A full English breakfast...is the breakfast from heaven 🏴🏴....they are " black puddings" made from pigs blood and spices!!! Contrary to how it sounds, they are delicious fried and are incredibly good for you....full of iron and vitamins with a low fat and sugar count!!!!😮. A full English breakfast is usually a weekend treat....not one you'd eat every day. 😊
Such a great song. Brings me back to my college days. My roommate bought this album "Breakfast in America" and I really haven't heard that much from Supertramp until I listened to the album. It was amazing and "Take The Long Way Home" and EVERY song on the album is great! It became my 2nd most favorite album. "Crime of the Century" is my favorite Supertramp album.
It's a song that doesn't grow old because the meaning is not shallow or trite. It hits you at stages in your life when you don't know where you are heading or when life has let you down. Also, I really appreciate the drums in Supertramp songs. They are always just the right amount at the right time. Listen to the percussion in a Supertramp song and it's always about putting the right sequence of beats in the right moment, rather than just maintaining persistent drumbeats. It allows moments to be "under-drummed" while entering with meaningful fills where it is most effective.
I love English breakfast, except the blood pudding, the tomatos, the mushrooms, and some of the sausages. Missing on your plate are hash browns - a must.
First Supertramp song I ever heard back in the 70's when I was a punk rock kid but knew this was special, Blood or Black pudding is arguably the healthiest part (beans aside) of the full English, not that much is healthy but a must have any time I go to England 🙂
Once again Justin...the groove... stunning.Them gorgeous strings. It's just bliss imo. That voice ❤❤❤ There is absolutely no filler on this masterpiece Justin. It's a constant in my collection. This I guarantee will always cheer your day up . Thanx got this brilliant song by The Tramp. Also hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas Justin..all our love from Wales
Blood pudding is usually called black pudding and is a type of blood sausage found in the UK (and Ireland?.) pork blood, pork fat, cereals like oats or barley and a lot of herbs and spice made into a sausage. Then Cooked. To serve cut a slice the fry until crispy. Delicious. In my view beans play no part in a full English, but fried bread should. Take a slice of white bread, cook in the juices left over after the bacon and sausage have been cooked until golden and crispy.
Young audio engineers... if you need something to reference how the bass guitar should sit perfectly in a mix on ALL speakers big and small, look no further. It doesn't get any better than this.
Heinz baked beans taste great with breakfast and I generally eat them with the black pudding (the black circular patties) and the sausages. Tastes great!. the only clash is the yoke and the tomato sauce of the beans. Tend to try to keep them apart on the plate 😂. Supertramp on the other hand goes with anything - great to listen to anytime anywhere.
There are reports that the lyrics of Take The Long Way Home was Roger Hodgson talking about himself, and how he felt about being in a band/the music business
In the Netherlands and Germany and perhaps other western countries too, we have blood sausage. Cut the sausage into thick slices (1-1,5 cm) and bake them together with slices of apple. Delicious on bread.
We call it black pudding in the UK and it's great. I do like a full English occasionally, especially after a heavy night. I can just about live without the sausage and beans; black pudding and hash browns are usually not about the place. For me, egg, bacon and tomato are the holy trinity - so long as I've got those I'm happy. Mushrooms are always good too. Best song from the album, this.
As an American, a full English is delicious, but not something you can eat on the daily. Too heavy. Beans on toast is a cultural thing over there. Do not question.
The beans go well with sausage, bacon and mushrooms. I'm one of those wouldn't touch black pudding. I guess the full English breakfast dates from the time when people would be working hard all day with little chance to re-fuel, not very healthy food, though. The song is a masterclass of arrangement and production and still sounds great to me.
My favorite Supertramp track and my kids’ #1 dad song. Every few months, my sons and I (I have no daughters) will take a day trip somewhere. We never use a map to get home and it might take twice as long to get back. Of course, music is playing so we’re never in a hurry. Son #2 has tastes that are somewhat in line with yours (Leprous, Tigran, etc. [#3 likes Tyler the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, etc we’ve got you covered]). #2 also emotes the most when listening to music. I had to smile when I saw your moves to the “ohs” in the song. He does the same.
Hi Justin. Dave here, your friendly English food critic here. And my Critic's Choice does not include full English breakfast. This morning, I had a cooked breakfast of two grilled sausages and a portion of baked beans that was smaller than in your picture. I've had black pudding (not for a few years, mind) and it's nicer than it sounds. I think most people only have a full English when they stay in a hotel, because it's included in the price. As for the most filling breakfast I've ever had, how about a pile of Navajo frybread with bacon and maple syrup? Had this at Monument Valley, and regretted it for most of the day. As for the song, I love the infectious poppy side of Supertramp, and John Helliwell's clarinet gives it a bit of a Klezmer sound. P.S. my song ref Critic's Choice is by Chicago.
Beans is optional. Black pudding is made with blood and pork fat with seasonings and rusk. Grilled sausage, bacon, eggs, fried bread, fried potatoes, tomatoes
@@robfractal6820 To those who can't stomach eating black pudding, how about throwing it? I remember one of those travelogue TV shows where they took part in the annual Black Pudding Throwing Championships in Ramsbottam, near Manchester UK.
I know another song by that title: The Long Way Home The Monroes I remember eating full english breakfast 30 years ago at a bed and breakfast in England. Absolutely one of my favorite Supertramp songs. I think I made myself some english breakfast on my own afterwards but I probably forgot about the beans, not because I got anything against beans, I just forgot. Beans makes me think of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, they loved eating beans in their movies. Chris De Burgh has a song named It's such a long way home. England Dan & John Ford Coley has a Long Way Home song too. I don't think I got any blood pudding for my english breakfast during my days in England. I know I have tasted blood pudding elsewhere and I don't like it. I was not aware it was supposed to be a part of the full english breakfast.
