I’d be getting one of these for myself if my roommate didn’t let me use his VT-4 full sized one. This one looked like the most interesting out of the Compact series. Good call!
This is the one I really want. I should probably invest more time in learning my Microkorg and it's vocoder though, and the mpc software voice effects.
Vocoders usually mess up speech so much that it is really hard to understand. This thing doesn’t, you can still follow what is being said. That is really nice!
I think, the way you have it, the PO-24 by-passes signal processing. You need a TRRS splitter thru the 3.5mm headphone jack. The mic side of the splitter will allow incoming audio to be processed as well as your 1/4" mic input...
This is an excellent bargain considering I paid $700 for a VP-7 years ago which does pretty much the same thing. But the VP-7 also turns your voice into several choices of choirs which is awesome. Search RUclips for it and you'll find a guy singing some amazing gospel songs through it!
Just want to second some of the other comments here - I'd love to hear other instruments/synths processed by this unit to see what kind of mayhem you could get up to.
I’ve had this for a couple weeks. I was most interested in running instruments thru it. Unfortunately I found that the unit seems to have some inherent noise, weak signal (clean signal is horrible), and just unprofessional results. I’m actually wondering if I have a partially defective unit.. it’s that bad. The inputs seem WAY overly sensitive. I tried many different sources through both inputs. The biggest issue to me is that, even with all effects turned off, the pitch of the output is slightly varying with gross artifacts. If this is just the way this thing is, I only see it useful for super heavy effects…like the vocoder+harmonizer which is cool.
Yeah I've been having a blast with it, as has my girlfriend lol. A few glasses of wine, some backstreet boys karaoke tracks, and the E-4 with a keyboard are a recipe for a good time hahaha.
Do you know if the E4 can pass the MIDI THRU from my iPad to another hardware synth?? I want to use as an audio interface of my iPad but I'd like to use my sequencers apps sending MIDI THRU the E4 straight to my other synths. Is it possible as there is only midi in/out in the back....
Good day and thanks for this. Can you connect the Roland E-4 directly to a video cameras mic input to record the tweaked camera or do you need to sync it in post?
Why not get a VT4 if you need a portable unit, but my experience is that the Roland VT4 comes with a bit of noice, but I plug it in to my SSL2 Audio interface, with that it sounds great.
I've been toying with the idea of a VT-4 for a while, but with the Aira being a new release, and the internal battery recharged with type C, it just felt like a great fit for the channel. Thanks for watching!
Hi, I just got one of these and love your video! I am using mine with a dynamic mic (Behringer XM8500). The signal seems a bit low, do you run this through an audio interface to bring the signal up? Thanks!
@@FreeBeat Thanks for responding! I got a new cable and didn't need to use a preamp to get it to line level! Can I ask - do you use it with a speaker or an amp? Or do you put it through your audio interface? Thanks!
I've tried it with a super cheap (and old) Radioshack microphone, and the results weren't great. But I know there are other cheap mics that are better quality, so I'm really not sure haha.
Yeah that's pretty much where I'm at too haha. Free Beat "the channel" might get the J-6 to showcase, but Free Beat "the person" wanted the E-4 lol. Thanks for watching!
Does it work automaticaly with windows 10, audio universal without additionnal program. I need some kind of simple voice changer for entertaining my niece who is in hospita.l. she loves when i sub some of her prefered animes.
So I did get it to work without any additional software, but the audio latency was pretty bad (probably about a half second or so). Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Yes it definitely is! You can actually set it to fixed pitch if you'd like, or even use a keyboard (or sequencer) to make sure you're always singing the right notes. Thanks for watching :)
this is freaking cool it's almost like my TC Helicon voicelive Touch. but I feel this is more then enough, on my Voice live I have alot of sounds that seem very repetitive and it's a bit of a let down. so I also like the Roland smaller foot print. 😁👊
Yeah haha, I didn't actually run the PO-24 through it in this video, just passed the audio through. I'll post a video about running audio through the effects soon!
It's a shame that as the channel grows and the money flows in that the new gear comes thick and fast. A couple of years ago your channel was interesting as it covered pocket operators, which I was mainly interested in, and eventually convinced me to get an OPZ. Now its just more and more new gear that I have absolutely no interest in, just like many other you tubers, and the interest fades. Good luck with future unboxing of the latest gear, I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for one day, maybe 🤔😊👍
The Sonicware Liven XFM and Roland E-4 are literally the 2nd and 3rd pieces of gear I've picked up this year. And guess what the first one was...a Pocket Opeator (PO-133 Street Figher) lol. Someone did send me the Deluge, and I was so excited about it that I probably did make a few too many videos on it right away, and for that I apologize. Free Beat has never been a Pocket Operator exclusive channel, the main focus has always been on budget gear as a whole. Both of the devices I just unboxed fall squarely into that category, and they will be added into my normal content, and featured for years to come, just like the other gear I own. Your comment hurts a little bit, not gonna lie, because one of the things I pride myself on is continually using budget gear, well after it has been released, in new and exciting ways, as well as still making tutorial and tip videos for that gear, again, well after the release. That's why I'm still averaging one Pocket Operator video a week. Heck, I'm currently working on a Pocket Operator concept album, and planning a big release for that this summer. Also, the money is certainly not "flowing" lol. I barely manage to pay rent each month, and I certainly don't have the funds to keep the gear flowing thick and fast haha. I've been saving up extra bits here and there for the past five months, trying to figure out exactly what to add to the channel's arsenal. As someone who enjoys covering budget grooveboxes, the Liven XFM felt like a good fit, especially at $199. I've also been after a new effects unit for a while, as well as a way to add vocals to my personal music outside of the channel videos. When Roland announced the E-4, I realized it would fill many different roles for both the channel, and myself personally. Sorry for the extended explanation, just wanted to let you know that I don't just go buying gear on a whim. I've put lots of thought and strategy into these two purchases. Like I said in the video, they just happened to show up at the same time. Since I'm not really one to manufacture things on the channel, I just released the videos back to back. I do apologize if you've been expecting daily Pocket Operator content this whole time, and I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. I totally understand if this drives you from the channel, and if that's the case, I'm grateful for the time you did spend here. All the best, Free Beat

So much new gear coming out, it's a very exciting time. So much of it is relatively low cost too, which is the best part imo. Music is life!
Yeah, I love that these two new pieces of gear don't even total $400!

Okay...I just ordered mine and will have it tomorrow! Hopefully, it will cover my live vocoder needs!
Amazing. Can't wait to see more of this and your take on the XFM!!!
They'll both be thrown into the normal rotation soon :) Thanks for watching!
I love my VT-4 vocal FX processor. The battery built in is super nice, I have to plug in mine to the wall or use AA batteries.
Yeah, that was one of my main reasons for going with the E-4 instead of the VT-4. Thanks for watching!

Out of interest, would this really offer much benefit over the MPC One's built in Vocal Effects?
Probably not, other than hardware control, and the flexibility of it being a standalone piece of gear. Thanks for watching!
It was easy to understand your words through the vocoded part at 5:35, which means it must be pretty decent.
