Lord Voultar, I successfully modded my ps1 with this awesome and kick ass video! Saw it when your video first came out and have been daydreaming of accomplishing this ever since and today it finally happened. I feel like I can take on the world now. Thank you!
This was very sloppy work. If your routes were optimal, you could have saved about 3 mm of wiring and 0.00001 ounce of solder. You've clearly been taking slacking off.
@@Labyrnthdom lol - hilarious cover up of your shame there :D Missing a joke is always embarrasing. Pro tip: it's best to own your shame than try to cover it!
I bought my first PS1 (no kidding 😂) a week ago, I am not in US, so it is expensive , about $22, an SCPH-9002 already modified, 2 dual shock , a 3rd party guncon , and 12 "burning copy" CDs. Although it is 20 years too late, I still enjoy it! 🤣 . Edit : I gave the whole set to my 10 y/o nephew and his 2 younger sisters (5 and 3.5)... Not because I don't like it anymore. I just don't want to make it wasted, because I could only play PS1 on weekends. And oh boy, they love it! They are playing it everyday, because they get school vacation until end of June. I understand that most of the games are rating for teens (I make sure no R rated games ) , but the PS1 games are still "mild" compared to how "scarry" are the smartphone games today (that Roblox incident caused by sicko).
Would it be possible to create an SD card reader that would replace the disc drive, similarly to the Dreamcast GDEmu? Maybe then it could be a simple plug-n-play?
maybe something like a Pi with a usb connector for an external disc drive, and have the controller switch between exposing either the sdcard or cdrom to the console?
Hey Lord Voultar! Thanks for the soldering videos! Learned a lot about soldering thanks to you. I was able to successfully install a modbo 4 into a PS4 slim thanks to you. As well as do a cap replacement on a PVM, which fixed all the pictures problems I was having as well. =)
Just wanted to say, love your videos, and watching your work! Even read some of your old posts before TIZ went down in that... flamming heap of ... something I'm not willing to say, and sorry I didn't get the chance to learn from you while your were active there. Can't wait for the next video, and hope good fortune for you.
Great video. As I've mentioned before there's something similar to the oddly satisfying subbreddit and watching your videos that I find so fascinating and enjoyable. Keep up the great work, man! Sincerely.
WHY DID YOU MAKE THE ASSUMPTION I'M A CHEAP BASTARD TO BUY GAMES? I mean, it's true, but it's not very nice to hear you say it. :| Anyway, I haven't watched it yet, but great vid I'm sure! Waiting for mine to arrive, hopefully before Half-Life 3.
I love how it sounds like I'm listening to Solid Snake performing electronics mods. Next video you need to try and slip in a few "Key" MGS1 quotes with no warning 😉
Didnt it start as a complete replacement of CDROM driver chip in the console(virtualizing it), but later they discovered problems with CD Audio and reverted to injecting CD signal into original driver chip? so started with instant loads, but ended up at only speeding up seek operations :(
Hey Bro, I have a challenging project.. it is to remove the psio port of the fat ps1. Install it on a slim ps1. Then be able to use the psio on my ps one slim.. after it had been setup of course.. Could you help....???
I've heard games load faster off SD than CD on PS1. If your PS1 is already hacked, perhaps a software option + PSIO might be in the works as many PS1 systems are already modded.
I have a PSIO took a year to get after ordering. I have about 100 games on one 128gig sd card. there"s a software interface you can download from the psio website that will help .Some of the roms have to be converted to a file the psio can read and this software for the most part works really well .This interface also allows you to stream a rom from your pc straight to your PSIO via a usb cable. Wish this was covered on the video.
It's pretty clear that this wasn't a PSIO product review video.. This was a video made to help those who might feel overwhelmed by the modding/soldering requirements of the product..
great vid but id suggest if anyone uses a fibre pen hoover the residue off or wipe it off with a kitchen towel with isopropyl alcohol on so fibres stick to it, if you wipe it with your finger and not wash your hands then wipe an eye you could have a very sore eye from the fibre dust
I'm waiting for an easier solution. I'm sure a GDEmu/Rhea/Phoebe style plug-n-play board wouldn't be too hard to make. All it has to do is generate the code the Playstation needs on boot, then pass to the SD card. I'm sure you could fit that on a board that interfaces directly with the CD laser's ribbon cable so it doesn't require soldering.
I think the biggest glaring issue here is that later versions of the playstation (yours is probably the newest that still has it) don't have an expansion port anymore. and the PSone definitely doesn't. also years ago, I installed my own mod chip. is it compatible with those things? I think my playstayion is actually a 5500 series. no memory card? heck, It'd be better if you could use the PSIO as a memory card too.
Real good timing. Getting ready to order one. What console you recommend more? I have two (with expansion port) SCPH-7000 and SCPH-5502. Or that.. whatever?
While it's emulation, you can pick up a PS Classic. It's $50 to $60 now and that thing has been blown wide open. You can easily load ISOs off a usb and play them on that.
Voultar can you do an sd set up process ? There’s not much coverage on that aspect on RUclips It just seems jarring to follow the installation then not show the vital part
I thought the same, but PS1 disk drives are horrible now and weren't even reliable in their heyday. I got the PSIO and Im very happy with it, it's $20 more than XStation but it's an easier less destructive install, and you can still play audio CDs and the random disc-based game you have around.

Very cool man. But for all the mods I have seen. I never saw anyone tried to make a module that mimics the optical drive with the original drive connector on the board to enable a flash drive or even a hard drive and maybe even USB. This would be the master of mods. 🤔
0:01 - 0:14 to answer that question, I would just go out and buy a fat PS2, a sata hard drive, a cheap 20 dollar knock off ps2 modem with sata port, and a free mcboot memory card. I'd get to play all the PS2 and PS1 games, and some PS1 games can even take advantage of faster load times!
Forgive my ignorance and/or lack of hearing due to watching this on my cell phone if you've already covered this, but does the cd portion still work with the i/o device removed from the back? I only ask due to cutting traces.
Isn't easier to just play PS1 games on the PS2 ? Since is hardware BC you are still playing "original" hardware and also PS2 play the games in the original resolution they were design for : 240P, not even PS3 can do that.
Always a pleasure to see classic consoles being taken apart and modified. Excellent choice of music as well, I detect some vintage SotN.
I can't wait to get the psio I ordered.... six months ago.
LOLE!
The only reason I have this one is because RetroRGB sold it to me.

Quick question:
Does this mod cripple the PS in that it can only be used with the PSIO attached?
Good question
No, the modded PSX can be used without the PSIO attached.
why is there a loud beep sound at 18:22 ?
