Years later, even in hindsight, Sven still thought he made the right call. Owen got injured so only Crouch as back up and Walcott didn’t play a second. I agree.
Th strikers he took was an injured Owen, 18 year old Rooney (who got injured) , crouch and Walcott two of the top 5 English strikers of that year was Defoe and bent didn’t take any of them - if you think this made sense u know nothing about football
@@helicoptergunship He scored over 100 goals for Arsenal in his career. He defiantly didn’t fulfil his potential but to say he was a mediocre player his whole career is nonsense.
I always thought people going mad about Walcott being picked was an overreaction. Hardly any nation uses all 23 players in a tournament. there's always the starting 11 and like a core of 4 or 5 subs used. the rest stay on the bench or don't play significant minutes. It shouldn't have been that big of a deal.
@@Edgisco no because if you're given 23 slots, you should fill them all up. Most important in reality is filling up 17 or 18. The rest won't play significant minutes. Like if Defoe was picked and England were chasing the game, you wouldn't take off Rooney Or Owen would you?
Walcott was 17 and had just finished one season in the Championship.

Ultimately, the best team didn’t get picked and it cost us. So frustrating at the time
I understand Sven’s thinking Walcott could be a wildcard. But he never even played him!

Defoe was quality. He should have gone in 2006 and 2014!
Hes black thats why
@andrewhyde4708 Unfortunately Hodgson didn’t pick Defoe for 2014 as he’d gone to Toronto FC.
Yes brother!
@@calvinhicks1992 He'd also scored 1 PL goal in the 2013 calendar year which didn't help
@@thf3038 Very true
I get why he took Theo, at the time he was englands next big thing but still would feel so unfair
To be honest, Walcott's career didn't even justify that selection. He was an average player at best
Facts. He had a bit of pace so everyone insisted he was the next henry, or even owen, but he was mediocre overall.

Hatred these days is crazy, even with his injuries he was above average

He scored a 100 goals for arsenal.
100 goals for the team as a winger.
Ridiculous to call him average.
Defoe is my jigga escobar and all that real one done bits for us
Disgraceful decision. The pain is still there now. It was ultimate fcukeries.
This stupid decision by Sven probably cost us the WC ffs , Defoe could have grabbed a winner against the Portuguese
Total rubbish. We could barley beat Trinidad and Tobago. Awful from start to finish

By that logic just take 18 players then? It was wasteful

They had Rooney and Crouch. They were good enough.@@Edgisco
