Jerry was completely right about ending the show.
Dragging a show's length because "its popular" will drastically diminish its quality, reputation and legacy.
That also backs up his statement about money not being the end goal. (even though he was already rich when he said it)
Beyond that, what I find brilliant is that it stayed totally in the 90s, which in my opinion makes it a comedic time capsule

I find season 2 to 7 were the close of it's comedic quailty and I tend not to skip anything during them. 8 and 9 have some good episodes, but some of them were went beyond the ridiculous and I skip most of them during rewatches.

That's not why he ended the show, Larry David left after season 7 and you can see the immediate decline. He shut it down because they couldn't keep the quality up with Larry gone.
I never agreed with the saying "If your job is what you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life" but "the blessing in life is finding a torture you're comfortable with" is so much more accurate and I love it
For me, and for many others, the first saying is still good and applicable, though I must agree that technically, it makes very little sense, in a few ways (one can work and love doing it, or just love working). The most substantial problem is that even in spirit, as an absolute saying, it doesn't work for all. But it's good to note that for many, it does express the spirit of the same important idea as the latter quote. I personally empathize far less with the latter quote, as I virtually never identify the things I love doing as torture, even very figuratively. But I do understand that sentiment and perspective. Perhaps I'm in the camp that's just happier with difficulty and challenge than those tortured souls in the Seinfeld camp.

I have a confession. I have watched many Seinfeld stand up bits and i never laughed. It is really wierd for me that here is a comedian who has that level of respect and success and i did not get it all. It is good to know that i am not completely alone.

I don't like him either, but his comedy style was the exact formula for standup success in the 80s. There was a time when the Seinfeld approach to comedy absolutely killed in bars and comedy clubs. He was lucky to land that sitcom before the standup drought of the 90s began.
Never found him the least bit funny but he certainly was/is very lucky. He strikes me as the Larry King of comedy or perhaps the Wolf Blitzer.
I thought it was me.....I've never ever laughed at anything he has said. I just do not get him. Sorry I tell a lie...I sort of laugh at how much of a legendary figure he seems to think he is.
And I'm only hearing about his relationship with a 17 year old now. It doesn't surprise me though. Something off, odd and very very thin skinned about him.
A show that stops too early will still be remembered fondly, but a show that goes on for too long will rarely be remembered fondly.

Seinfeld is pretty good himself. However, the show never would have worked without Larry David - he was the real writer. If we're talking comedic observations, they're about equal,; if we're talking stage performance, it's 75% Seinfeld; but if we're talking writing a script, it's 90% Larry.

I’ve never been a fan of his stand up comedy. However, he did help make the funniest sitcom of all time and I have to give him props for that. More so, he’s a really smart businessman and a hard worker and that’s to be commended as well.
He's a funny person and very good at sarcasm, but I actually think his stand up is the weakest part of his comedic ability. I agree.

hiy standup is straight trash, and he is a deeply unfunny person. he exudes a visceral soullessness, some kind of cluster b personality disorder that he has learned to present exceptionally openly because apparently it gets read as deadpan or sarcasm.
This is the perfect balance between talking head, commentary, archive footage. Good control of production level too, just enough to complement the footage while not overdoing it. Truly great video, I look forward to more.

Exceptionally well made. I just watched a 2004 Documentary about the making of Star Wars last week. Watching your video of Seinfeld, it felt every bit as engaging, visually constructed, scripted, etc. The amount of time and effort put into this really shows, awesome stuff.

I've got this shy, quiet, awkward friend who I'd never guess would do it in a million years but he's getting into stand-up. When his brother first told me, I kept asking, "Stand-up? Justin? Are you sure? Did I hear you right?".. I mean, I guess a lot of the time, people like that make the best comedians. I remember, our group was the kind to always be unfazed but very often, he would just randomly say something that made us all pause and stare at him.. But I guess if he can channel that and get the timing down and everything, he could probably be pretty funny. He's been doing it for a while and I keep meaning to go see him sometime.

I feel like the show was what it was because of Larry David. And also, in my opinion, Larry David was truly the one who left when he was at his peak. It completely changed tone after he left. It was not unfunny, but definitely went down a notch. Jerry, being the creator could see that more clearly.
Curb solidifies this take
Season 8 and 9 are ten times better than season 7. Season 7 is even jarring at times, people only remember the soup nazi, and forget that the rest of the episodes were some of the most mediocre of the show. Unpopular opinion: The show got BETTER when Larry left.

