I’m happy to hear that about the netting. I’ve been on the fence about it, going from less than 100 plants last year to thousands this year. This is giving me the confidence to skip it. Thank you!
I really struggled to start lisianthus seeds - this is the first I have heard of them. Your beautiful flowers and your explanations inspired me to try again or seek them out next year for my small home garden. Thanks!
NORINE NAGLE Struggled for 3 months to start the lisianthus seeds but found out it was the grow light with 3 branch lights off amazon I was using. Needed a t8 light bulb or the small plastic green house kit with led light I'm using now on a heat mat. Got sprouts in under 10 days, need to mist with a spray bottle at least once a day. Good luck, hope this helps!
Sooooo helpful. Was a retail florist for 24 years. Now starting as a grower. Lizzies have always been a favorite of mine and customers alike. Seed starts have been very painful. Looking forward to getting plugs!
Thank you so much for your information about lisianthus. I grew them from seed for the first time this year and would have got them out in the garden much earlier than I did.
I was going to rip out & replant the bed after my lissies were done but I left them in the ground to try to save seeds from them, & found they are flushing back! I'm glad you mentioned that! I've never heard anyone mentione that!
If I cut a bunch and one or two are open, will the others open in the vase? My first year growing them. Also I wanted to say, I ordered your lavender bath and body oil, it’s absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much!
If the buds are swollen enough, they will open. If they are small and tight, they won’t open. Thank you so much for the compliment on the body oil! It’s our favorite product. Would you be willing to email us so we can use this as a nice product testimonial? 💜
Wonderful and informative video. I grew Lisianthus from seed this year. It was a LOT of work. I am just getting blooms now and they are lovely…but next year I am going to buy plugs. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
I tried lisianthus (plants purchased online) for the first time this summer and they did great, even in our heat (zone 7B, north MS). They have developed new basal growth, so I am hoping they might even survive the winter for me. Everyone who visited my garden wanted to know what that flower was!
I planted seed directly in May here in Maryland 7a. I will need to pot them up and store inside for the winter, right? When do I replant for early spring bloom?
@@PepperHarrow *It dawned on me that you may be too busy to read this long story! Maybe someone will enjoy it.* So, can I tell you a story? THIRTY ++ years ago, we were stationed in Ft. Hood, TX. I had been drooling over pictures and descriptions of lisianthus for years, in the Park seed catalog. Finally planted some seeds, babied them, kept them covered with gauze and misted frequently during transplant, and they were so magnificent. One day driving kids to a post recreation area, I turned the corner -- and there were blue lisianthus as far as the eye could see, all wild. After all my babying! I learned later that they were native, also called "prairie gentian." Comeuppance, but a happy one!
Great info thanks. I want to try from seed, Nicole @ flower hill farm had good luck with it, figure it'll be fun to try. I don't know if we everyday gardeners could buy plugs, I don't have a tax number to sell, altho I am on Airbnb and could maybe use that biz, I do have cut flowers up there for all my bookings. Oh and I filed this video in my save folder for flowers.
I'm interested to try your method on our flower farm in Upstate NY zone 5b. I have a few questions, what group do you purchase to get an early harvest? I usually plant my lis. in early May. and I would love to get blooms from mid-June-November. What group of plugs do you get for the late planting in June? I was reading groups 3 and 4 do better in warm summer months and 1 or 2 are used in winter production in the greenhouse. I don't think many people do succession planting for lisianthus. I also pinch back half of mine for a staggered harvest. Thanks.
Thanks, Jen. If I understand correctly, you plant out the tiny plugs without potting up and growing on in a greenhouse. Is that right? It would be great to save that step (especially with as many as you are growing), but they are so teeny when they come in the plug trays. Thanks for the clarification or explanation of how large they are when you put them out.
Went to a green house in Kalona and they were selling rose rim, blue rim, green and purple lisianthus in 4 cell packs for $1.75. I bought her out. She told me that they were a cut flower variety. Alot cheaper and easier than buying seeds or a plug tray off the internet.
Blessed day lovely flower farm...I have question is lesianthus come back each year? What is the zone for this type of flower thank you blessing for all.
@@PepperHarrow thank you. I just trialed Lisianthus this season and experienced fungal disease as they turn wilt and die down. Do you apply any fungicide like rootshield before planting?
I ordered lisianthus seeds, they’re Echo Double Mix. I’m not sure how to ask this question,How do you know what kind or variety they are. I’m in zone 5b, should I order a variety thats best for my area?
This was a VERY HELPFUL video on growing and harvesting Lizzies! What is your spacing when you plant? I heard Steve and Gretel Adams say that they plant 2 Lizzie plugs per hole for stem length and weed control. I plan on trying that next year with at least some of mine. I have been growing Lizzies for years, but the last couple years I lost some to weeds even WITH landscape fabric. Not fun! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!--Sarah
Do you cut the begging growth to encourage more branching earlier in the season? I have heard some people do this. I have not and I also have not been able to get a second flush either. Do you fertilize on a regular basis?
Most of the spotting we see is usually from big damage. We get pretty dry around lisi harvest time so we don’t have to worry too much about rain. But if we do see a rain coming and they’re ready to harvest, we get them harvested out before the rain comes in. If they’re still immature, we don’t find rain to damage them before bloom.
So, when you are ordering from Farmer Bailey, you want to order for 6-8 weeks before your last frost for the first shipment? I was wanting to order for March but it looks like they only have shipping through December 2021.
❤ Lisianthus. Thank you for your tips to growing this beautiful annual.
I have just discovered Lisianthus at my local nursery, and I love it!!! I had never seen this flower. Great tutorial. Thank you for sharing.
Me, too! Just yesterday when having bouquets made up to greet friends arriving at airport. Simply gorgeous!
My first time trying lisianthus and they are on the verge of blooming. I can't wait 😊
Lisianthus is my favorite flower! I'm so happy I stumbled across this video. I'm a subscriber now.
Gorgeous lissies!!! Loved your puppy dogs and kitty cat!!!
Came back to say, I think this is your best video of them all!
I’m so glad you made this video! I was wanting to succession plant Lisianthus next year but wasn’t sure on timing. This video was very helpful❤️.
Haven't watched yet, but want to say- I grew lisianthus this year for the 1st time, they were sooooo beautiful! I will always grow lisianthus!
Thanks! I want to try.

