    I had the pleasure of taking off from Lukla in the spring of 1979. No paved runway, just grass! Yowsa, what an experience!

    I love how it has "24" marked on the apron end of the runway. I mean, who's going to approach the airport and land from south west?

    Crazy thing is that the runway is heaps better than it was the first time I went there 30 years ago. Then it was really scary. Of course I never fly in ... I'll walk thank you very much

    Superb camera-shooting and post editing; very well done!
    The landing strip is built on the steep incline; length is 450 m and width 20m with a staggering 12% slope. No landing aids - Visual (VFR) only between 7 am to 12 noon because of winds.
    The elevation: 2800 m (9,180 ft). The approach is through a maze of spectacular mountain peaks and the air is often cluttered with clouds. Flights will often be cancelled and you could be stuck in Lukla waiting for a plane for days on end.

    Helicopter pilots are instructed to fly low over the runway to "Clean the runway" by blowing air. They also look for any metal scraps left by locals on the runway (locals constantly use the runway to walk across) which can cause airplanes tires to burst.

    3:23 - Yeah. Check the rudder 10 times, don't check the ailerons and elevator. Makes a lot of sense when rejected takeoff is not an option.

    The plane that is landing in the very beginning, a De Havilland Canada DHC-6 with matricule 9N-AFX, crashed near Lukla airport in December 2010 (a few months after this video was shot). Unfortunately, all of the 3 Crew members and all of the 22 passengers were killed. :-(

    I have done this landing and take off hundreds of times. In thick fog, 50 knot winds at midnight. If I crash, I just reset FSX and try it again! lol Even using the easiest settings on FSX this is a difficult TO an LANDING. The TO isn't so hard. The landing...

    why did the helicopter land like a plane?

    • @pascalbondon2308
      @pascalbondon2308 5 лет назад +1

      Because it is the way any aircraft (including helicopters) is expected to do when landing on an airport : it has to decrease speed and heigth before reaching the end of the track, and then to roll (or move at low altitude if it cannot roll) until the terminal (which is called taxiing).

    • @IowaKim
      @IowaKim 4 года назад

      Active airports all aircraft follow the same rules. Can't come in willy-nilly. It looks silly, but there is a reason the pattern is maintained-for consistency.
