I just bought the E-4 a few weeks ago and already love it. Since the early 2000s I've not been too enamoured with a tonne of Roland gear, but I feel like the E-4 is destined to become a minor classic! At first I was kinda hesitant as it doesn't have a balanced XLR input, but I must admit it has a really good mic preamp. Using it with a SM-58 with a 1/4" Jack there is virtually no hiss/noise or feedback even at high levels they an amp/p.a.. I've found that it sounds even better sticking my old Boss CS-3 compressor in front. Currently I'm using it in the FX send/return of my old mixing desk. TBH I'm absolutely loving experimenting with just the Scatter and reverb on a bunch of my old analog synth and drum machines especially on the TB-303, it sounds wonderfully deranged!😁 I paid £143 for it which is great, it's worth it for the reverb and Vocoder function alone.

Is there a way to send notes to the e4 and sing in tune based on what's being played via midi? So not fixing the singed notes to a single note as this video. Letting the singing notes change naturally as I'd sing but in tune. I hope that makes sense :) also when I turn on auto pitch I can't turn it off. The only way to remove the fixed singing controlled via midi is to turn off the device.

Hi, I finally got the E-4! But I can not seem to find a way to change the darn tempo from the default 130bpm that shows up on the display when I first turn it on. Have you figured out how to change the tempo? It affects almost everything with respect to the effects, scatter, delay, looper, and is frustrating not even the online manual talks about how to change the darn tempo lol. Any help would be great. Also, do I have to use the battery all the time or can I plug the unit into a 5V brick and use it safely that way? A great device but at first try seems very limited.
Can it do hard tune for auto pitch like train ? The vt4 can and the only thing preventing me from buying this instead is if it also does it
What do you mean by hard tune? Sorry I'm a little out of touch with what things are called haha.
@@FreeBeat sorry auto correct changed my orginal so sentence it’s like deep autotune like tpain would use. It appears to have it but o haven’t see. Anyone make a video using it for more than 2 seconds it was a big feature of the vt4 and for example the c1 hardtune by tc electronics is basically a dedicated pedal to just that. It’s basically the autotune with like 80 percent or higher settings
@@VitaEx Yes you can do that :)
@@FreeBeat rock on thanks
What if my midi out of the keystep is already being used to go to my roland MC-101 midi in? how do I connect my keystep to the E-4?
I feel like the vocoder alone is worth the price. Im wondering, since the mic input is a TS, can you plug a guitar in? 🤔
No, the mic input is for mic signal, -50 dBV compared to instrument signal level at -10. But the TRRS input is line level, could use that
You beat me to it haha.
Vocoder chords + looper = FREE BEAT CHOIR!
That might have to happen haha.
im trying to find a cable that can connect my aira e-4 to my sp404 mk2? Can you help me
Are you talking MIDI or audio, and what do you want to do with them?
@@FreeBeat I just want to record coming from Aira E-4 to the sp404 but with a midi controller connected to the E-4 just like in this video.
I dont know if its possible.
@@vergellim7361 Sure! Just use something like this amzn.to/45OOTQO
The dual 1/4" ends go into the inputs on the 404, then the single 1/8" end goes into the E-4. Then just connect a MIDI controller to the E-4 like normal.
@@FreeBeat Thanks. can i use this cable to connect to my Midi controller.www.sweetwater.com/c677--MIDI_Interfaces?highlight=MIDIminiTRSM&mrkgadid=&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=gpla&mrkgbflag=1&mrkgcat=drums&percussion&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=92700073370090877&lid=92700073370090877&ds_s_kwgid=58700007963105270&ds_s_inventory_feed_id=97700000007215323&dsproductgroupid=1795338701694&product_id=MIDIminiTRSM&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=m&network=u&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9031928&creative=615094225367&targetid=pla-1795338701694&campaignid=17962511191&awsearchcpc=&&&gclid=Cj0KCQjwj_ajBhCqARIsAA37s0xmp5DtD09WyPSDMsCTVpKk22shvWU4I2LWSJuTTC8747ulz-L1F7gaAtquEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
I dunno… after hearing this I’m starting to lean towards getting an E4 versus the T4.
Hello,
A question for the experts.
*How do I connect devices with built-in sounds
Directly to a control keyboard that has no sounds?
*Which cables do I need? And what is the friend why?
- I have: launchkey 25 mk Novation control keyboard
and want to connect it for example:
to CIRCUIT TRACKS.
Or - for the Roland device / Roland Aira S-1
and use their sounds.
Many thanks to the helpers.
Yes you can do that :) Thanks for watching!
@@FreeBeat could you make a video tutorial about that? I think It would be super useful for many vocalists like me. Thank you a lot, I'm not missing any of your videos :)
@@meglioiguai Already did!

