.
Any biologists and/or paleontologists watching this know what I'm talking about.
At some point, they have been referred to as Reptilia Sapiens, though I cannot remember which story
Yeah I quite liked this episode too, it reminded me of the episodes from the RTD era
Mister Bubbles actually adding Sapiens to the end would make it even more incorrect. In modern taxonomy a species has two parts to its name, the first part as you pointed out is the genus name that refers to a group of closely related organisms (so “Homo” meaning man for the group that contains our species and our closest relatives like Neanderthals). The second part of the name is the species name and is unique to every species (so for us it’s Sapiens meaning wise), since our species already has Sapiens as our species name the Silurians can’t be classified as such as they are not the same species
I'm a physicist and it irked me as well. Just basic high school biology.
@@endless_ocean7987 You say that, but actually if the genus name is different, species can have the same species name. For example, Cannabis indica and Mangifera indica. If it was Homo reptilia sapiens, then yes it wouldn't make sense. However, Reptilia sapiens would work.
"I will die for my cause; what will you sacrifice for yours!?" That sad, little smile there at the end was all it took to say: "I've already sacrificed everything... So many times..." Brilliant acting.
The first appearance of the Silurians since Pertwee's run in the early 70's. Always love a good comeback of an alien species :)
I read the title as "the hungry doctor"

+The Ponderer I know a lot of people didn't like the design of the new Silurians because they looked too human compared to the ones from Classic Who. Other than that I'm not sure why this story was is so unpopular.

"I'll gladly die for my cause what will you sacrifice for yours?"
"Something I'm not very glad about."
"Ill gladly die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours?"
I love how the Doctor could've said something back, but his expression is of someone too exhausted and disillusioned to bother. In his eyes he's saying "If only you knew what that truly meant..."

me too. same.
The problem with doing a Silurian/sea devil episode is that you end with a pretty similar story every time
They could do one with a Silurian colony off world.
I think that's why they've only really done one modern one, because at least a lot of the people watching it now hadn't seen the past stories so they just update it.
This is Matt's best scene as The Doctor, for sure. The calm, the curiosity, and the fire, ice, and rage hidden just beneath the surface. The peace, and the pain.
It's akin to Capaldi's speech in 'The Zygon Inversion', but much more subtle (the stakes were higher in the former though).
Sorry but I thought the zygon inversion speech was tripe. Not Capaldi's fault though-- blame it on the writers
@@marksmith3947
No worries. I don't love the writing of _every_ single second.
“I’ll die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours?” The entire Silurian race - The doctor
I love how at 2:48 and in a bunch of other episodes the Doctor defends Humans
The fact when she asked what he sacrificed, and he said nothing...shows he understands what he's done, and his silence alone can let a whole room know it too and I love it so much
That one moment when she asks what he will sacrifice for his cause. He played that moment well because it shows the pain of what he sacrificed in the past during the time war as a previous regeneration.
"I do hate to monologue"
Seems like that changed with Capaldi, judging by Heaven Sent
I've been re-watching all of Matt's episodes this past week (whilst eating fish custard - of course) and it's made me feel so many emotions! I miss him so much! He was such an amazing Doctor and made it really easy to believe he was an alien with his weird love of bowties (which are still cool) and fezzes (also still cool) and the way you knew he admired the human race. Matt is an incredible actor and I love him to bits. 💙
bowtiedbenedict weird love for bowties what you talking about there cool even before matt!
In many ways, this is like the Midnight episode. Shows how scary humans can be when they’re scared. Thing is, this time the Doctor has companions
Considering that this story takes place in 2020, it's a good thing that Doc didn't mention anything about the pandemic to Amy and Rory.

This shows the genius of Matt as the Doctor... amazing acting
I love that he's deliberately speaking slowly and exactly for most of the time, because he's a little angry, but he still doesn't want to scare her☺
I rewatch the 11th Doctor whole series and the movies. Watching it now feels really Sad. Because of his face, his Goddamn beautiful face, you see the expression of pain and sadness and the memories of that sad past
God Matt was such a good Doctor. He was the only on who could make bow ties cool 😂
The 2nd Doctor wants a word with you
That face the doctor makes after she asks him what would he sacrifice for his cause, its so.. MMFH! No words needed, just the expression itself speaks of a thousand words there. Perfection.
"so dont insult me!" gives me the chills, its soo good.
"I'll gladly die for my species. What will you sacrifice for yours?"
I love the Doctor's little smile here because he could go off on one or monologue at her, but he doesn't. He knows that the response of "my entire species" isn't something you can explain in a few minutes and it's a day he tries to forget. Reminding himself of all the pain and suffering and loss he goes through day after day just for a woman who won't take any of it to heart is worthless. It's just a smile of "you have no idea."
I actually think this scene is what finallly made me like the Eleventh Doctor. Great performance by Mr. Smith.
“I’ll gladly die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours”
I’ll live for mine
Dalek: "INCORRECT! YOU ARE NOT THE LAST OF YOUR SPECIES SILURIAN!"
The Doctor is really a lesson to us all. A case study in ethics and morality.
A very good scene in an altogether bad episode is my verdict.
Despite that Matt's performance is, as always, gorgeous. I'll admit it took me a while to warm to him, I was just starting to like him here and it took me until The Big Bang to fall head-over-heels in love with him. Rewatching Series 5, this time without being blinded by Tennant nostalgia, has really helped to appreciate just how GOOD he was. I still miss him and he's shot to the top of my list as favourite Doctor.
Watched this episode yesterday...
Matt Smith was a very good Doctor.
I liked when he was all serious and dark
I love when the theme plays. It's the "mess around and find out" theme.
"What have you sacrificed for yours?" If only she knew how many times he sacrificed something for his cause.
Matt Smith, my favourite Doctor
Luke same
I know everyone’s gushing about the Doctor and his traumas. But I love how the writers find a way to explain continuity gaps in designs. New Doctor? He regenerated. Silurians and Daleks look funny? Upgrades and different evolutionary branch. Cyber men are even more different? Upgrades people! Upgrades!
I always forget just how much I enjoy Series 5 and 6 until I revisit them. They really were Matt Smith in his prime as the Doctor.
"I've come to talk. I'm going to remove your mask"

