I still don’t know why he did, what he possibly had to gain from it, the only thing I could conclude is that this guy must be endlessly curious if he’s looking all the way in my corner of the world for artists and musicians. I will tell you a story about what a great guy Nardwuar is: I’m a full-time musician in Canada and to make a living I have to play with multiple bands. One of the band’s I had the good fortune to play for was the hard rock band Helix. Now, I did this from 1997-2004. There was a music message board I used to frequent (I won’t say which cause A: it blows now and B: I want to respect Nardwuar’s privacy.) Anyway, I took a lot of heat on this board, as I was in the band after it’s 80’s glory days. That, and the fact that the nature of this board was sarcasm, negativity and mocking. Now, I admit it could be fun, posting on there. But some times, people would dog pile on others. And get really, really mean. Well, on one occasion this happened to me (posting drunk and high didn’t help me). And I got taken apart...at times I’m sure I deserved it. But, one time, someone found out personal information about me, posted and shared it-and some of the posters became really hurtful. Now, in perspective, it wasn’t a huge deal-I didn’t lose any sleep over it. But it was cruel. Well, Nardwuar private messaged me and proved to me it was him...and he was a sweetheart. He really took the time to tell me not to believe what they were saying and that I should be proud of my Helix past etc. He also defended me in the board discussions. Point is, he didn’t have to do this. He was hiding under the cover of anonymity, and a username, and just could have let it slide. But he didn’t. I’ve never told this story as I’ve respected his privacy but at this point it’s almost 20 years gone past-and frankly, that BOARD is now past it’s sell by date. But quite frankly, he deserves a good word for this! Thanks again, Nardwuar...and keep on rockin’ in the free world!

Nardwuar is one of the single best interviewers to ever do interviews. He researches his subject deeply, he doesn't ask the same cookie cutter questions and the most subtle thing most people never notice is that he almost never (possibly never) brings up negative aspects of their careers and instead conducts the interview as if it is a game of "This is your life". I also find bands or artists that treat him poorly I tend to lose a lot of respect for even before the point where he was universally known for his interviews, it just shows the type of person they really are underneath it all and Nardwuar inadvertently brought that to the light for all to see.

Nard is truly a special dude. Having grown up in Vancouver and being interested in alternative/local music, he was always around, and nearly anyone involved in the scene has one (or a hundred) stories about him. I saw him and The Evaporators perform for free a number of times in high school. I eventually ended up being neighbours with a friend of his who is one of many folks in Vancouver that provides him some of the crazy anecdotes he surprises interviewees with.
When I went to UBC for my undergrad, I joined CiTR (seeing the old Student Union Building radio offices in this video was a trip -- they've since moved to a newer building) and started writing for Discorder. I actually got to interview Nard for the magazine as a part of the 30th anniversary for his show, which was pretty nerve-wracking. Interviewing the legend of interviews himself! But he's incredibly sweet and happy to chat with fans at shows, the radio station, or when you inevitably bump into him while digging for records.

The fact that he thrived in a genre filled with actual violence, toxicity, and people who are actually underprivileged and from the bottom bottom and make it to the top vs rockers actually makes a lot of sense. I would’ve given them the excuse of that time was different but cancel culture only started within the last 7 years before then it was still you can say whatever you want, so that doesn’t fly especially when rappers have never been one to bite their tongue when around goofy people but the mere fact they all rock with Nardwaur means that there’s something genuine and overall liked and admired by people in the most demanding and abusive music genre and that alone demands respect and applause.

People with ASD are very often misunderstood and I think that is what is going on here. Out of context, a lot of people have trouble reading Nardwar as the sweet person he is and may instead think that he is mocking them or trying to get one over on them. Bully types have often been bullied themselves and then go on to bully others. I think that a lot of the people who take him wrong are people who see him as some kind of aggressor who is making fun of them so they get really defensive and mean. In a lot of his early interviews, I'm sure people had zero context for who he was and that he was a good guy. I'm just glad he didn't let those experiences change him because he is a rare gem.

He speaks and behaves just like my little brother who has ASD! I am on the spectrum too, but I’m much more shy. My brother will speak to anyone. Sometimes people think he’s being rude because of his intonation and pedantic language, but he is always being genuine. He’s not making fun of anyone. He’s trying to engage.

Most of the people that have treated him badly weren't "rockers." Most were crazy punk bands, who's scene he's into himself. Most rock artist are extremely kind and appreciate him. Not all rap artist are kind to him either. A lot of WuTang clan were pretty rude to him as well.

I love that it was mainly the hip hop community who welcomed him and actually realized how great he is as an interviewer. Although I do think it’s really sad that he was mainly inspired by punk rock and he was treated so poorly by some of tho ppl who I’m sure were his hero’s before that.

@@siomaras161 this is so true, I love punk rock and heavy metal and grunge almost all subgenres within but some of the most notorious gatekeepers are rock fans. So ironic that rock is supposed to mean doing what you want but then the old schoolers get pissed when a band starts playing more than 3 chords and calls them sellouts.