Gorgeous!
Thank you fir this very helpful information , I lov
Have you made any arrangements for us yet? I hope I didn’t miss it. It’s so much fun watching you create these beautiful arrangements.
Will have to do a new video
So beautiful.

What ph does it like..is it heat tolerant to what heat zone and temp.
Who do u buy your plugs from?
It's native to Texas so it does well in the south. Our soil is neutral so we've never looked at the PH requirements

Does that mean that, after the 2nd flash they have to be uprooted and new seedlings planted?

Can you make some videos about woodies you have in your farm.
Do you pinch your Lisianthus? If yes, when? Thank you.
How far apart do you plant your Lisianthus?
Can one pinch off Lisianthus for later blooms?
What are the opinions on all the unopened buds per stem?
We leave them on. Not every one is going to bloom. They're also pretty even though they won't open.
Please tell me where you are. I am in zone 5b Csnada

Nope! I think you might be referring to Farmer Bailey. We sourced some of our lizzies through him.
@@PepperHarrow Oh okay!
Gorgeous rose color. Plus your saving the birds and other critters by not using netting.

In our zone 5 it's an annual
Omg I'm gonna follow you, where are you from btw?
Iowa
Is lisianthus an annual or an vivace plant?
Thanks for sharing your tips. What kind of fertilizer do you use for Lisianthus and how often do you apply it?
Just a basic granular at soil prep and will do another application after harvest to help with the second flush

We plant at 6"

When do the lisianthus bloom that you plant the end of June? I'm also in 5b zone. Thanks
In september

We do not either. The soil is fertilized with a granular fert when the soil is prepped and we'll fertilize after harvest to help with a second flush
Hi! My field grown lisianthus, particularly the dark purples, get spots on them from rain. Do you find that as well?

But if we do see a rain coming and they’re ready to harvest, we get them harvested out before the rain comes in. If they’re still immature, we don’t find rain to damage them before bloom.
Question, with plugs, how much time do you plan before bloom? Thanks
3 months from planting to bloom
Do the buds bloom after the whole stem is cut??
Only the most swollen ones. The smaller ones won’t open.
Will these grow in Iowa?
Yes!

More stock is added for spring deliveries later this year or early next year.
What store do you buy these plugs from? Any website to provide?
There's a link to Farmer Bailey in the description.
Are they deer resistant ?
Yes
How do you keep mice off of your flowers? Or is this an issue for you?
We haven't had any issues but we do have nine cats! 😂
I always think the netting around flowers necks must be stressful for the flower. It’s strange. But of course if it’s a must, then it must be done.
great idea for a video!