Jerry did the right thing with quitting Seinfeld after 9 seasons. There is a saying "when the party is at it best leave". Seinfeld Season 5 is my favourite season in a comedy show and i couldn't stop laughing my ass off. Seinfeld is a really brilliant written Comedy. Every character is funny Elaine, Kramer, George, Jerry himself. I love this show Jerry Seinfeld is the GOAT
There's another reason he did it.
Seinfeld was a perfectionist.
He and David were heading up the show for seven seasons and hired the writers.
The writes would write the episode, and then Jerry and Larry went through it with a fine tooth comb to make it as funny as it could be. This process took up most of the week.
When Larry David left, Jerry had to carry the show on his own. He had to read over the episode presented to him, make changes, do all the other stuff heading up the show, and act in it too.
Jerry reported got burnt out. He didn't have time to do stand up any more (which is why they abandoned the stand up routine at the start and end of episodes). As the show got more popular, it meant that Jerry had to do more. He needed a break.
If Larry David had stayed, Seinfeld could have done a tenth season, as it wouldn't be so much put on Jerry.
Besides, most shows have a limited life. You can keep the ball in the air for only so long. Better it go out on top, rather than like many shows where it drags on, cast members leave to be replaced by less funny ones, and it looks the shadow of itself. Shows like "Seinfeld", "Friends" and "Mash" remain popular, because they finished while still rating well.

I was never a Seinfeld Show fan but this doc was done very well --- KUDOS!
I respect that he knew to end the show while it was on a high. In this era of reboots and comebacks, too many shows/movies are run into the ground. I wish more shows and franchises knew when to just let go.
To go out on top of your game is a brave decision. Few do it (including rock bands) but to leave people wanting more is a great thing artistically.

Seinfeld is a case study for ending shows on a high note. Not only did it preserve our respect and adoration for the show, but Netflix pays hundreds of millions of dollars to host it to this day because people just can't get enough of it

I met Jerry Seinfeld in 1988 when I was 20 years old. I lived in Birmingham, AL which had a surprisingly good comedy club and the hotel I worked at hosted the headliners. I tried to make sure I was working and driving the hotel van every weekend I could in order to maybe get to drive them around some so I met a lot of comedians but Jerry was by far the most famous one.
I was supposed to be driving him to the club but he was running late and it was a 20 minute drive so I rang his room just to check in with him. He told me, "I'm the headliner. They can't start without me!" He was very much joking though and showed up shortly thereafter. I mean, he was right, but he was still making a joke.
On the way to the club he was very cordial and made me laugh the whole way. He and Bob "Gilligan" Denver were two of the nicest celebrities I ever met.
This video feels like a masterclass in documentary editing, the pacing, commentary and footage is spectacular and well crafted. Congratulations man, that ending was superb.

My father introduced me to Jerry when I was 15 I saw the funniest episodes of Seinfeld and I grew up loving the series with my whole heart and I had the honor of seeing him on stage it was truly special. Jerry truly gave me the biggest laughs when I was down truly brilliant comedian.

Random observation, but I love that you made the Surfshark ad in the same style of the clips before and after the ad so it wouldn't be jarring to jump from modern footage back late '70/early' 80s video.
Seinfeld is really the only show from that era that I still sometimes watch because it was pure comedy, no serious dramatic or depressing moments, we have enough of those in real life we don't need them on screen too. Neuman was one of my favorite characters on there.

It is good to watch fun TV, or a fun movie, switch off your thoughts and let it wash over you. It is relaxing.
Too many shows today have to have a "message", make you think. Everything seems required to justify its own existence to mealy-mouthed misery guts who are angry about anything.
Seinfeld being about nothing is what makes it work. It is fluff, but people want that sometimes. We don't want to be told what to do or what to think.
Yet, Seinfeld is also relatable. They talk about things we all xan relate to, day-to-day. We might still learn something about ourselves and the world, but it is subtle and natural, not beating you over the head with it.
Escapism is a lost art in today's entertainment. Today, you must "learn something", and a lot of it is negative and nasty, even woke,. In today's worjd, and the mental health problems around, funny entertainment helps de-stress and takes you away from problems, even for a short time. It sure beats using drugs and alcohol to cope.

Weeds is a pretty good one that’s funny but it definitely has some drama lol i wish there were other shows like this. The only other thing i watch all of is Bob’s Burger’s lol and sometimes The Simpsons and Family Guy but that’s just bc i know the characters and that i might laugh a couple times. The New Adventures of Old Christine is really super funny without any of that other crap. I highly recommend that one for sure. I wish it was on Hulu lol

The thing about Seinfeld is he didn't steal other people's jokes or pretend someone else's point of view. He and David worked it until more people 'got it'.

