It's stated in the bible that separation on grounds of adultery is acceptable, and that in that specific case remarriage is permissible, so it seems like he brings the suffering upon himself rather than following directly in the teachings of God. I’m guessing he is catholic (or at least his views are similar to the Catholics I know). He could get his marriage annulled through the church. He could then find a new partner to spend his life with and not remarry. Just enter a civic union or spiritual partnership recognized by the church. Granted he’d have to find someone with a similar background willing to do that with him and come to an agreement that they understand and are ok with the two of them not being virgins. I just really want him to realize he can move on and though he can’t share those specific “firsts” again, he can have something new with someone else.
