Standalones are definitely the optimal choice when it comes to getting the most out of your build. One major thing people aren't mentioning alot that I found out is emissions testing. Standalones do NOT support emissions readiness monitors. So, if your state requires smog or emissions testing via obd2, you will not pass. This is why the EPA isnt really concerned with standalone ecus. These units are for racecars. Unless you're in a state with no emissions testing, you are sol for your street legal vehicle.
04/05 US spec STI fall under a grey area when it comes to plug and play stand alone ECU. Most company’s like Link and Haltech make their kits for the 2.0L 04/05 STI
I got an 04 STI and am also looking at what other tuners/ecus there are and I've noticed that aswell. Seems like early wrxs and newer STIs have lots of options for tuning, but early STIs don't have many options available for tuning.
You also need additional sensors for a lot of these. My Link with all the wiring I needed and a digital gauge rather than dash and sensors ended up being around $3400 not including a tune.
AP is still good for most people and basic mods and bolt ons. But if you are going for a high HP build then you have to do a stand alone for sure. Good video with good info. 🙏
Unless you have an 04-06 STI and you want top feed injectors. Someone interested in making some money needs to figure out fooling the TGV inputs into thinking they are still plugged in. In my 06 STI the TGV deletes are also top feed injector conversions...
Just so everyone knows if we have to use other ecu's for daily drivers, those companies are just going to follow in COBB's footsteps to control emissions. It ruins all platforms so if you think this is a better option then you'd just be speeding up the process of taking all tuning out of the average daily driver.
What we need is someone to tune their STI before the update. With their tgv deletes and the other things on the new list of Cobbs no nos. Then once the new update droop for them to retune it to see what is really affected.

I think Tactrix is a better entry level/middle ground... cheaper, fits most folks needs. Standalone is waaay overkill for most people.... standalone is an unreasonable option for most lmfao.

My understanding is they are at least as capable or possibly even more capable of defeating emissions devices than flash tuners are. Like is there anything that protects stand alone companies from the EPA going after them eventually?
I don’t think the EPA is really concerned at all for stand alone’s because of the price of stand alone’s and the associated work to get a stand alone running is a deterrent for a majority of people. flash tuners/obd2 tuners like cobb cost a margin of the price and gave you a lot of accessibility and tuning options. The fact that you can also remap to a emissions safe/stock tune when it’s time to get inspected probably didn’t fiddle right with the EPA. I wouldn’t really worry if I were you. I also think that cracking down on tuning scene isn’t going to do much. Rules are meant to be broken and loopholes are going to be found, that’s literally what car tuning has always been about.
Standalone has always been the better option for performance. You will know the limitations of the stock ECU when you start running higher hp cars. Only experience tuning/ building Subaru's can you make the most out of what the stock ECU can do. Btw, stand alone ECU's has been out for a long time. Nothing new.
I built my newest gaming PC for around $3000 and it’s pretty high end. There’s no way I would spend that kind of money on what’s essentially just a small computer that runs a basic 16-32bit operating system, unless I was building an actual race car with crazy power and required such an advanced tune.

Again, if I was building an actual race car, thousands on a ECU and a tune would make sense because required parameters would probably exceed what a tuner would be able to do with an Accessport.

Unless you’ve already dialed in a map on Cobb over years of perfecting your build and never plan to change a single thing ever again then your screwed. I guess if all you have is an intake and your essential stock tune anyways... for YOU GUYS Cobb is great. But IMO was never much more anyways.
E60 is basically the best power output from my knowledge. At least for Fa's i believe there isnt much benefit on the dyno from going to straight e85 from about E60. Im not sure about ej's. Maybe I'm wrong too as my research goes back a couple years
@@clifford_2zero7 I don't see why e85 wouldn't be better, it would make the engine run a littler but colder and make a little more power. Also Flex fuel means you can put any amount of 91 and e85 in and it will know what percentage of ethanol your at. Which is very helpful if you cant find an e85 station.

I also know you have to pump more ethanol to than fuel to create energy so after that you may be just sacrificing fuel economy as well

Does Access Tuner require internet connection? Tuners might have to have a stand alone CPU that is not connected to the internet to use so that Access Tuner does not update automatically. As long as the end user does not update their Access Port, hmm?
yes it is subscription based, i believe you can only be offline 7 or 14 days, some tuners could potentially try the older softwares that were offline, and use a dealer dongle that cobb used to use.
emtron, link, and haltech all offer essential the same features although emtron has the canbus functionality that the others lack. 99 percent of people will never meet the limitations of any of those 3 ecus, other then potentially running out of I/Os if the person wants to run a million sensors.
Don't spend your money on a standalone just find a tuner in your area that didn't update there acesstuner if they are smart they keep there software not connected to wifi
From what I heard from my tuner is that you can easily go back to the stock ecu if you wanted. Just would need the stock ecu tuned to be compliant with inspection/smog etc.

None of these engine management systems are going to fix the readiness monitors, and most of us live in a state that we have to go through emissions. only thing that you can do is use open source to flash the car, get it through emissions and then buy a standalone system and drive it on the street but that’s gonna be a very expensive and time-consuming set up.

I work in the industry and can tell you from first hand knowledge that the EPA basis most of their legal action around what the current trends are and what people talk about online. The mkre people that start trying to use race car parts on street cars, the faster we lose those as well.

According to the EPA any production vehicle with a VIN is a street car, even if it is modified for track only use. The "track/off road only" term is a made up term that tuners/customers just made up to try and avoid liability, it was never approved by the government. Tryinf to change that is what the RPM act is about. The RPM Act doesn't help street cars, its meant to allow production cars to become legal racecars.

Haltech 1500 is fine for the EJ platform. Dont need the 2500 for the 4 cylinder EJ platform
