How to Make a Box, Any Size, It's Up To You!

- To make a box, you need to first determine how tall your contents will be. Make sure the depth is high enough to accommodate your contents without smashing them. This is your first measurement and let's assume it is 2" tall. Write this number down.
Next, determine the largest object in length and width in your box. We will assume it is 5 x 7". You need to add some give room so add 1/4" to length and width.
To determine the size of your paper:
Add
5"width
1/4" for extra width
2" for one side
2" for the other side
total is 9 1/4" for your width
for length
7"
1/4" for extra space
2" for the one side
2" for the other side
total is 11 1/4" in length
You will cut your paper 9 1/4 x 11 1/4" and score each side at 2". Fold your score lines and cut small notches on the sides to the score line. Use really strong adhesive, score tape, tear tape or heavy duty liquid glue. This is the base of the box. To line the box,
measure the sides (length and width) and subtract 1/4" and the sides should be 2" tall so subtract 1/4" and these are the measurements for the pieces to line the insides of your bottom of your box.
To make the lid of your box, the height is going to be 1 1/2" tall. You need to add 1/8" to made your lid fix to the length and width.
Width
5"
1/4" for excess which is 2/8"
1 1/2" for side
1 1/2" for other side
1/8" to make lid fit
total is 8 3/8"
Height
7"
1/4" for excess which is 2/8"
1 1/2" for side
1 1/2" for other side
1/8" for lid
total is 10 3/8"
Cut your paper to these measurements and score at 1 1/2" on all four sides then follow the directions above to fold, notch and glue your box and use the same directions to line the sides of your box for stability. You won't need to do this on a small box and can reduce your lid size by 1/16".
Embellish your box as you would like. You've made a box!
I wish I had found this last night. 6 attempts gone in the bin. Your instructions are very clear & I love that you have them written down too. Thank you.
I love that you choose the "funky" side of the paper!! Well done!!
Hope you make some boxes, it's really fun to do...Sandy
The only good box tutorial I follow
That's so sweet of you. Hope you make a lot of boxes. Sandy
Love this tutorial. Thank you so much. This was a huge help and learning how to make a custom box to fit what I need.
Glad you liked the video and hope you made a box the size you needed. I made another video on boxes, showing how to make one with a shaker lid, in case you want to make your box extra frisky

Clear directions as far as I am concerned. I think these boxes could be so useful. Stuffed with cards is a great idea for a gift. Thanks for the idea and inspiration Sandy!
+Melody Schroder Melody, Thanks so much. Now you can make a box to fit anything. Go crazy with it! Sandy
Was good but you lost me on the lid
Thank you - just made a large shallow box thanks to your clear instructions.
I'm so glad it worked well for you.
Excellent tutorial!! You made it all make sense!!!!! Thank you!!!!
So glad it helped you. I love hearing from viewers and if you ever have a topic you'd like me to cover in a video, please email me and let me know saundralparker@yahoo.com Sandy
This is exactly what I needed, Sandy. I never would have been able to figure out the measurements of the box and the lid. I can't wait to try this, especially during the holidays. I won't need to buy nearly as much wrapping paper.
+Shelli Clarke I hope it works for you. Let me know if you have any further questions. It was good hearing from you. Sandy
Thank you so much. Exactly what I’ve been looking for..
Happy to help. Please let me know if you have any other topic you'd like me to cover for you ...Sandy
Thank you for sharing this clear and excellent tutorial!!
So glad you liked it and hope you make some fun boxes...
Great great great video. I watched so many videos and tried few boxes but couldn't get custom size. Your video is the place my search ended. 5 stars for the way you explained the measurements.
I am SO happy that you could follow my directions and hope your boxes all turn out perfectly. It's so much fun making boxes and filling them with handmade cards, covered notepads, covered planners....and I think people really appreciate them too...Your note made my DAY!! Sandy
Thank you ! This was great.
Hope your boxes turn out great!
It is perfect!! Thanks!!!
