      @@enixpvp4340 Screed what? The concrete was wet enough to self level no need to screed it around. Ever considered that he doesn't own a corner trowel? He definitely dressed the edges after he stripped the forms. The wooden post are exposed on the back side they'll drain there encased in concrete in the ground any way. Finally this isn't a porch it doesn't have to look good it's probably for his boat or a trailer it's a car port not a patio

    I could see that cracking in one year, forget the stress cracks?

    • @MikeHeath
      @MikeHeath 5 лет назад +2

      I don't think he did forget the stress cracks. I'm not sure what stress cracks even are though so maybe he did. There are certainly no control joints though. Keep in mind that there are two types of concrete: concrete that has cracked, and concrete that hasn't cracked yet. As the concrete cures over time, it will shrink and crack. Control joints are purely cosmetic. They don't prevent cracking. When done properly, they control where the cracks will occur. If there are no control joints, the concrete will crack where it wants to. Control joints certainly don't have any impact on how much stress the concrete can handle.
      There's enough iron in there that the cracks won't separate regardless. The concrete is also 6 inches thick which is plenty for this size carport so even without the iron, assuming the dirt underneath is stable, I couldn't see this concrete separating much regardless.
      If it were me though, I would want control joints. I would also want the concrete to be screeded first to ensure the surface of the concrete is in the same plane. I would also want a smooth trowel finish so the surface would have be floated first to bring some cream to the surface. I also prefer the edges of the concrete to be rounded to prevent chipping (and injury! Square concrete edges can hurt if you bump it wrong!)
      No offense intended, but it's clear Andrew isn't a professional concrete finisher. But if the customer is happy, does that even matter?

    Before people whine that the slab didn't have a proof-like mirror finish encrusted in diamonds with gold nuggets embedded throughout, as they did in that other video, Andrew gives the customer what they ask for. If they want a chocolate slab, Andrew would go down to Colombia and harvest the cocoa beans (all by himself), helicopter the beans up to New York, fabricate some kind of chocolate refining machine in his workshop, and the customer would have a giant Hershey bar in their driveway within 3 days.

    I’ve done a bit of concreting in my time and as long as the owner is happy about the price and the way it was done then there should be no problem. Here in Australia we use heavier reo. Mesh and usually no extra rods around the outer edge and our mixture is a lot drier, but horses for courses. Usually really nice concrete slabs costs more than average ones and some ppl just don’t want to pay the extra. Love your videos Andrew

    You might look into getting a tool called a walking edger. It's just a flat piece of metal with a curve on one side that puts a nice rounded groove down between the form board and the concrete. Makes it a lot cleaner when you pull the form boards off too, as it won't take the nicely floated top bit of concrete off since it's a nice tapered edge. That one detail makes good concrete work outstanding. I always enjoy your videos.

There are those of us who take pride in our work. If this were a footing or something that was going to be buried that’s one thing, but if people are going to see it, at least take the time to level, edge, and trowel it smooth like you give a shit about your work.

    • @fhuber7507
      @fhuber7507 4 года назад +1

      The mesh mostly ends up at the bottom.
      .
      If its worth 6 inches of concrete its worth using AT LEAST # 3 rebar on 12 inch centers and supported on pieces of broken concrete bricks. (which won't fail to hold it up)
      .
      Then he poured it too high. It shouldn't touch the siding. It should be 2 inches below minimum.
      .
      I would have insisted on jacking up the awning and cutting off the posts so they could be properly attached to the concrete in a manner allowing replacement when needed (even if it is 20 years away) Without doing that, he condemned the posts to rotting out much faster.
      .
      His method of leveling was OK.. but he sprayed water into concrete that was already a wet mix (weak) thus weakening the concrete.
      .
      As was said in a MASH episode... he didn't pour a floor, he poured oatmeal. Its going to crack apart in just a few years.

BTW, I have some corners on the steps in front of my home that were drilled so railings could be put in them. It was after the porch was poured due to a change in it and building code in requiring them. The corners fractured from the stress on the railings and I'm chiseling that out. I plan on using high strength fast setting concrete with some holes hammer-drilled into the existing steps for Tapcon bolts. So you mentioned too-wet of a mixture will weaken it. 12:42 If Mr Camarata had recorded it with Nokia 7650 instead of its 4k cams, same people that say leafs hurt the concrete, would say it was a Bigfoot walking across.

      I agree Super Trooper is a azzhat he obliviously has no idea on what it takes to do concrete , He shows his intelligence on the the subject through his ignorance of it . I commented very respectfully i thought on what would have made the job better but he attacks me personally for trying to help . Andrew I am sure knows he pulled the form to early as you can see the hunks of concrete that came up with the form as he pulled them , otherwise there would have been no reason to trowel around the edges as he did . The finish result shows the trowel marks where he filled in the voids in the concrete that came up with the forms . Super Trooper should put more effort in learning about what's being done than attacking people .

    Hi Andrew you're getting more advanced at handling concrete next bit of kit you need is a small power screed there great to vibrate the concrete a bit before you float it nice job
    Would love to see some of the keyboard warriors handle a load of concrete on their own they would probably crap themselves when they see it coming

      john kennedy I don’t think Andrew really needs a power screed for the size of pours he is doing, but they are nice for wide or large pours. I suppose if you are working by yourself, a small one could be nice since it would speed up the process a bit. I’ve always done it all by hand.

      I agree, power screeds are getting so cheap it would be well worth it. Plus, I think it would up Andrew's game.

      @@Grakoham hi a power screed doesn't just level the concrete it vibrates it packing it in tighter the denser the concrete the stronger it is like using a poker on shuttered wall or Foundation

    You are getting it done, and I'm sure at a very competitive price. Like your incredible practical approach, and how you are just getting it done! Greetings from a Norwegian concrete worker.
