Stay in a hotel in Mestre and commute to Venice for the sightseeing. Avoid the crowds and pay a lot less to stay just 15 minutes away. Makes good sense but many tourists are not aware of the advantages of this short commute over the water. The train trip, by the way, was about 3.5 euros each way. What a bargain!
