The flat bottom Ron Arra pencil that Strike Pro makes is pretty cheap and would likely work much better with that kind of current. It just wants to glide on the surface a lot more then the round bottom types that you’re using. It’ll allow you to avoid having to reel as fast as you are to keep those round bottoms on the surface and thrashing. Give it a try. It should cost you less than 20 bucks if you can find one.

I own Gibbs & Guppy lures but I find the 6" Tsunami Talkin Popper XD to be a better alternative. Cast just as good, floats during fast current so you can work it slowly down current without even reeling, comes with 4x VMC hooks, cheaper and will last longer.

I agree! They cast well and make plenty of commotion, and they don't get sucked down so easily. I changed out the hardware though and put a single 5/0 VMC connected by a 330 lb Spro barrel swivel

I totally agree, I find the Talkin Popper XD is a lot easier to use, more action and casts just as well.

It'll last longer as long as you don't bang it on a rock, the plastic isn't very strong so it'll crack.

The Gibb's Pro Series Canal Killer with the long, flat cut bottom has a crazy windshield wiper motion and it casts almost* as good as the Guppy. However, the best pencil Popper I've ever used was from Mike's Custom Plugs and it's called the "Ditch Witch". Outcasts a Guppy, and the action is equal to, or better than the Gibbs Canal Killer, it's built like a tank (6x VMC hooks, Spro 500lb barrel on the super thick gauge wire), and it has some kind of extremely thick glazed coating so the plug doesn't get destroyed after a dozen fish....truly unreal lure....his HD Swimmer has replaced my 9" Sebiles as well! Unfortunately they're sold out, but he's making another batch in October so maybe I'll grab you one and send it to you for when you return to the ditch!

Those are freaking beautiful plugs! I honestly cannot imagine being able to afford one of his tackle boxes, this has really got me excited about tinkering around with the airbrush and learning the thru wire rigging lol.

MillhouseMod thru wiring is super easy. Look up “Dave Anderson thru wire plug”

You using 5/0 vmc hook on your guppy? By the way, is guppy sink or float? Thank!

Did you think that having trouble working the Guppy could be that its a little too heavy for your 10' rod ? Try a Guppy 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 oz. And you might find that it makes a world of difference. As far as removing your rear hook , its up to you but I'd never recommend it. There's a reason the Guppys have become the standard at the canal as far as pencils go, put your time in with them , learn different ways to work them , and you'll see why.
Its not always about swimming a pencil , I've got many fish on sinking ones and "head shakers". And yes, you can swim the Guppy too.