Jerry, Julia, Jason and Michael are all icons, legends of acting and comedy. What I love the most about them is their humanity, they are very simple people, who struggled and made mistakes through their lives, like we all do.
I don’t want to come off cynical but they’re far more contemptible than what I’d like to expect from the average person. I do agree that they accurately portray behaviours/thoughts that we’ve all had at one time or another.
@@suissetobacco They're pretty accurate for people living in NYC at the time. It was (and may still be, I don't live there now) a city of mostly young, mostly single people, with a high degree of variation in pay but universally high rent. Many people, men and women, looking to get laid. Plenty of "grown up children" who continue the lifestyle long after people their age have got married and moved out of town. One of the attractions for people - men and women - in their 30s and even 40s was that you could still hook up with people in their 20s - people were not picky if you looked good or had money. Many people hooked up with richer people just to eat decent for a few days/weeks, or sleep in a decent bed, go see some shows. Many people worked through any exotic fetishes they had - dating people of a different race or gender just to say they did it. Couples were coordinated "items" - your partner for the evening being a fashion accessory. Of course, people spent more time trying to hook up and failing than they did actually in a relationship, and all these elements are highly exaggerated on Seinfeld for comedic effect.

I was partly addressing the fact that “and made mistakes through their lives, like we all do” can imply that this sort of behaviour is acceptable or normal. During a first watch, it was easy for me to skip over the fact all the characters were deeply flawed - I chalked it up to innocent quirks. Rewatching the series at a later time left me with a different impression: these people were shittier than I had thought and if it weren’t for them being fictitious I would lose hope in humanity if the people I knew behaved like this on a consistent basis (obviously I know that it’s a show and that normal behaviour doesn’t make for entertaining television, so there’s no real use in holding them to the same standards as real-life individuals). I still realized that I had dismissed what were serious character flaws to being innocent weaknesses, and I believe that some viewers miss that this a secondary thesis of the show. The creators wanted to show that people can be shitty in a slightly more subtle way than what was expected.

@@suissetobacco The amorality of the main characters was definitely by design. They had a rule while writing that they called "no hugging no learning". Essentially none of the characters were allowed to grow or reconcile.
This was really a reaction to the formulaic nature expected of sitcoms where the comedy had to fit in with some overarching plot, or love story, or the characters "learning a lesson". You aren't meant to feel bad for the characters or be invested in the plot points of their lives, but simply laugh at their eccentricities and the situations they get themselves into.
This is where I think the brilliance of the show lies and why it was so popular. Personally I find that the lessons many contemporary sitcoms try to teach are so childishly obvious that it's insulting. They didn't shoehorn in all this other fluff into the writing and stripped the format to a more concentrated form of comedy.
They were the first to refuse to abandon he strict format set out for sitcoms, and they really busted down the door. I'm not even really a fan of the show and don't find Jerry's stand up funny but I've seen enough sitcoms from his era and before and it's easy to see how everything after Seinfeld was changed by it for the better.

Absolutely galactic respect for Seinfeld - discovering him in my late teens (circa 2007-2010) was divine moment, "this is the one, where has he been?!" and Seinfeld the show is the absolute tonic that television needs. His decision to end it on a high-note after a solid 9 year run remains one of the greatest combined creative business decisions of all time, and the perfect accompaniment to the observation of zombie shows like The Simpsons that should have ended no later than 2004, if not 1998. It's weird when they talk about him dating a younger girl while completely it's that hoe who allowed him to date her, she wanted to date him because he was rich and famous, if she wasn't such a hoe and a scum she wouldn't date him. It's funny when they focus on only men whilst completely forgetting these hoes decide to date these guys

I want to give an example of how big Seinfeld isn't. I live in Thailand. In 2016 i went out with 3 British people and a conversation came up that had a Seinfeld reference. So I mentioned it. One of the British girls, who was around 25, said 'excuse me. What's a Seinfeld'. Her British male friend interjected saying 'umm. I think it's an old American movie'. I couldn't reply. It was a epiphany realising whatever is popular in America doesn't mean jack to the rest of the world.
It was popular all over the world at the time Even remote countries that you wouldn’t even think had access to television recognized Michael Richards. He told the story on Comedians in Cars getting Coffee-- I forget where he was. Some remote village in Africa I think…. Really out in the middle of nowhere. And some guy who didn’t speak English said something in his native tongue then pointed at him and said “Kramer?!”
Just because these British folks, who were just born when the show went off the air, don’t know seinfeld references - doesn’t mean as a whole Seinfeld wasn’t big in Britain. He absolutely was. (Well the show was)

Yes, of course, there’s always exceptions, and there’s some in the younger generations who stream it or watch it on syndication sure…. But as a whole, Seinfeldisms aren’t common with the twenty year olds in the States, either.
i´m from Portugal, i didn´t know the show existed until a few years back and only watch it this year and personally i don´t like, most topics still resist the time, but i dont find it funny the only thing that keep the show a little bit interesting is the character kramer.

No, it's just because Seinfeld wasn't popular in the UK. Friends was massively popular there, but Seinfeld never caught on with British audiences the way Friends did, for some reason.

