Being a Jew of German ancestry I also find the Swastika, apart of history and not only from NASI germany but many cultures. But I believe the Swastika isn't placed in many video games is because some countries have outlawed the reproduction of the emblem. That in of itself is a sad statement of our world.
I used to watch you all the time in 2016, on a different RUclips account. I am currently looking back at the old videos because it's so nostalgic. You also were one of the main reasons I chose to buy this game at all. Thank you, Taff. For making such beatiful memories.
Personally i love cowering inside the sub whilst you cross everything hoping that next depth charge misses, lot of tense hours in spent in silent hunter that way. But the externals are a must for scene transitions and ships exploding as part of a video, that was a very unusual start to a patrol, was a very rare sighting never mind sinking one!
I believe you just sunk one of the (only) three serving U-classes: HMS Ursula, Unity or Undine, assuming the game is totally historic, but i dont think any of them would of been there, its an extremely unlikely sighing, due to the size and the fact there were only three of them in the world in service in '39
+RedKite yeah i doubt its 100% accurate, I know the Polish did have U class subs later in the war so I'm guessing its one of those. Yes Ive never seen a sub before and I wasnt sure if they could be sunk...bizarre start to the war :-)
+Taff in Exile Well, that's not actually true. In '39 we had 5 subs operetional in Danzig Bay. From 31.08.1939 they have different fortunes. F.e. ORP 'Eagle' was tasked with patroling bay and minelaying, after whole pomerania lost, tasked to evacuate to Tallin, where she was deceitfuly took detainee by estonians. After reckless escape at night in costal gun fire, without map, codes and comms, thay navigate throught Sund and serve in Royal Navy. Lost in may'40 in very mysterious circumstances. Without confirmed sunk or any wrackage found after war. Another sub, ORP 'Wolf' in night 14/15 sep'39 broke through Sund passing by with ~60 m german destroyer „Richard Beitzen” and torpedo boat T 107. Later in '41 was heard of ramming and sinking U-22 U-boat. I swear, those crews have to had hell'uva adventures. Even crazier that in "Das Boot" film. From Nov'39-'41 most of polish fleet took part in battle of north sea. 2 dutch-built - ORP Orzeł (Eagle) and ORP Sęp (Vulture) were most modern subs at the time, heavy, flexible in tasks. With 7k Nm range, 12 tube lounchers, 70 crew. They were crowdfounded by polish common people and soldiers. Built in De Schelde and Rotterdamse Shipyards, of custom class, later named as "O 19-class" subs. Made of top quality and very expensive.
The calmness before war in the start of the video def brought back memories to my mind of wars when it loomed on the horizon on us. The calm before madness
Hey Taff I don't know if you realize this, but you don't need to use the periscope for a surface torpedo attack. The fixed "binocular" on the conning tower, called "UZO" was used for such attacks, it works in exactly the same way as the attack periscope. Edit: Derp, nevermind... I just noticed that this is an old video. @_@
I could never get the PC "Silent Hunter" games to install properly so its great to watch this video. The last Sub sim I played was "Silent Service" on a commodore 64! Things have really moved on.
In Laboe, near Kiel there's a Naval Memorial site including a preserved Type VII submarine. Back when I was a child I loved to visit it over and over again which gave me a glimpse about life on an U-Boat pretty early.
Here's the English Wikipedia page for it. It's a little short but still contains decent information en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laboe_Naval_Memorial On clear days you have a glorious view over the Kiel Bay including the city from the Observation deck btw.
Wernher von Kerman if your intrested in the other side check out the HMS Alliance museum, she was built in 1945 for service in the Pacific but the war ended before she was ready. Currently she sits on a keyside in Portsmouth, her periscope is at full extention so you get a fantastic view of Portsmouth historic dockyard and Portsmouth naval base, her interior is set up to give a 'lived in' appearance so lots of period correct items throughout. Thanks for the heads up on the type VII museum ill give it a look up :)
@@themadhammer3305 Thanks for the Info on Portsmouth. May be visiting it when heading over to the UK the next time. There's also a Type XXI in Wilhelmshaven.
