Time to drive the new CSL - three little letters, that perhaps unfairly put this car in a position it’s recent predecessors were never in - namely, huge boots to fill.
That name “Coupe Sport Leichtbau” only links right back to BMW’s origins with the 3.0 CSL Batmobile.
Many limited edition cars followed the formula it set. And I’ll show you all of them, including thee E30 M3’s special Sport evolution model, E36 M3 GT special edition, E46 CSL, E92 GTS and finally the M4 GTS!
Each car though not using the name, having the same formula. Namely a focus on Light weight materials, stripped out interiors, power, handling and memorable looks!
Today CSL means Competition Sport Lightweight, and the new CSL carries the theme of all the predecessors forward. It’s the lightest of the current generation M3/M4 cars. Like the original CSL it’s limited to 1000 units, with the UK just getting 100.
#BMWM have redone the suspension, it’s lower with less rubber and give, and a host of new hardware for rigidity. The engine and transmission are upgraded, with more power of 550BHP and more emotional shifts from the 8 speed. Cooling is also heavily upgraded, and much of the interior stripped so you hear more from the new titanium system!
But will it all amount to enough in the end? We will see when we launch control it and drive it on UK roads - sadly on Michelin PS4S rather then the Cup 2.
Coming in the future is another #CSL M4 - the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage - 750K euros, limited numbers coach built in Munich. Rumoured to be 1500 kg, 6 speed manual and more power. Will that surpass this enough? Time will tell.
Today, we need to see how this car will do against the normal #BMW M4 and special cars of the past!

I have to say the first time I saw the M4 I did not like it but over time it has grown on me this current CSL does look great. It’s a bit heavy but who would not want this car in their garage.

You are still the MAN when it comes to depth and breadth of knowledge regarding both the BMW and Merc Vehicle line-up!
Original 3.0 CSL was based on E9, which was replaced with the E28, so true successor was E63. And if you do look at the E63 M6, lightweight was the main focus.

I'd get a regular m4 and buy the Adro replacement front end and carbon body kit. Looks insane and fixes the grill IMO
Adro kit looks horrible makes the nose longer and it loses the carbon vents and makes the front look like an blob fish 🤮
Here in the US my car came on Cup 2Rs.
Either offer a roll cage with no seats, or offer proper lightweight rear seats 💺 would have been the right way to go!

Now that you have a 992 GTS, how does this compare to it?
This gorgeous CSL in M2 sounds and looks a lot more pent up and violent, ready to rumble than the other M models. No chill just destroy. Then comfort mode to grab the misses or some groceries!

The highly anticipated M3 CSL 3.0 is going to be the icing on the cake. This M4 CSL is like an appetizer before the main course. This car certainly lives up to what BMW and the M Division are about. It wears the CSL badge proudly. The M3 CSL 3.0 will be the grand finale to the CSL pedigree.

I love the m 4. Never been a bmw head myself. But I respect the sht out of them. And their M and alpina is top top in the car game of course. Most of all I think they’ve taken on the GT R nismo body shape. The edges and lines. GT R definitely one of my favourites als well for the racing side. I think it’s great. BMW needed a breath of fresh air for the race and track department. Rival Porsche and the pure madness coming from there

breathability clearly not a priority here over supplying to the since few. the cup holders are In the door -- bottles permitted.
Fully agree on the lost back seats.
An option to have a rear bench which could be removed with a special tool for a track day, would give owners the flexibility to use the car as a " family car" allow bmw to make extra profit on the cost option of lightweight rear seats.
And a carbon door card would have finished the race car vibe inside.

Here on the Public-Streets for DRIVERS all over in EUR it seems so, the M4 CSL is THE Vehicle everbuildt, no Supercar, no Superbike, no one else is able to follow it on Public-Streets for Drivers...thats the Difference for rare "CSL".

Thank you for capturing the spirit of this car...I have an allocation and after all the reviews I sense you captured the essence of why in fact it is worthy of the CSL badge. it is special...it is not a GT3! it is a M4CSL. period.

Would have put 285/30r20 tyres on 10.5's and 295/30r20 on 11's, instead of 275/30r20 on 10's and 285/25r21 on 10.5's. Considering the weight and power wider tyres and wheels are needed. Also taller sidewall height will have a more gradual release of traction around corners, better at maintaining traction around corners that are less than smooth and less heat soak for track use. So these two issues are the most non serious aspects of the M4 CSL. As a side note the M3/M4 noticeably smaller rear tyre sidewall height looks not well thought out.
That grill still looks discusting!! The new 3.0 CSL looks a million times better 👍🏻

Such a shame - that car is never going to to worth £120k next year/year after surely its just 80k car. Its very heavy and CSL at all ...its 500kgs heavier than the last CSL. BMW have turned it another AMG weighty cruiser. Drove an E46 CSL again last week for a reminder of what BMW used to do, decent cars.."shades of M5 CS" yes the sheer weight of it. Cant even put the power down.
Not a bad looking car but naming it CSL is a joke.

This BMW would do better times on the track with wider tires on the rear !. 285/30 R20 are too skinny, they should use atleast 305 to the rear. 3.0 CSL will be an AMG and Porsche killer
