Of all the jazzy/spacey Dark Stars from 73' and 74', this version might just be the most coherent and masterfully orchestrated one of them all. It drips but doesn't meander. It goes OUT there but never gets lost. It is smooth. It is waxy. It is ethereal. It is just..exactly... perfect.
This classic, epitome masterpiece iteration was in circulation among show traders in 1990’s...Deadheads marveled then (as I still do today, listening here) at the fresh soundboard crisp, rich tones- bass is rich round & deep...Billy’s drums are mic’d ideally...Keith’s piano presents the nuanced, inspired take on this classic - imo one of the best post-TC keyboard on DS ever! You can actually hear Bobby the whole time (snicker) & he’s in fine form...& Jerry...Jerry...yeah, his titanic work here covers a landscape that most can see clearly as they listen... Garcia is on fire with inspiration...effortlessly shuffling styles & tones... amazing stuff. Amazing.
A teacher of mine in high school surprised me with this song on a cd the day after he found me doodling a stealy in his class. It wasnt long before this song became a surefire vehicle to tranquility for me. It's a masterpiece
I had a Spanish teacher who would randomly tell the class his Grateful Dead experiences. I can't remember if they coincided with tour coming through. Had several classmates that were Deadheads to varying degrees but the one friend of theirs not in the class played a huge role in me moving from fan to head. There were several friends over the years and miles that helped that along and am so grateful. My Punk, Metal, Crossover of the 2 was just fueling a darkness of anger and shitstorm. The music, friends, scene, and psychedelics combined with a sprout of my spiritual beliefs all helped me along the way. I'll never forget that teacher and others who were into the scene or the ones who were painters, writers, and even an old half insane poet of a teacher. Whole new world had opened. The people who surprise us with a hidden alternate life of Deadhead could sometimes just be sensed as such but a few were/are surprises to discover especially when it comes to people I knew from grade school or all the way to high school but only discovered their trip to our world because of FakeBook.
My all time favorite Dark Star. A-fucking-mazing! I'm going to keep this on loop all morning. I hate to use this word, but this is the definition of EPIC. Mind blowing.
This is up there with 8/27/72, 2/13/70, 2/27/69, 9/27/72, and 4/8/72. There were several great Dark Stars in 73', including the 45+ minute version from 12/6 Cleveland. But this is my favorite one from 73' and one of their best ever.
I keep coming across versions of this meisterwerk that I have not heard before - and this particular performance must rank amongst the very very best, if not THE one. I agree with the chap below who marvels at the drums shifting at 23 minutes - the proof of a intuitive and telepathic bond between these psychedelic visionaries. Thank you. Dallas.., for sharing this!
Baloney! That one is exceptional though, especially around the MLB part. But I don't find this to be relatively "loose," I don't know where you got that idear.
TODAY IS 11-11 MAKEA. FUCKING WISH. DEAD HEADS UNITE FOR A BETTER AMERICA A BETTER LIFE A BETTER EVERYTHING THROUGH HOPE AND UNDERSTANDING .... NOW ON WITH THE SHOW. PEACE
Do such things happen nowadays ... or ever ? It would be the most beautiful thing happened to me. It is normal that strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hands, but here it is about something much different... You really mean it?
@jg6698 I mean nitrous is literally nitrous oxide whippits (laughing gas, same stuff the dentist uses), so nothing really unbelievable there, but 15 tabs of acid... ya either that's the lowest dosed cid, or he's full of shit
This is a keeper, but is it from 11/11/73 or as it confusingly also says above, "Dark Star [2] [Live at Winterland, December 31, 1978]" ?? I'm confused??
this version should be required listening on a regular basis by every man woman and child on this planet
"Dark Star" is a cornerstone of psychedelic music
You know it's a good Dark Star when he doesn't start singing til almost 17 minutes in :)
Great year for the boys😊
Doctor: You have approximately 35 minutes left to live.
me: Alexa play "Grateful Dead - Dark Star 11-11-73" on youtube
The transition to Mind Left Body jam at the end is the best musical representation of hope that I've ever heard
Bob totally eggs it on until Jerry finally gets it and jumps in

Grateful Dead is a cornerstone of MY psychedelic history 😎🙃
Phil is absolutely in the pocket in this. Ahhhhhh his bass playing is godly on this
This has been an amazing way to spend 35 minutes. Nothing left to do but smile smile smile
One of my all time favorite Dark Stars for decades
The height of musical genius this one. It really doesn't get any better than this.
Lol
I needed this after telling Capital One off on the phone this morning. We have no privacy anymore. God Bless the Dead! " FREEDOM "
Dead heads say every Dark Star is their favorite Dark Star.

Yeah. Soon after the long agonizing decline began.

This one in my top 5 all time Dark Stars. For sure. Like, really man, really.
There's part of me that thinks its a bad sign for our society that something like this only has 18k views. But...at least it has that.
My favourite Dead song.
My all time favorite Dark Star. A-fucking-mazing! I'm going to keep this on loop all morning. I hate to use this word, but this is the definition of EPIC. Mind blowing.
All four 72-74 Winterland Dark Stars are outstanding!
I play this while I'm painting at my easel in my Art studio. It takes me to Mars and back with new enlightenment each time I listen.
great dark star

This my favourite of 73, the boys always bring it home at Winterland..A brilliant Dark Star.
No words can really describe this. So I wont even try. Just beautiful.
Much obliged, this particular one is far out. Very jazzy...
This one definetly implores me to imagine things deeply. Mostly things about space.

Life just isn't the same without that

kreutzmann is such a god among men. the way he brings the drums in after the spacey jam is perfection itself. 23:25
lsd
Absolutely. Such a masterful drummer...and the foundation to everything!!!!
Nice long version of a great song
god that little buildup into around 31:00. it's like light at the end of a tunnel. so beautiful
This one's been long referred to as "The Thinking Man's Dark Star."
Don't think...just listen!
Mick Jagger i think they pulled this jam
Off better at the Spectrum in Philly in 72. This one gets a little too loose
Baloney! That one is exceptional though, especially around the MLB part. But I don't find this to be relatively "loose," I don't know where you got that idear.
so someone tweeted about this and i looked it up. what exactly is a dark star?
Press "play"...
Outstanding! Best Dark Star I've ever heard!

Masterful Dead....
I want to get stoned, and let the music take me away.
At least 15 hits LDS and six giant bottles of nitrous I had it was a good concert
How does one bottle nitrous, asking for a friend
@@newusernamehere4772 sounded good when he made it all up. These Dead threads are always packed with young fantacists.
@jg6698 I mean nitrous is literally nitrous oxide whippits (laughing gas, same stuff the dentist uses), so nothing really unbelievable there, but 15 tabs of acid... ya either that's the lowest dosed cid, or he's full of shit