Wernher von Kerman its my pleasure buddy, if you go I hope you find it as interesting as I did. Thanks for the heads up on the type xxi im always excited to learn of museum ships I didn't know about before
I really enjoyed the Ture and how you introduced the officers Thanks for that. I hope if you get new ppl this will continue. One point I must make, I hope you have learnt Periscope discipline. Running for any length of time with it up is foolish. Pop it up take readings fast then put it down FAST so you remain unseen. So often I see Utubers running the sims and they will leave their periscope up sometimes for hrs. Then they wonder why they get spotted so often. One guy rage quit because aircraft had him centered and he never got it. Sigh, I am excited to keep going with the series and hope to get the game soon myself. Bless and be well.
Just watched das boot and instantly started this game up. For a while I patrolled around and came across a large unprotected convoy just gonna say the commander in chief of submarines and later the kriegsmarines name was doenitz not donits. Subscribed :-)
I wish there was a mod that utilised your torpedo room to store torps. The fixings on the walls are all there, but the torpedoes just appear out of thin air when they are about to be reloaded, and have the crew then winch them onto the cranes and push them into the tubes... Picky and all, but would still be pretty cool :P
On a semi related note - I've done a bit more research since making this post. The 'fixings' on the sides are actually bed bunks for more crew, and the torpedoes were stored under the deck in that compartment. Though it would still have been cool to see them bring them up and load them.
Binge watching the series now, loving it so far after just one episode. I do wish the crews would speak in German rather than accented English. But this is 4 years ago, no changing it now haha
Probably way too late now but I still play SH5 whilst still awaiting a decent replacement submarine simulator. I replaced the English voices folder with the German one... WAY better! The folder was either already in SH5 or I used the SH3 one... can't remember now. Even the initial intro sequence is far better in German. Must have been a German-speaking option, surely? I have the text still come on the screen but I know a fair amount of German so it's just so much better and more authentic in German.
Never too late... I'm STILL playing SH5! Great video, great series I'm sure but your knowledge of the German language and its pronunciation seriously could do with improving! 🤣
I dont know why but i absolutly love your Careers. Yesterday i looked the Russian and the German and the British Carrer in IL2. I need more Taff XD. Greetings from Germany
You made an excellent point about the use of the Swastika in the game. By removing you risk white washing history. If you white wash history you risk repeating it. Its such a superficial thought process to removed something from history because it offends you.
Its Klaipėda, Lithuania. Back in a day, germans called it Memel. There was a U-boat base from September 1941-October 1944. And in fact, in 2013 there was found sunken U-bot 2363 near of Lithuania coast
The ship that fired on U-31 was a destroyer, not a cruiser, to the best of my knowledge Poland had no cruisers in World War 2. Good video none the less.
Just started watching this playthrough 7 years after it has been posted. Bloody nora, would you have thought that your video would be first recommended on this game when posting this?) Well done mate, video was great!
When you discovered that polish ship, it was a destroyer, not a cruiser, a cruiser would be larger in size, have slighter bigger guns that would often be ( but not all the time) double barrel or more, also, cruisers usually don't carry as much torpedo as a destroyer but can have them none the less, I just wanted point point this out, I have no negative intent with this comment, it's just that I'm very passionate with naval history.
Gonna finally catch up on this series Taff! :D Great so far, looking forward to the rest. Went to see HMS Alliance in Portsmouth a few weeks ago and was absolutely fascinated by it.
Just a question: Didnt like the Captain at the beginning said that after the invasion of Poland the Allies declared war agains Germany and stuff? Why is the first mission being prior invasion at Danzig then?

