There are loads of versions of the story going round that the band rigged it so the sound would cut out, thinking that it would get them more publicity than actually playing the song. If its true, then I guess the fact that people are still talking about it 20 years later kinda proved them right.

Lol, apparently there was a live audience for the show, and the studio had an in-built "sound limiter" which was in place to protect the audience's hearing. After the soundcheck, the Stone Roses thought it sounded a bit tame, so they turned their amplifiers up. Hence the reason the power cut out to their Amps at the first chorus. Hilarious. And so rock and roll...

No. It was a live broadcast. Apparently John Squire's guitar touched a Mic stand and shorted out the power to the amps etc...some say it was staged but I read an interview with Mani who said it was a genuine accident and they were disappointed. Ian's reaction says it all.
