    My teacher always insisted on the importance of mastering 3579 and 7935 voicings (my goal was sight-reading & playing standards by ear at jam sessions), and although always sounding familiar I had never caught the Erroll Garner influence until now. The best part was the quirk of sounding like the relative third chord when you're practicing alone; then becoming something entirely cooler in rehearsals as soon as the bassist kicked in.
    I'm getting antsy at the thought of redoing this whole experience with other types of voicings.
    Thank you for the great video!

    I am astonished how often Bill Evans and Thelonius Monk turn up next to each other on RUclips. I once ate next to them on consecutive weeks, on the same stool at the counter facing out the window of Mister Henry's ("Approved by The Bohemian Embassy") in Toronto, around 1963/4. They were both playing the Brass Rail, back in the days when Downbeat magazine had a Toronto section every issue, and I think the bars closed at midnight in those days. Except for the fine speakeasy scene which reponed with the outside lights off after closing time...

    I really liked the McCoy Tyner one so could you do standards with non-functional harmony?

    • @victorhugodbzenrt
      @victorhugodbzenrt 5 лет назад +1

      It stills "almost functional". The thing is that she used differents voicings and inversions that allows the use of any extension from the chord, wich makes it fells a little non-functional. I guess so.

    • @sappy.2128
      @sappy.2128 5 лет назад

      @@victorhugodbzenrt Ah good point. I didn't notice until I looked at the actual notes on the McCoy Tyner one. She actually used voicings that were stacked in fourths! I think the term for that is modal voicing or something. But it's interesting because since the pedal is C but the chord that seems the most stable is a Gm7, it gives off a really Lydian feel that I really like. Pair that with chords built on stacked fourths which basically gets rid of the 3 and the 5, you get yourself some really cool harmony!