Glad to help. Sandy
Love the formula. Thank you. Why would you not just use cardstock and instead of lining it. You could put the dsp on the outside? Still pretty but stronger.
Thanks, I did use card stock, but it's still pretty thin for a box. That's why I line it..The bigger the box, the more it needs lined so it's stronger and doesn't bend so much....I've used heavyweight cardstock and it still needs lined once it gets larger like this one. Hope I answered your question, and I'm really glad you asked. Sandy
Thank you. You made it very easy to understand.
So glad you thought it was easy to understand, and I hope your boxes turn out great...I always line mine to make them sturdier, as paper, no matter how thick, isn't very sturdy.....Best of luck to you and Merry Christmas. Sandy
Great tutorial thanks for sharing.I am new to your channel.I was just curious, which scoring board (brand) are you using in this video please.thanks in advance.
My score board is an old Martha Stewart combination scoreboard and paper trimmer. I could never get the paper trimmer to work, so don't use that part (only to hold the stylus in it's holder)..I love it and the only one similar to it on the market today is the one Stampin' Up sells. The similarities are the way it houses the stylus and the stylus is metal and not plastic. I really like it, and you might try watching on ebay, as that's where I found mine originally. I'm so glad you checked out my channel, and please feel free to ask about anything, as I'm always open to questions...saundralparker@yahoo.com Sandy
Fantastic, thank you
So happy to help...
*Nice Tips.... Just subbed & hit the Bell. I'm going to start making boxes after I use up purchased boxes. 🤗🤗🤗*
So glad you liked the box video. Boxes aren't hard to make, just need to use a thicker weight paper so the box holds it's shape...and the bigger the box, the more weight it needs, as it will buckle in the middle if the box is larger and you haven't lined it, like I showed in the video...Hope you find others of my videos that you enjoy..Sandy
@@craftingforalmosteveryone *I have a Card Box I'm working on in my videos. I didn't make box using up what I have & then will make some. Hope you'll check out my box. 🤗🤗🤗*
Great video my friend. I love the opening with the ribbon that houses your introduction.
+Carol Held That's Rich's skill set, Thanks, Carol.
I think it was fantastic. Great tutorial on your part....smiles
Really glad you liked it. Sandy
I love this video! Thanks for doing it.
Glad to help and hope your box making skills get better and better..
OMGosh. Yep, an example of why basic arithmetic is important. haha. Great video!
So glad you enjoyed it and I hope you make a bunch of boxes. After making this video, I found out that if you use Beacon 3 in 1 glue, it really helps make the box sturdy. If you're in Europe, use Colal Glue. Sandy
I really like your box. I like how you strengthen the sides. I think this could make a very nice gift.
+Elizabeth Dindal It will hold a lot and it will hold heavier things as well. I'm glad you like it. Sandy
Thank you so much for explaining how to make a box. I have mascara, lol, that I want to make lil boxes for, and I can try this your way!! wish me luck.. And again, Thank you :)
I hope your boxes turn out well. I just made a video that isn't live yet, showing how to make a Halloween holder for pencils, that might just work for your mascara if you're only needing to make a box to hold one...Anyway, it might help you...should be up tomorrow...Sandy
@@craftingforalmosteveryone great, thank you so much ):
Very smart!
Glad I could help. Hope you make lots of boxes..
Thank you so much this was so helpful I had to make a 4 x 5 by 1/2 box it came out perfect
YAY! So glad it worked for you!
Hi subscribed I love box videos 👍🌸🦋
Lynn I'm so glad you subscribed. Here's a fun card that has a box built into it. Sandyruclips.net/video/KZ5JJG1wUOk/видео.html
I'm always making boxes and looking for a 'good, dependable' formula' for creating them so I don't destroy my good paper/card stock. I made a sample using your formula with two lids, 1/8" and 1/16" excess and both fit nicely. I didn't line the 1/8" lid but I'm sure if I did, it would still fit. Thanks for sharing your formula. I'm going to work on some smaller boxes too! good job!
