The voice actor for Maul is Sam Witwer. Before this, he was widely known for his work as the voice of Starkiller from the “Force Unleashed” video game series. He also previously voiced The Son, one of the powerful beings from the “Mortis Arc” of Clone Wars that you have seen months before.
If you really want to understand Mother Talzin’s motivation in this arc, After Season 5, read Darth Maul: The Son of Dathomir, It’s a 4-part comic based on a 4-ep unproduced arc from Clone Wars before it got cancelled by Disney. You can even do a reading stream of it.
The fan-made audio drama paired with the visuals from the official comic adaptation that you can find on RUclips is an ideal way to slide it in during Season 7 (it's occurring simultaneous to Episodes 5-8 of Season 7). The voice actors do a pretty decent job and it's basically like watching a bonus 2 episodes since it is only 40 minutes long. But, yeah, it helps wrap up a couple lingering plot threads that they weren't able to fit into Season 7 and sets up a couple threads for the series finale.
You wanted a reason Chris, I got you. George Lucas wanted to do so much more with the Prequels but he could only do so much with a trilogy, so 3 years later after Episode III, he wanted to expand upon the Clone Wars and he saw Animation as the avenue to do it and he himself poored his own money and ideas into some of the best arcs in the Clone Wars, of course he had some wacky ideas for episodes too, like The Zillo Beast 😂.
Also another thing to consider is that Lucas is a huge fan of animation and doesn't view it as a "lesser" art form. So him telling these stories here in his mind wasn't him relegating it to a "lesser medium" or anything like that. In reality too, I think he honestly enjoyed working on the Clone Wars more than making any of the movies themselves. He could just be the ideas guy and have Filoni and his team execute them, see the works in progress, give his notes, etc. In a lot of ways, the Clone Wars is sorta what I think George Lucas always wanted to do. He always said he's an editor at heart, and the only reason he wrote and directed Star Wars was because no one was making the stories he wanted to edit. With Clone Wars, he could assume the role as ultimate editor/show runner and tell all the stories he always wanted to.
I believe there was literally no real reason, George came in one day and went "yo I want to bring Maul back so let's do it" There should be some Clone Wars BHS stuff on youtube where Filoni mentions it
A cool detail: You can see bits of metal pieces floating around on Mauls legs and rest of his spider body. Meaning he’s been using the force all this time for years to keep his lower half together. Also that fact that Mauls been eating people just to survive….. lol
Morley was Ben Diskin, he did an interview with James Arnold Taylor on his youtube channel and talked about this episode. He also plays AZ in Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, Venom in Spectacular Spiderman, and One and Two in Kids Next Door. Awesome voice actor as well
17:34, 19:24 "Son of Dathomir" actually was a 4-episode Clone Wars arc, one of 10 arcs (including "Dark Disciple", a Ventress arc) which all were sadly cancelled by Disney after them taking over Star Wars. That arc was turned into a comic and features more of Maul, Taluin, Dooku, Palpatine, Grievous and so many more. That arc also explains Mother Talzin’s motivation in this arc.
Actually no, because you guys seen Solo, you have heard Sam Witwer before. Tne body was Ray but the voice was Sam because Sam voice has been associated with Maul

Maul totally has lines in Episode 1, though. They're not many, however, so you are definitely not alone in having forgotten them. He had a raging revenge-boner already then. ;) Maul: *Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the homing trace is correct, I will find them quickly, Master.* Sidious: *Move against the Jedi first. You will then have no difficulty in taking the Queen back to Naboo to sign the treaty.* Maul: *At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have revenge.* Sidious: *You have been well trained my young apprentice. They will be no match for you.* I loved Maul back in Episode 1. He was the coolest villain ever to me as a kid, but like you said, that was visually and thematically. Clone Wars fleshes him out in such a fantastic way, though, that he's now unironically one of my top five favorite Star Wars characters of all time.
40:57 Ironically George's original plans for the sequel triology were to make Maul the main antagonist with the red female Twi'lek Sith named Darth Talon as his apprentice.

That question is answered later on in the series. Maul openly admits that his Master did not tell him the details of his plan at all. Maul had no idea about the events surrounding Order 66 or anything like that. Darth Sidious made sure to keep him in the dark.

