We have come to an age where we thank companies for making something that actually works. I am happy Roland made the right calls and can not wait to hear what you come up with using this combo!
It would be simpler if Roland equipped these groove boxes with Bluetooth. In the meantime , I’m hoping that they release a portable multitrack recorder with Bluetooth.
I’ve run my volume hungry SM7B through the E4 with just a xlr to 1/4 cable and it sounded great and had plenty of volume. Very clean and clear …. There’s a mic gain and a output volume.
Thanks. You can send audio from the iPad to the E4 and use the effects. You will need some way to record that audio you send from the iPad to the E4 as there is no built in recorder within the E4.
I appreciate your review. As someone who is learning the basics of the E-4 it’s certainly helpful to have someone realizing the same things. I do wonder though if hat other iPad apps can work with his that are reliable. The one you use seems good. I think it’s $30 bucks on the App Store (Jan 2025). Wondering if anybody uses something else that would be fairly easy and fun to use?
Hey thanks! A lot has changed since this video. Still have the E4, just not using it as much. That is on me, not the device. The two apps, AUM and Koala, are highly recommended. There are sales from time to time. I would look into other FX apps if your focus is on the E4 if you feel the device is limiting. As you begin to experiment, maybe app audio into the E4. Have fun!
@@krazywabbitthanks for the app suggestions. The AUM appears easy to understand for me. I have a couple I already have installed so I’ll try those first. But I did wonder, this Roland series has a few units that do different things. They seem to be designed to work together. Did you try the others and if so would you recommend a model? Are they reliable when all hooked up to the iPad? Just curious. Thanks again for your time! Cheers.
Thanks for the video man, liked/subbed. It's really great to see Roland finally making USB Audio/MIDI Class Compliant devices. Do you know if it also works the other way with an input from the iPad through USB to the E4, so you can use it for monitoring the master audio from the mix-out ? That would avoid the need to use a special hub with mini-jack-out or a hub + dongle/sound card ?
Thanks and subbed back. I believe it does as it acts as an audio interface. I’m in the middle of getting ready for a big move. Once I get settled in, it’ll be a month, I’ll got back a revisit.
@@krazywabbit it would be really cool actually as it would serve not only as a mic preamp, a vocal fx processor / looper but also as an audio monitor out with master FX / looper for live perf or for remixing and recording back to the iPad. Crazy possibilities if it’s possible and even crazier possibilities if it routes the audio coming from the iPad through USB to the FX. Basically a 2 out / 2 in audio interface with built-in FX (the mic in being stereo from my understanding). Also notice this unit has a hidden secondary mono input on the mix-out using a TRRS splitter. I guess it merged the signal to the stereo input you showed in AUM.
Great video, man! I'm a total beginner here...Just wondering: how do they actually work together for live jams? Like...No delay or latency problems? Can you actually sing along with other apps using AUM in perfect synch? Thank you so much!
PS: I'm between buying a whole roland set (e4 + j6 + t8) vs an iPad + e4, for jamming and live recording ambient and electronic music + covers/versions of songs I like.

Hey, man! I got the E4 and the iPad, but I'm having a small problem here...Maybe you can help (?) I'm using an iPad Air 5 and audio monitors. I like to live jam, so recording with the E4 is not my main goal, and because of that I'm plugging it into an auxiliar output in the monitor...But whenever I try to record using the e4, by plugging into the usb hub, it goes through the iPad, it records, but it kills my speakes, they go completely mute and I can only listen to anything through headphones plugged into the E4...I've tried everything I could and can't seem to find a solution. Thank you for the attention.
Hey great video, anything ipad is up my alley. I’ve been searching the Roland E-4 manual, but haven’t found any info if there’s a wet/ dry mix somewhere. The earlier Roland VT-4 seems to have a Balance Effect fader, so I’m it’s somewhere in the E-4. 😢
Thanks for trying this. I'm looking to add the E4 to my live looping setup. I also use my ipad pro connected to my allen&heath qu-24 mixer and it worked to my surprise. Have you tried connecting multiple devices to the ipad using a hub with success? Currently I use the apple keyboard case and it gives me an extra usbc port allowing me to charge the ipad on one and connect to my qu-24. I would like to further expand its capabilities.
Thanks for watching! I setup up all three with the Zoom H6 and the Rodecaster Pro II. I am having some issues with cables (another story/video). The iPad can only read one audio interface. The three (T6, J8, E4) are essentially audio interfaces and iPad will only read one if trying to connect with USB cables. Once I get some cables that I ordered, I will do a video showing the use of the RCP II and Zoom. From there, you can see where trying another audio interface might work.
@@krazywabbit Looking forward to more videos. Another cool device I found useful is the widi master. You can use it on any midi devices midi out and trigger virtual instruments on the ipad over bluetooth midi. no cables. and the device will self power.
This is really cool! I have a noob question, though. Is it possible to use a Bluetooth speaker as an output? The idea would be to speak into the microphone, which goes through the Roland E4 and we hear the live sound on a Bluethoot speaker that is connected to the iPad (no recording required). If possible, how to deal with the (likely) feedback sound which is going to be produced. Thank you!
@@krazywabbit Hey thanks for he quick response. I can confirm that using a Bluethoot speaker is totally possible. Any ideas how to deal with the unwanted feedback noise?

However, I didn’t fully grasp much at this point when this video was made. My guess is it should interface fine. I’ll try at least that part and report back.
It’s cool. Just ordered this box and I’ll find out for myself. I do have Loopy Pro on my iPad mini 6. Wondering how this will sit with the TX-6 from Teenage Engineering.
This video shows how to route audio from the E-4 into the iPad, but then by default it sends the audio back out to the E-4., so the iPad's built in speakers don't work. You can send the audio out to an Airplay speaker but that causes a delay. Is there a way to just have the iPad play the audio through its built in speakers?
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm kind of interested in this but I'm still on the fence between this and the Vt4. Vt-4 seems like it might be a little more suited for tracking in a studio. When you do harmonies how does it know that key you're in? At some point will you demo a short performance on your channel?

@@scottlebeau3498 you need to use a lightning adapter with the charge port for the iPad with a lightning port to see it. I don’t have GB installed on the iPad with lightning port (trying to save space) but GarageBand on the iPad with usbc port worked.