Thanks so much for your very sweet comment. If you have any other videos you'd like me to tackle for you, please let me know. I'm always looking for new ideas. Sandy
her hands are funky as like what have you done with those fingers
DearJayda, I am sad that you feel it is entirely acceptable to discuss my hands like I chose for them to be disfigured.
Before you make such ridiculous statements about someone's physical limitations, consider your lack of compassion, your ignorance about medical conditions, or the obvious fact that you just might be a sociopath...definition: a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.
As a normal person would understand the things you said are extremely antisocial and lacking in conscience.
Signed, The person behind those hands
I don't need to make a box for anything - but now I want too!
Once you make one, you'll want to make all kinds of different sizes...Glad you enjoyed it.
You are so amazing in math wish I could of learned more in school thank for your time my box looks beautiful 😍
So kind of you to say...we all have things we struggle with...for me, it's figuring out how to make sure I put magnets on projects the right way, so they actually attach to each other. If my husband didn't edit it out of videos, you'd wonder what the heck is wrong with me...there's only two sides to a magnet, right? haha So glad you liked the box. Sandy
this is just what I needed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
So glad I could help...hope your boxes turn out great! Sandy
@@craftingforalmosteveryone perfect!
YAY!
How do I make a box no lid that is 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5" tall?
It depends on if you want a really sturdy box or just a normal one. If you want a super sturdy one, you'll need a piece of cardstock that is 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" score at 1 1/2, 3, 4 1/2, and 6" then turn the paper one turn and score the same. Go to this video at the 5 minute mark and it will show you how to cut the box and then skip to the 15 minute mark and it will show you how to put it together. Basically the difference in this box is that the sides are two papers thick.
If you want a simple box cut cardstock to 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" then score at 1 1/2 and 3" then turn it one turn and score at 1 1/2" and 3". On each corner, you'll cut the score line up to the horizontal score and then on the small flap you just created, cut a small diagonal piece out so when you fold that piece in, there won't be excess paper that will stick over the top edge. You'll cut all four of your corners the exact same way and then you'll fold all of the scores. Take one of your small flaps and fold it so it meets the side of the box at a 90 degree angle...put glue on the inside of the flap that will lay on the side of the box and hold until it sets up. Hopefully you can use the how to make any size box videos so these directions make sense. It's hard to explain so hopefully between this and the video you'll be able to make your box... If you're struggling, please email me at saundralparker@yahoo.com and I'll try to help. Sandy
The only difference I did to mine is I cut a circle die in the middle of the top and put some clear acetate sheet so I could see inside. Thank you
Sounds like your box is really cute. Here's a video on how to make a box with a shaker top in case you want to give that a try. ruclips.net/video/5aWhePrTEMA/видео.html Sandy
You're picture is very good ~♡
So glad you enjoyed it.
How to make a cake mix box for homemade cake mix?
You can make any size box you want. I give you the directions on how to make the box any size, so all you need to do is figure out how big your cake mix box needs to be to make it.
Thanks for explaining the math. I’m making much larger boxes and have been wasting some cardboard.
I hope it helped you. Since you won't be lining yours with paper to make it stronger, you might try making your lids a little bit smaller.
Where are the comments listing all the dimensions/sizes?
I don't list the dimensions/sizes..I tell you how to figure out how to make a box given your sizes. If you watch where I use a black marker and draw a box, that's what you would do to make your box.
@@craftingforalmosteveryone thank you….
Not sure where the added 3”. One for the top
@@lindazdunich2845 I'm not sure, but I think it is referencing the side is 1 1/2" tall, so you need two sides, making it 3"...if that's not it, let me know and I'll look at it again. If you read the info below the video, I wrote out the directions.
@@craftingforalmosteveryone Thank you. I do now understand.
Thanks gonna make one
+Debbie Lieb Please let me know how it comes out, or email me a picture of it at saundralparker@yahoo.com. Sandy
Waaaaaaa I don’t have a ruler
Not sure how you can determine the size box you need without a ruler.
whats wrong with that hand XD
