35:51 I love Josephine Baker. For reasons beyond her obvious beauty. It is worth it to read one of her biographies. How she dressed to perform, how she danced, were all 100% her creation. She became extremely wealthy in a short time in Paris -- she was a superstar. Also, unlike in the United States at the time, no one in France cared about her heritage. If anything it made her more fascinating and gorgeous to everyone because her appearance was less common. Did I mention how beautiful she was? She was already a star when she arrived in Paris, where she lived the rest of her life (I would have too -- photographs from Paris at the time look incredible). It annoys me a tiny bit the extent to which the French "claim" her as French. I'm glad she was buried in the absolute most important place in France, but the French really do play up how French she was (uhhhh, she was American not French) and hardly mention the fact that she was an American. I love how playful and un-inhibited she was -- and creative. I am such a fan of hers. ❤
An enjoyable lesson . I love the Art Deco period and it's art . A shame you didn't mention the French liner L'Antique , she entered service before the brilliant Normandie serving the south Atlantic service . Her amazing Deco interiors inspired the interior designers of Normandie . Sadly , she caught fire in the English Chanel after a very short service career ........... the same fate would befall her more famous fellow liner a few years later .
Art deco was also influenced by cartier getting influenced by indian jewellery. The tutti frutti is an example. Then the pearl drop art deco jewellery was influenced by the marathas of india.
At 22:09 the bracelet with the pink roses is so much better designed than the bracelet with the red. The stems of the rose form a shape that look like an Egyptian hieroglyph in the pink one. The choice of pink and black for the thorns was also excellent -- very interesting (more creative than green thorns, also it conveys 'I will make your heart bleed') and beautiful (the green in the red bracelet design isn't harmonious with the rest of the bracelet). The dark reddish pink colour of the stones in the pink one is incredible -- the artist got just the right shade. Without the flag-red of the red bracelet right next to it, the colour of the pink one appears closer to red than pink. Even the way the white stones are put together with each other is so much more interesting than the red rose design.
I don't know why she starts talking about white men here -- in this space (jewelry, fashion, dance) women were always the focus, at least in the few hundreds of years before the 1920s. The focus didn't shift in the 1920s to women -- it was already there. In Paris, has there ever been a superstar 'white man' dancer like Josephine Baker? No. No one is paying to see that.

Your videos are beautiful and rather stunning. I do however have issue with your presentation with some of thee most beautiful objects of art, engineering and social norms as the typical. Art Deco served, and was created only for the 0.001% of a vary affluent small class. Your representing it as anything otherwise is a ruse. Art Deco was and remains the very last movement of high art. I ask that you not lower it to the common.
Please keep this producing

Very good talk, thank you very much. The emeralds should return to Colombia.
And YOU should go back where you came from as well