Breffus: Bacon, eggs, biscuits (scones ?), your choice of grits or hash browns, orange juice. Or pancakes with butter, maple syrup, and your choice of bacon or sausage. Ice cold milk. Meow.
Black pudding does sound weird, but it tastes good. It's made from pig's blood and the taste is somewhere between pork and bacon, or maybe a bit like pate.
What about breakfast burritos? Americans eat beans for breakfast. Blood pudding you can keep. Yes, this song is a classic that hits every time! Exquisite.
@JustJP This album was truly a "labor" of love for the band - 9 months! Another great song pick! The sweetness of the beans helps with the black puddng - trust us on that. It's not bad and worth trying.
This is one of those songs that would be hard to avoid - it could possibly even been on on the PA system at the local grocery store. That English Breakfast really stumped me about the Heinz Baked Beans - at an afternoon picnic mixed with barbecue sauce yes, but for breakfast?
Hi Justin! Great song from a classic album! Yes, I enjoy an occasional fry-up, including the baked beans! If you ever stay at a UK hotel, they will always have the "Full English" on the menu for breakfast, but to be honest, all that fat and grease first thing in the morning is too much for me! I'm also an Englishman who doesn't drink tea, so perhaps I'll get deported!😀
I’m from England, baked beans are quite sweet with tomato sauce. Those ‘black things’ are called black pudding - pig’s blood - an acquired taste (not for me).
Firstly, pancakes sausage and syrup? People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. If it was a Scottish breakfast you could add haggis beef ham and fried clootie dumpling. I believe the song is about disenchantment with his marriage
I've never been a fan of baked beans (well, my mum insists that I used to eat them when I was about 3 but I'm not convinced) and usually push them to the side but everything else works fine (in a full Scottish, you'll often get fried haggis instead of black pudding. It's great! Honest!) (And of course, it's tomatoes not tomAtoes in a Full English. Get the pronunciation right!) Meanwhile Supertramp once again provide a classy arty pop song much like XTC did yesterday.
Justin, if you ever wanted to see Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame cooking an English breakfast in a suit, you should check out the video "Kingdom of Doom" by The Good, The Bad, and The Queen, another one of his side projects. As far as the song, not much to say. It's really really good, but as an older person who was stuck with FM radio for a large chunk of his life, there was about a two decade period where I never wanted to hear this song again because it was played every day on the radio. I appreciate the musicality and the lyrics, it just was WAY overplayed.
Masterpiece but I've listened it too much everywhere for 45 years. Can't wait for Child of vision, even though U know you've already have done it. Because for me Child of vision is their best song ever. All Supertramp in one song 😍
Great song! The whole album is brilliant! I believe "take the long way home" is meant almost sarcastically. He kept taking the long way home and then lost his life (family). He was so looking for excitement elsewhere he lost where his grounding was. This song never grows old for me. Song length doesn't bother me as long as it sounds complete. I can eat any meal at any time of the day. Food is food. Except blood pudding. Sounds disgusting.
Supertramp didn't achieve commercial success until their third album, Crime of the Century. JP can I encourage you to search out Supertramp's eponymous first album released in 1970. It was a commercial flop and was quite different to the style of their later output but it has some real gems of songs on it and is well worth a listen. Their second album (Indelibly Stamped) was even less successful than their first and I confess I have never heard it so have no idea whether it's worth a listen.
Can't fathom having beans for breakfast!? Try going off the beaten path in southern India, where they rarely see tourists. The only effing breakfasts we could find were spicy/hot 'curries' When in Rome! Took a fair bit of getting used to though!
@JustJP Aye, as a man of the world I'm sure you would! Have a good one my friend. All the best from sunny Scotland! I'm not joking either. It's a glorious, sunny day here, in the North East anyway. Most peculiar! Cheers!
When I was in England I tried the beans but did not enjoy it. Also bacon on the menu will be ham. If you want something like American bacon you need to order stripey bacon.
All great stuff for breakfast - better than pancakes and cereal omg so bad for you - Aussies have smashed avocado on great bread included in their breakfast mostly without the beans but definitely crispy bacon and more - of course Supertramp top all of that even!
nope, I think take The Long Way Home refers to missing what's important in life, instead following distractions that you think will make you feel better...
Blood pudding is usually called black pudding and is a type of blood sausage found in the UK (and Ireland?.) pork blood, pork fat, cereals like oats or barley and a lot of herbs and spice made into a sausage. You take the long way home to avoid BEING at home, where you are reminded you of your failure and lack of being appreciated.
But don't forget along the way, you're allowed to grieve.
so true. i just feel like this some weeks now!...
One of the very finest Supertramp songs.
A full English breakfast...is the breakfast from heaven 🏴🏴....they are " black puddings" made from pigs blood and spices!!!
I absolutely love how this song ends. It's incredibly unique, and it goes down like the smoothest bourbon.
It's a song that doesn't grow old because the meaning is not shallow or trite. It hits you at stages in your life when you don't know where you are heading or when life has let you down. Full English breakfast. The best hangover cure known to man.
Supertramp hits are such production jewels I could listen to them in a loop. Black pudding on the other hand is a wholly different matter.
One of my fave Supertramp songs. It's a fantastic ride.
You should listen to Roger Hodgson's first album- In the eye of the storm, there isn't a bad track on it.
My dad played this record when I was little and I still like it 😀 I'm happy you do too!
Breakfast in America is a perfect album. That and crime of the century I could run on a loop for a few days.
I love English breakfast, except the blood pudding, the tomatos, the mushrooms, and some of the sausages. Missing on your plate are hash browns - a must.
I never tire of Super Tramp. This is a great album.