What I love about Seinfeld is he just tells it as it is with absolute confidence and doesn’t feel the need to apologize or censor. He never really says anything too outrageous but it’s funny nonetheless. And Larry David played a huge part in making the show as successful as it was.

I started watching Seinfeld at like 8 years old and it shaped me an insane amount. I have this conflict in me between not caring for Jerry irl and still really loving the humor of the show. it's kind of sad how many comedians I have that same conflict with.
Why is it sad,? Good comedy develops out of real conflicts. It's ok to not care for Jerry at times as he behaves like a sociopath in the show and his stand up entries are horrible. And to that he is by far the bad apple regarding acting ability. Still I enjoy him in later seasons but it's fair game not to like him. I actually think that he contributed very little in terms of actual comedy writing.

When Seinfeld aired in the 90s I was too young to appreciate it. It was the 'boring grownups show' that followed The Simpsons and the signal for me to switch off the TV. All these years later I watched the whole series multiple times and it never fails to make me laugh. One of my absolute favorite shows and I have nothing but admiration and respect for Jerry Seinfeld.
search for the compilation of side by side review of all the cutaway-like scenes. I forget what they're called at the moment. Basically scenes where they mimic serious movies but in the show. The kramer being followed by the screaming woman on the street for stealing, was a real movie. The kramer mail episode where newman tells him he'll be picked up on a crisp autum day like today, was from 3 days of the condor. about 50% of the humor is contextually based on the culture and ideas and politics of the 80s and 90s, and siometimes back into the 60s or 70s. In 100 years no one will alugh at it the same way we cant read the humor in shakespeares works.
Anyway, you watch that compilation, its about 5 or 10 minutes long of scenes from the show and the comparison and you'll appreciate it even more.

I remember that HBO special Seinfeld did a few years after the show ended. I watched it with my uncle, I was like 15 at the time I think. It was pretty funny from what I remember, and leading up to it the tickets to actually see him live were I believe $70 apiece which was high as hell. Regardless, the show sold out and it turned out that he was only interested in finding out if the show would sell out at such that price and not in the actual cash, so upon coming to the show everyone who bought tickets were refunded their all of the money.
to be honest i dont like the show and have never really liked his stand-up but i watched the video all the way through very engaging. Nice job
I'm an artist, kinda a nobody really, but the thing that keeps me waking up in the morning is when I accidentally stumble upon work that makes me feel like i did in high school when you discover a new band or movie that makes you feel like there's more in this world than what everyone usually tells you is important. Really glad I got a chance to feel that again with this channel, thanks dodford, these vids are really great dude.
The wife and I still guffaw, chuckle, and scream and roar with laughter every time we watch these. And I am only 40. I hope the younger kids can get into it. It's true comedy. Just like Red Foxx, Norm McDonald, and even Tom Green.

I'm going to be 30 in May, and as I've gotten older, Seinfeld has grown on me more and more. I've truly come to understand, and appreciate his drive & style. He's _always_ known that his style is for older people.

Just like Jerry, Dave Chappelle knew when to call it quits on his own show. Both are legends and both shows will go down in history as rewatch gold, Jerry, gold! I also find it interesting that both had amazing comedy co-writers. Jerry had Larry and Dave had Neal.

Great video, but you cut off the Anthony clip way too short at the end, he says it was the worst show he had ever seen, but then he saw him do a different crowd and it was way more his thing. it was a compliment to his adaptive nature.

I love his show comedians in cars getting coffee. That may not be the correct title but you know what I mean. My favorite episode was when he had Michael Richards. I always respected Seinfeld for sticking up for Michael Richards. Kramer is not a bad guy. He's just not a great stand up and was having a bad day and wanted to hurt the people in the audience that were giving him a hard time. I have had so many laughs from Jerry Seinfeld. The biggest laugh I ever got was watching him react to Larry King asking him how he felt about getting canceled. Jerry went crazy.

As a former hotel manager who had him stay with us three times.. He is pretty rude to others. He thought he was quite a bit above everyone else around him. Be it staff or other guests. He requests another mini fridge with a certain type of spring water and sparkling to be put in his room, then never drank any of it once. One might assume a lot of acts are like this but it's actually quite the opposite. I've had Alabama, Journey, Foreigner, Oakridge Boys, Boys II Men, Willie, Nelson, Jeff Dunham, Ron White, etc. and most of them were extremely kind and even went around and signed things, bought drinks in the bar, gave the staff gifts.. Totally different. I actually had my overnight person call out when Boys II Men played and had to work the desk that night after working during the day, when they got back from their performance and came back and saw me again and found out, they went to a restaurant nearby and bought a bunch of buffalo wings and came back and hung out with me at the desk and ate wings and drank captain morgan for a couple hours. Awesome people.
It's saddening/disgusting how some of his co-stars and even this video brush over just how inappropriate and disgusting that relationship is/was.