In the deleted scene pack for the show, Savage held a woman hostage to make Obi Wan surrender during the fight. Then after Obi Wan did he put a lightsaber through the womens head…. Talk about brutal lol
The funniest thing about the Obi-Wan/Ventress relationship is that in the books/comics, Ventress eventually falls in love with Obi-Wan's friend (and fellow Jedi), Quinlan Vos, and she ends up dying to protect him
Mother Talzin cares more about Maul and Savage over Ventress since Maul, Savage and Feral (the Zabrak Savage killed after he got swole) are her biological sons. That why she more involved with them going out her way to give Savage the necklace to find Maul. (Guess Feral got the short straw)
5:42 Funny you should mention that. In the mid 90's there was an Energizer Battery commercial, where Darth Vader was sent after the Energizer Bunny. And just when he had the rabbit cornered, the batteries in his light-saber ran out; he even screamed in frustration in a similar way to Savage.
12:06, 16:13, 33:37 actually, there's one scene in phantom menace where darth maul spoke. Darth Maul: "Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the trace was correct, I will find them quickly, Master." Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. When Maul says chains are the easy part He's such a badass character
The whole "Rage keeps me going" shtick Maul has works! It doesn't work for Reva and the Grand Inquisitor in Kenobi because the performance and pacing doesn't sell it. But here, we see EXACTLY what that means, where Maul is all like "My singular hate for YOU kept me going all these years", there's a seething, heaving LOATHING in every syllable. And that right there, shows exactly how intensely the Dark Side can burn, to keep Maul alive so long, maddeningly insane.
33:40 "Tatooine is vastly populated, if the trace was correct, I will find them quickly master" "At last we will reveal ourselves to the jedi, at last we will have revenge"
I love how they keep some of the feline qualities that inspired Maul...his lion jump is an awesome nod to his Panther prowl he did in Phantom Menace when he was waiting for the laser door to open
Sam Witwer has become the voice of Maul. Ray Park, who plated him in Phantom Menace and still does his fight choreography, had a few lines in the film, but Sam has taken Maul and run with it.
What a return for Maul gets reborn then commits several child murders then sends a message to Kenobi where he beheads the grieving parents of the dead children execution style DAMN
Maul is actually the perfect character to survive getting cut in half. His race the Zabrak have two hearts and are notoriously hard to kill with a ridiculous tolerance for pain. Little known fact night sisters and Dathomirians like Ventress are human-zabrak hybrid subspecies. It's why the women don't have horns.
A cool little comparison when Maul is "reborn" and immediately grabs Savage is that is the exact same thing that happened with Savage and Feral when he got his power up. The difference being when Savage got his upgrade he was completely entranced in the magic and killed Feral when told to do so. However, Maul after he grabs Savage, you see him calmly regain control and lets go of him.. They even have the same eye opening sequence.

I love how Maul's first clear thought after many years of mental turmoil and insanity is "Revenge. I must have revenge." It doesn't get much cooler than that.
Maul was a really cool character in the Phantom Menace, but it was his reintroduction here in Clone Wars and the rest of his story that made him my second favorite Star Wars character, right after Ahsoka. An ability of the dark side is to survive what would otherwise be serious/fatal wounds by feeding off of pure hate and revenge. We've seen this with Maul, Reva, the Grand Inquisitor, and even Anakin/Vader on Mustafar. Technically Maul had like two lines in the Phantom Menace, just fyi, but they were practically whispers and easy to forget. Believe it or not, the best of Clone Wars is still yet to come.
Maul:I hate the way thay you walk! I hate the way that you talk!! I hate the way that you dress!!! I Hate how you say hello but thats just me I guess!!!! Obi Wan:.........😳
One of the coolest details; pieces of the metal spider body are floating and shaking midair. So Maul is holding that thing together by sheer will of the Force. But if he's doing that, begs the question why he chose spider legs, to which the obvious answer given his decayed mental state, that's how he sees himself. A hideous monster
Colin Trevorrow’s script for Episode IX Duel of Fates did work in some Clone Wars/EU stuff like one of the Knights of Ren having the Darksaber and Rey and Kylo’s final confrontation happening on Mortis, though it doesn’t look like it would have involved the Father, Daughter, and Son, it was just going to be a cool backdrop. I don’t want to put the Duel of Fates up on a pedestal, like it would have fixed the whole Sequel Trilogy, that it wouldn’t have had its own problems, but it at least seemed like it was making an attempt at working in EU stuff, and most importantly actually doing some world building, something the other two movies in that trilogy were sorely lacking in. Which makes one wonder what the "creative deferences" were that forced Trevorrow off the project and gave it back over to JJ. And yes, I will acknowledge the unfortunate passing of Carrie Fisher as major contributor to Episode IX’s problems, and that was outside anyone’s hands, there’s no one to blame for that tragic happenstance.