I hope a a quad of good old Pertwee silurians find vast a and butcher her so we can have good old silurians... Maybe the sontaran scan kill that stupid abomination of the show - strax.

3:57 the look on his face says enough
I have a friend who really didn't like Matt Smith playing the Doctor but I just watch a scene like this and I don't know why. I think his performance is great and he is able to channel so much into just his body and face. I took me a few episodes to warm up to Peter as the Doctor but by the end of the 11th Hour I totally brought Smith in the role.
I love how his grief was expressed through his silence. The Man who forgets doesn't even want to remember his sacrifices.
So I'm watching this and the date of this was to be set in 2020 and we just got to 2020
"I will die for my cause" Possible line: I've wiped out species just for a planet
i think this is one of the few rare times the villain of the episode was not who or what everyone thought it was.
I quite liked him as the doctor. Usually very calm makes him look like he is in control of the situation
that look he gives after she says "i'll gladly die for my cause, what will you sacrifice for yours." Not only has the Doctor caused many people to die for him, but he's also sacrificed so much more than she ever has or ever will. quite sad.
You know we're getting old because when this episode aired it was set 10 years in the future in 2020, but now it's in the past
I always thought the "last of my species" thing was a bit stupid. I mean... She came up to the surface with two others, so she obviously wasn't alone...
The Doctor also thought it was stupid.
Well, like the Doctor said, it was an interrogation defence, likely one instilled in her as the first form of defence against “enemy aliens”. And there’s a chance she believed the Doctor hadn’t seen the other two. Still a _bit_ stupid, yes, but hardly idiotic if that makes sense
Anyone else think when he called.her beautiful that she had a visible look of shock and confusion mixed with a rad bit of flusteredness (I know that's not a word but work with me here)
The way he said “So don’t insult me.” You could feel the anger rising.
And the look on his face as she ask what will he sacrifice. You could tell he viewed her as nothing more than a child.
When the Doctor brokered a peace between Humanity and the Zygons in the 50th Anniversary we had a follow-up two-parter in Season 9 that continued that story. Now in this Silurian two-parter, it ends with them going back to sleep for 1000 years because they world isn't ready to share both species. Considering these episodes were written by Chris Chibnall, do we reckon we'll get follow-up episodes when he takes over as showrunner?
I like matt smith
Phenomenal acting on Matt's behalf here.
"I think I've met these creatures before! Different branch of the species, they weren't quite as hot."
I do love the 11th Doctor. When Alaya asks "what will you do for your cause?" He just does that sad little smile because that's the point. He's the Doctor. He has no cause, he only has one real enemy (the Daleks). He sees the bigger picture and the affects of all actions. He has no side in this "war" because all he wants is the people back and peace between the humans and the Silurians. He's not directly involved because he is from neither species, but because he asks for the humans, the Silurians automatically put him on the opposing side. As he says in series 7 he "walked away from the last Great Time War". This is a squabble to him, in one lonely corner of a small country on a small planet.
He has no side. He just wants peace because he's seen (and done) mass destruction and mass hate. What hurts him is when he has to make horrific decisions so peace will prevail (for example, 10 in "The Fires of Pompeii"). That's what the smile is.
He also was the last of his species cause he killed them all, and at this point, the day of the doctor hasn't happened yet so eleven doesn't know what actually happened.
That Silurian looked, and sounded, almost exactly like Madam Vastra.

It is her that’s why she helps the dr
@@Jackgames-vg7cw Same actress, different Silurian.
I wish Matt could still be the doctor
It’s not when he’s screaming and yelling you shouldn’t be worried.
It’s when his voice is calm and steady.
*THATS* when you should be worried.
When ever you meet the doctor it's best to just do what he says.
"I sacrificed my people for mine, and the enemy still escaped..."
That twitch...he sacrificed his planet.
I have to write an essay on Silurian period and here I am for the reference. I leave no excuse to watch any clip of Dr. Who.
Do love the fact the head resembles "SLIGHTLY" (before I get attacked by offended Doctor who fans) of a turian from mass effect
That last attempted jab where the doctor just smirks back and thinks "I sacrificed my species and my homeworld, your life means absolutely nothing compared to that"
She turned out to be such a great character, I loved her reappearances. Or just a great actress, not sure which.
I love episodes like this one. These stories make it very clear how much of the universe isn't black and white, but rather, shades of gray.
The Silurians were my favourite addition to New!Who in 11’s era of television. Exotic and beautiful, with an interesting society and a cool connection to humanity and Earth beyond just ‘we want to do bad things to nice humans’.
