  • In this episode we face a weather conundrum. We change course for Hilo, on the Big Island but the wind clocks against us and we have to turn back toward Oahu and face the biggest seas of the voyage as we sail into Hawaii.

Thank you so much for the kind words. They came at a time where I was feeling very disillusioned about making these videos. It is encouraging to know that there are people who like to watch them.

Must be a record slow trip!
You need to go to two videos a week!

Hahaha 56-days! It’s OK I needed enough content to cover my trip to Samoa. Can’t load full length videos offshore on passage.

56days!?!?! That's pretty much twice as long.
Where you far off course when the wind vane quit working? Or maybe heaving to in the nights?
That roughly 50 nm per day = 2.5 to 3 knots avg. I suppose a wooden boat with some whiskers... that's about right. Man. Congratulations.
Y'all'll be able to handle any passage after a 56 day run!

No, it took 56 days! If I told you the reason you wouldn’t have to watch the rest of the videos to find out why. 🤣 start at the beginning of the Hawaii videos I think it’s a good story might enjoy it

Thanks for the videos! Very interesting to see what life is like on a NorSea 27 on a crossing of the pacific in the winter. Having just experienced such a crossing again, what type of boat would you recommend to future sailors looking to do this crossing? Would you steer people towards 27' boats, 37' boats, or 47' boats and why? Thanks!

First, thanks for watching! That is a really difficult question to answer because it depends on the individual sailors and how many there are on the crossing. For three people, I would recommend a larger boat than this. I think ideally a 33 foot to 36 foot boat. While this is a very sea worthy boat, it’s comfort rating is definitely not very high offshore.. for a couple it would be very nice as far as space goes but again not very comfortable offshore. Her secondary stability is phenomenal so she is a very safe boat in large seas. The ability to store everything you need is also a factor, and although we were able to take everything we needed the boat was definitely overloaded, which affects her ability to go to windward and we had to reef earlier as a result as well. All of that equates to a slower passage. All of that being said, everything is cheaper to fix moorage is much cheaper and of course the purchase price of the boat is less in general. And the big plus of a Nor’Sea 27 is we can put her on a trailer and move her to a whole new place when we get home.

Just a question? Do you feel your second guessing yourself and changjng courses so many times due to fear of wind caused this overly extensive time on the journey? Also, do you guys have a motor? I feel like that would be my first choice to help the boat come thru the channel to Oahu. Just wondering. Research for myself :)

I do feel that weather choices definitely played a part in how long it took us to get there. Mostly because we sat on the anchor for so long waiting for that big storm to pass. I don’t think that was the wrong choice though trading time at Sea to avoid 25 foot seas and 50 kt winds in a 27 foot boat is not a bad choice. If you’re interested in my sailing tactics and you have time watch some of the former videos and then will answer most of your questions. I have 100,000 miles offshore. I sail differently than most people I choose to wait for wind, and I never force the boat to a destination, I choose my destination based on the weather. Yes we have a motor however, it’s an electric motor a true auxiliary. We never motor to a destination. Thanks for watching!