The Force shall free me.
When Maul says chains are the easy part
He's such a badass character
25:30 Suraj has hype overload.
One of THE BEST storylines in Star Wars, we have reached
You guys should watch Sam Witwer in the recording booth voicing this scene, its incredible.
Morley's voice actor is 🔥 🤣 "I get the leftovers!!!!! Yahahahahahaha!!!!!!!"
Sam Witwer also played in Smallville as Doomsday. He has a Twitch channel where he plays games.
The 2 episodes per video was a good call. It was a ton of fun to watch with you guys. Keep it up
Sam Witwer is the best there could be to voice Maul. They couldnt go wrong with him in any way 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Darth Maul spoke in the Phantom Menace
Please react to Sam Witwer voice acting Dark Maul for this episode it's on youtube and it's fire
39:33 LMAO Micky...that gave me a good laugh
They're gonna love season 5
Congratulations on getting to this point, Normies. I hope you’re not afraid of heights, because the show keeps going up from here.
33:40
"Tatooine is vastly populated, if the trace was correct, I will find them quickly master"
"At last we will reveal ourselves to the jedi, at last we will have revenge"
I love how they keep some of the feline qualities that inspired Maul...his lion jump is an awesome nod to his Panther prowl he did in Phantom Menace when he was waiting for the laser door to open
Sam Witwer has become the voice of Maul. Ray Park, who plated him in Phantom Menace and still does his fight choreography, had a few lines in the film, but Sam has taken Maul and run with it.
What a return for Maul gets reborn then commits several child murders then sends a message to Kenobi where he beheads the grieving parents of the dead children execution style DAMN
Sam Witwer is fantastic, probably my favorite voice in the show.
This is where the fun begins
Maul is actually the perfect character to survive getting cut in half. His race the Zabrak have two hearts and are notoriously hard to kill with a ridiculous tolerance for pain. Little known fact night sisters and Dathomirians like Ventress are human-zabrak hybrid subspecies. It's why the women don't have horns.
Formerly Darth, now just Maul
A cool little comparison when Maul is "reborn" and immediately grabs Savage is that is the exact same thing that happened with Savage and Feral when he got his power up. The difference being when Savage got his upgrade he was completely entranced in the magic and killed Feral when told to do so. However, Maul after he grabs Savage, you see him calmly regain control and lets go of him.. They even have the same eye opening sequence.
It was 1999. I was 10. And words cannot describe the amazement in the theater when that second saber appeared. Potentially unpopular top 3 movie moment for me personally just cuz I love Star Wars
Sam witwer is a badass. He streams on twitch sometimes
No Im pretty sure in the movies maul said like 2 words
40:35 there is literally smth called sith sorcery and in conjuction to ol Palps master, this could explain a lot. But we only get a glimpse of said sorcery once and so about Palps master. Missed potential.
as someone who watched this show when they were like 10, i cant help but laugh whenever they say its not a kid show. maybe not to you, but to me? was my favourite show as a kid.
13:42 My man Darth Maul is back!!!! 🙏🏽💪
I love how Maul's first clear thought after many years of mental turmoil and insanity is "Revenge. I must have revenge."
It doesn't get much cooler than that.
I love that he’s mumbling the with creed as well.
Maul did speak in The Phantom Menace. He had like two lines when speaking to Palpatine.
Maul is one of the best parts of Clone Wars ! And one of the best Characters in all of Star Wars !
Mickey: Why keep him alive?
Yes, "why" indeed. 🤭
I’ve watched this series a million times, but seeing y’all geek out made me geek out like it was my first time watching!
I have been waiting literally foooooorever for you guys to finally see the return if Maul. Prepare for a continuously darker series now. 😈
Sam Witwer with a top tier performance
Few things are more consistent in Star Wars than Obi-Wan being captured and abused.
Maul coming back is so good! Witwer is perfect as his voice. Can’t wait to see the rest of the arcs!
You have just met Sam Witwer the best VA on this show. Fun fact he is the shore trooper that arrests Acadian Andor in episode 7!!
All the praise for maul goes to Sam witwer aka fucking starkiller! Also them not killing obi is just like with Vader, the people they hate the most they don’t want dead only to make them suffer.
Sam Witwer is basically the gocie of darth maul imo. Hes a fucking star wars treasure being starkiller and the voice of maul and putting so much passion into the role
Darth Maul and Savage Oppress 🔥
Foreal
It's been said before, but the fact that Maul's first clear thought in years is that he "must have revenge" is so cool and will never not be cool.
Love the two episode format!!!!
