That is Gaboon Ebony ... not ignoring the Yellowish white streak of sap wood on the edge, Gaboon Ebony is recognized by the Greyish, silver type streaks in the black heartwood. Trying to find such large pieces is difficult due to their tonal quality and their use in musical instruments. The wood is very dense and hard and when harvested and stored incorrectly causes cracking of the wood from the Pith and not ignoring termite damage to the wood. A pity about these woods being called Exotic is that trees are the most renewable resource yet very few are replanted or reforested ... used if fires for warmth and cooking. Sad. Ie. Canadian Softwood and Hardwood industry depends on reforestation by law. When polished ... wow. Nicely done. ❤😊😊😊😊😊
I don't think that's gaboon ebony. It's one of those jet black ebony we have here in South East Asia. There is one ultra fine jet black with very small and fine grain and there is another species also jet black, without the former's luster and has bigger grain. The wood you see in this video is the latter, it's valued less than the former type. You can see that the ebony here still has visible wood grain, hence it's not the top premium jet black ebony, but still very good looking wood.
@@SavageDragon999 Thank you ... knowledge is for sharing. I did not know there was a black ebony outside the African Continent. Is the species name for it? Appreciate your time and knowledge.
@Fireatank diospyros mun is the name of the premier variant. The lessee premium variant (this one in the video) does not have a scientific name and not enough research has gone into it. keep in mind that in the US the general information you'll find about diospyros Mun is that it's often called Mun ebony but be aware that those "mun" ebony pieces you see in the US aren't the true jet black or true diospyros Mun, but it's just a Laos striped ebony similar to makassar ebony. All the "mun" ebony you see in the US are misidentified. True diospyros Mun like I said should be jet black. This guy's channel has a video where he cuts a true diospyros Mun slab you can see the video titled (how hard is ebony cutting wood with handsaw). That wood in that video is the premium jet black ebony species. It's olive green when freshly cut and will fade to uniform black after wax and oxidizing. It has the FINEST wood grains amongst all the hardwood in South East Asia, and highest density. It doesn't exist in the US or EU market at all and even in South East Asia it's extremely rare. The US market does not know about it and still refers to Mun Ebony as the striped Laos diospyros variant. In my opinion true jet black ebony, the premium species, is a grade higher than gaboon ebony. Gaboon ebony is on the same level as the lesser premium variant (this axe handle) as its wood grain is still quite big and visible across all surfaces.
@@SavageDragon999 That's awesome information. Many ... as in 30 some years ago, worked in a woodshop. See, I like this for many reasons. One is that it delivers EXACTLY what it says it will. That is indeed the largest ebony fire axe handle i've ever seen. I have not seen many fire axes with ebony handles, bc in North America, we don't have much ebony. So it's an expensive material. Axe handles gonna be fiberglass/ synthetic, or hickory. Hickory is nice. I think baseball bats are often hickory. I have a hickory handle hatchet (about $25) and one for short sledge hammer, small like 1 or 2 pound sledge. Both handles are about 18". This handle looks about eight or nine feet. Okay i'm exaggerating. Looks about 1.25 meters. About 50-55" -still too big for me (i'm 6'2")
Yeah in America you'd be spending a long time and lots of money looking for a suitable slab for this handle. Most of the wood sold there are cut either too small, too thin (guitar backs) or too short, or has too many defects and holes to be suitable for working axes./
