Also crazy to think John Williams wrote two of his best soundtracks for Steven’s two masterpieces in one year. Legends.
Both those scores are AMAZING. The Jurassic Park soundtrack was one of the first CDs I ever owned as a kid and it shaped my entire musical life.

I feel like the mental stretching of going from one movie thats about his own heritage as a Jewish man where they suffered and were persecuted by the Nazis and brutally killer for no real reason to Dinosaurs roam again how cool would be insane.
I don't know what you do for a living but I have people that I know that I have worked with for years and I could not do "our" job without them (I count on these people to think like I would)

Dude, the end of the video where Steven Spielberg got his first Oscar win from Schindler’s List is monumentally insane. Even his speech literally made me weep in sheer joy, knowing how much hell he underwent while going back and forth between dinosaurs and the Holocaust. It's genuinely insane and crazy. And like the audience the therapy joke made me laugh because it's honestly completely reasonable after those months he endured doing the two completely different movies at once. It’s a true success story that’ll always choke me up for the rest of my life.
This doesn't even factor in that he was working on Animaniacs as well around the same time! One thing also worth mentioning is that while filming Schindler's List, Spielberg used to call Robin Williams on the phone and ask him to make him laugh cause the whole process was hard to handle. He watched episodes of Seinfeld every night as well to lighten the mood. When he showed John Williams a cut...John was so moved, he had to take a walk, and said Spielberg deserved a better composer. What touched me the most was the final scene where the real people he saved and the actors portraying them visited Oskar's grave....such a powerful ending

He will forever remain a G for this. Filming both an entertainment film and a film detailing the most painful parts of history isn't something easy.
I was talking to my Dad about this and even he was amazed as well, Spielberg did want someone else to do the film but all the other directors he offered it to said only he could deliver the film justice in memory of the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their surviving relatives including the many thousands of descendants of the Schindler Juden.
Dude what he did was absolutely astonishing making one of the best blockbuster movies of all time and the best movie ever made about one of the worst atrocities in human history in the same year, the man is in anyone's top 3 director of all time for this alone especially with schindlers list that movie took everything out of everyone that was on that set and with the preasure to get it right because it was such a heavy subject matter, amazing what he did he deserved that oscar and it is imo his best movie and he himself would agree with that

One thing that admires me about Spielberg is that he's always pushing forward. 1941 didn't work? Fine. Be proud that you worked with John Belushi and move on. There are lessons in success and failure. He listened and kept creating knowing the obstacles as shown with this hectic year of 1993. This is a great showcase of how diverse Spielberg is as a storyteller. Schindler's List is a brutal experience which had me question "Did Spielberg really direct this?" Then he can go and do wholesome family and adventure films that bring out your imagination in a fun way.
A similar thing happened in 2005. He did War of the Worlds and Munich in the same year. Both movies were shot at an incredibly fast pace. It actually took him about seven months between start of filming and release for War of the Worlds (which began filming in November 2004 and wrapped in March 2005 using five different soundstages), and Munich began filming the same day War of the Worlds released which was June 29 that year (mostly filmed in Budapest rather than Munich). Munich was released less than six months later on December 23rd. He also released The Lost World, Amistad and Saving Private Ryan all within a span of 14 months between 1997 and 1998!!
1941 was an epic movie. Watching it in movie hall was a rare experience

@@thegrimeliteyes, Bergman was productive beyond comprehension. Apparently he would work frenetically, up until the brink of breakdown, and then turn himself in to a hospital, where he would be treated for fatigue and burnout. This would then repeat cyclically.
Most filmmakers would have been happy making these 2 films in the same lifetime. He did in the same year and that is insane!
And Danny, this was such a well-told story. Really well put-together.
And they would stop after making two masterpiece, Spielberg still keep going and made Saving private Ryan and Band of brothers.
Everyone knows that Great Directors usually have a handful of movies that are argued to be their best. Kubrick has half a dozen, Scorsese has Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, etc, Tarantino, Nolan, Kurosawa... but none of them could boast making something as astonishing as Jurassic Park and Schindler's List in one year. He literally went backwards and forwards over the films day after day. Truly a competitor for the title of Greatest.

I remember seeing JP in the cinema, I was 13, it blew me away. A few years later I watched SL and it is one of my annual watches, it is a masterpiece. Thank you Steven. Also thank you for putting this together, I can't imagine the stress of going between doing post-production on JP and filming SL for that long.
You watch Schindler's List.......... annually? It's one of those prime examples of a movie that is really good, but also (for me at least) cannot watch again or will have to take a 10-20 year gap between viewings.
@@darkknightniner9862 Yeah I saw SL about 2 years ago and I don't think I will again for a long time. It is quite possiblly the most moving picture I've ever seen, but there's no way I could handle watching it annually.
No exaggeration, one of the best RUclips videos I've ever seen. Was in genuine tears by the last 5 minutes. You told the story incredibly, and the editing was beyond TV documentary-worthy.
I've been SEARCHING for a video about this specific point in Steven Spielberg's career, and you made this in the best way possible. THANK YOU! It will always blow my mind that he was actually able to tackle these two giants within such close proximity. He is truly the greatest filmmaker of all time.