Great band with a great back catalogue

They were once offered 5 mill to allow it to be used in a commercial but they turned it down.

I'm from Sweden, and I eat Blood-Pudding at least once a month. It's quite common here, and it's delicious with lingonberry jam!
There are reports that the lyrics of Take The Long Way Home was Roger Hodgson talking about himself, and how he felt about being in a band/the music business
It's about a traveller who's home life isn't what it should be. He doesn't want to go home

Great song, got played on the radio all the time back then. An English breakfast looks good except for the black pudding and pureed tomatoes.

wonderful album, wonderful track.
We love beans, don't disrespect the beans. The black stuff is Black Pudding, don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

Like bograt throwing in Yorkshire! Proper black pudding with soft pork fat and blood not cow's fat is delicious. I use to make it when a butcher.
I know another song by that title: The Long Way Home The Monroes

Lots of sugar in the tomato sauce with the beans which complements the black pudding and bacon.

Ha, i guess some have beans. I think most breakfast burritos or tacos are combinations of potatoes, bacon, cheese.

This is one of those songs that would be hard to avoid - it could possibly even been on on the PA system at the local grocery store.
That English Breakfast really stumped me about the Heinz Baked Beans - at an afternoon picnic mixed with barbecue sauce yes, but for breakfast?
I'm a vegetarian and I don't like baked beans. The tomato sauce they use is sickly sweet. Many people in the UK like to eat their beans on toast.

Perhaps overdone (played to death ?) , but the harmonica at the start STILL cries out all these years later. And the lyrics still resonate.

Blood pudding and beans? No wonder Supertramp wanted breakfast in America.
--- the group probably would have taken a liking to pancakes with syrup and hashed browns.
A full english breakfast is great everyday but Black/ blood pudding is terrible.
Don’t get hung up on the word pudding, we are separated by a common language
When I was in England I tried the beans but did not enjoy it. Also bacon on the menu will be ham. If you want something like American bacon you need to order stripey bacon.
Black pudding not blood pudding. Dont look at the ingredients lol. Just eat it Lo
There was a time when I liked Supertramp. They fell into disfavor. No real reason other than it got old.