Weird question: Why do you use Ring/Tip splitter cables so often on devices that you could just plug a single Stereo 3.5mm cable into? (I get it when you're interfacing with Pocket Operators, but why, for example, on this video)?
Separate left/right inputs on the audio interface or mixer?
I use the Zoom Livetrak L-12 to record all of my audio. That 3.5mm cable you always see goes into a separate left and right input on the L-12, in channels 11/12. You can see my setup in this video ruclips.net/video/upEL19e1Gx8/видео.html :)
Hey, can someone HELP, I have the J6 and the E4 and It doesn't work. The midi works because when I press play on the j6 there is a dot blinking on the E4 but if I press any button on the j6 it doesn't change the pitch, I turn key IN, out on the FiH etc but it do not work. Please someone help :) love you guys
I'm loving the sound of the E-4 but what's up with not being able to tap or otherwise set tempo? That's kind of a bummer
Tom Sawyer... ❤
Nice video! Is there a vocoder setting where the mic input is closed, when you don’t play a key? Otherwise all noises around you on stage will trigger the vocoder in your breaks:)
Not that I've found, but it seems Roland has hidden all sorts of secret settings in the E-4 without documenting them lol.
Please, can this be an auto tune in the sense of singing in line with chord progression that's controlled by MIDI keyboards?
Or singing to scale that fits the chord progression?
Or scale that can be chosen on the MIDI keyboard?
Doesn’t seem to be working with my AKAI mpk mini plus, followed very same instructions, channel is 1 on both and the e-4 doesn’t seem to receive de midi anyone’s facing something like this ???
I bought a CA-3 5-pins DIN-TRS mini jack Midi-adapter , followed all steps of the video over and over and i cannot make it work.
Now I'm not sure if i bought the right adapter...can someone help me ,I'm going nuts...!?...😫
All of the ones I have have stopped working too :(
@@FreeBeat i found out the problem...i had to change the midi output channel from the Arturia key 37, meanwhile I've also found out that you can also change the midi input channel from the Roland E3...😉...maybe you're having the same issue....
You are turning me into a fan of this box, but I'm still unimpressed with the other 2
Good thing I got the E-4 then lol.
Everything usually goes to midi 1 by default, so no need to switch.
Thanks for watching!
Hey there ! I tried to follow the steps to connect the unit via Midi with a midi keyboard (Keylab 49), but apparently the e-4 doesn’t receive the midi information from the keyboard, anyone with the same issue? 😢
I'm having the same issue...followed all steps over and over...now i'm suspecting that i bought the wrong midi adapter (a CA-3 5-pins DIN-TRS mini jack Midi-adapter)...🤷🏻♂️
Any luck Sergio?
@@Leo-ug4rf hello!!!
I had to set the keyboard and e-4 to the same midi channels !!!
There's a very complete tutorial over the e4.
I'll look for it and share here in the comments...

Noooooooo ! Why din't you use the arp of the keystep !!!!!
Wanted to keep this one simple for now :)
3.5mm midi 😓.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of it either.
@FreeBeat. What about midi via usb from my keyboard. Can’t get it to work. Any tips!
Ok, fun. Don’t wanna be a spoilsport but isn’t the Roland VT-4 a lot more bang for bucks?
I really liked the smaller form factor and the built in rechargeable battery. I also use Pocket Operators often, so being able to sync the Looper up with those is nice. Thanks for watching!
Curious if you have done a comparison and what your thoughts are on the two?
Nothing new here, just get a microkorg.
While the Microkorg does have a great vocoder, it's a very different device than the E-4.
I laungh alot bro so funny video congrats!