I cryed because i was so happy that he got his appreciation he deserved. Steven Spielberg is with no doubt one of the greatest filmmakers in film history. Filming these two movies back to back, supervising the post production and editing one while filming the other for two of those months, and occasionally checking in the Animaniacs team during their story meetings since he executive produced the original show, and all three were able to debut in the same year. Steven is one dedicated artist and that’s what I really admire about him.
This one-two punch isn't just your every day movies. They are two of the best cinema has to offer. Making what Spielberg accomplished in 1993, the greatest directorial feat we may have ever seen.

Also keep in mind that Spielberg had his Amblimation studio at this time still running. The feature that was being worked on at that studio the same time as those two films was We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story. And one of the reasons for that film’s production troubles was because of those two movies cramming up his schedule. As much as he REALLY WANTED We’re Back! to work and be a bigger part of that magic, the living hell of working on two movies made it the most difficult part of his or anyone’s entire career!

That was a beautiful tribute to Steven Spielberg and made me cry. I have always loved movies but Steven Spielberg was my hero especially as a teenager, which is when Jurassic Park and Schindler's List came out. I was obsessed with Jurassic Park. I bought a book about how it was made which is one of the few books about how a movie was made the Jurassic Park was so popular they put that out. But I have to say Schindler's List was such a powerful moment for me too because I never quite looked at WWII that way. Most of my introduction to World War 2 was through Indiana Jones. I can honestly say I watch Schindler's List more often than I watch Jurassic Park. But that year was one of my favorite years and it is been a long time since I've cared about who wins an Oscar or not. Back then the Academy Awards was my Superbowl. It was such an emotional Oscars that year, more than many other years
Spielberg deserves the amount of respect he 100% deserves. Also I met him once and it’s so surreal.
This right here, the fact that he could create both of these movies simultaneously -- one, a crowd pleasing, technical and and virtuosic popcorn movie, and the other a solemn, important, deeply personal arthouse film -- this is why Spielberg has no rival and is the greatest filmmaker of all time.

Oh my! The viewers reaction leaving the theatre really made me emotional. I cannot even imagine how watching this movie back in the day at the theatre would feel like. The sheer outburst of emotions with a collective audience. Even watching this video made me emotional and also the fact that Spielberg won so many Oscars. What a day would it have been for everyone who had watched the two movies.
I rewatch Jurassic park every few years and its still incredibly good, Iconic and defined what a scifi thriller should be. The fact he made it at the same time as another Iconic movie in a completely different genre I have a lot of respect for Steven
The amount of time and effort you put into every minute of your videos really shows and they just shine. It truly feels like a gift to be able to watch your content for free. Jurassic Park was the best theatrical experience of my life. I immediately read the book after seeing the movie. It was the 1st book I read that wasn’t required by school 😆

I was born in 1991 I am 33 this year, but so how I wish I was born in the late 70s early 80s to enjoy Jurassic Park and cry at schindlers list, back in 1993, and clap for him winning in 1994.
Can't even begin to emphasize how well-presented this video is. Amazing story told in an amazing way. And it's a miracle that we managed to get two beautifully done films in the same year. Massive props to Spielberg

This is one of my favorite videos. I can’t think of a more deserving person for best director than my #1 favorite . Both of these movies are incredible but there’s something about schindlers list that is so compelling and strangely beautiful that it’s hard to put into words. Great video! In August 1993 when I was 20 years old I went to Hawaii for a conference on the making of Jurassic Park, and toured many of the locations in Kauai. I met the producer of both Jurassic and Schindler’s List at that conference, Gerald Molen. Watching both movies win Oscars was pretty awesome. Both great films. Spielberg is exceptional.

What is even more mind-boggling is that Spielberg would do this all over again in 1997 with The Lost World and Amistad. Now, Amistad’s subject matter obviously isn’t as intense or draining as Schindler’s List, but it’s still insane that he directed two major films in one year TWICE

Jurassic Park and Schindler's List are both perfect. This is how we know he's a master of film.
It's not even just that. During the making of both he was also approving characters, voice actors and storyboards for Animaniacs since he was the producer. During Schindler's List, the film was just such an emotional chore to make that Spielberg actually played the voice recordings he'd gotten of upcoming stuff with Pinky and The Brain to help people be able to feel happy again.
Spielberg is an unparalleled filmmaker- to have made two of the most groundbreaking and successful movies of all time in one year, and at a point that was only halfway through his amazing career is remarkable and will never be repeated. I remember at the time a lot of film critics were snobbish and crapped on Schindler’s List, they soon were silenced when it cleaned up at the Oscars and that movie is immortalised forever while those critics are all gone and forgotten and their crappy opinions all forgotten.

Fantastic video analysis. Impeccable editing and commentary. One small critique, while the CGI (and the risk to opt for that over tested stop-motion) was huge, Stan Winston's groundbreaking practical dinosaurs were integral & worth mentioning as well. The seamless integration of the two was breathtaking. Their recognition of when to lean on one vs. the other to achieve the utmost realism was masterful.

Those were literally amazing. He is an amazing artist and person. The Oscar's part literally had me on the edge of shedding tears. Because he deserved every single one of them. It's genuinely insane and crazy. And like the audience the therapy joke made me laugh because it's honestly completely reasonable after those months he endured doing the two completely different movies at once.

A wonderful video essay/documentary/piece of art depicting one of my favorite filmmakers. You've had me in awe with your great content, but this video went far beyond anything I've seen. The retro television graphics, concise script, and intriguing info were just amazing! This definitely inspired me as a content creator!