Lithuanian flag. U-boot designations were by type and Roman numerals. VIIC is type 7 C. Serrated edge did not work against subnets, the ragged remains would fuck up the propulsion. Provided you got through at all. They worked against WW1 nets but not WW2 nets. Cutters were removed from later boats to streamline them. I highly suggest you do not test netcutting with it. Just for info TAFF On your walk around, You notice the aft torpedo tube is external? Only the VIIA had this. Tube V was brought inside the Boat on the VIIB onward. The reason being that the external tube could not be reloaded. This allowed the VIIB to carry one extra torpedo in the aft.
Thank you! I got the Uplay version now, works surprisingly well (it is identical to be boxed one, I suppose). Great fun, especially sitting on the ground of the fjord, with a British destroyer audibly going right over me by just a very few meters, while I try to line up a torpedo salvo on the Warspite.
The Soviet occupation of Lithuania was accompanied by orders on July 30, 1940 to replace the tricolour with a red flag. ... Its yellow colour represents the sun, light and goodness; green symbolizes the beauty of nature, freedom and hope; red stands for the land, courage, and the blood which has been shed for the Homeland.
Do you remeber in what order the mods was installed? Its a mess to try to install mods with JSGME when it say a mod has allready change a file and so on......
well some of the german ww2 maps were incorrect, there is one of the airfield at Duxford where they ave marked london in the complete opposite direction
I play Axis and Allies board game. It's the global version so it's a more realistic version and a huge map. I made a wooden ammo box to hold all the pieces, boards and markers. I also made two dice boxes, one with the American star and one with the Nazi symbols. I had a friend give me grief for it. I told him it was for historic value and realistic value added to the game. Just relax people.
That moment when you were constantly aiming way too high for the polish sub with your deck gun made me nearly jump ... :D Very relaxing and nice series however, will definitely continue to watch.
hi Taff.....ive downloaded the swastika mod for the flags but it dos not seem to apply..how did you do it?..also when you go to external view what do i need to press to move faster ?
Hey Taff, I've never been able to get SH5 to work properly. Did you have to do much work patching or modding to get past one of the early missions? I've always had the issue of when you get to the first real mission after the tutorial, the mission to sink a certain tonnage (I believe 30k tonnes?) off the eastern coast of Britain, I never receive credit for what I sink. I've spent many hours trying, sinking dozens of ships, reinstalled the game multiple times (I'm so freakinng sick of that tutorial mission you can't skip!) and it never seems to work. I've heard the issue is because of Ubisoft's crappy online required DRM. Your missions wouldn't update properly if you couldn't connect to Ubisoft's DRM server or some crap like that even though I have a legit copy through Uplay.. Sorry for the long ass post, I'm just desperate to get this to actually work. This game series is one of my all time favorites (SH3 being my first and favorite, though it's painful on the eyes these days) and I've never really had a chance to play this game as it was meant to be played.
Yes when the game finishes loading go to desktop (Alt+TAB). Start the Windows Task Manager and go to the "process" list. You should have the OSI application in the list running. Go to the OSI process and click with the RMB, select "priority" and click on "real time". The PC will tell you that it is not possible but it will set the priority to "high". This then usually kicks the service and records the tonnage correctly or alternatively remove the requirement all together - www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=218474
Hi Taff. Hmmm... Not sure what to say. Even though I’ve followed the Silent Service since the beginning, I was very curious to the "games dates" in your video (Which I have to say IS good and very informative.). Your sub left from the port of Klaipėda in Lithuania (Which, as previously stated before in comments about naming the flag, is Lithuanian!). The date you left, is 31st August, 1939. Germany did not invade Lithuania till 22nd June 1941. The Soviet Union had control of Lithuania from 15th June 1940 till the Nazi invasion.BTW. It is a boat, not a ship as you stated earlier on in vid. I suppose calling them U-Boats is a bit of a giveaway :-)
lithuania gave controll of memel (his staring area) to germany to avoid war but they were still allowed to use the port for trade and fishing which is why there were boats with the lithuanian flag.
Once my sub submerges, i cannot access deck even after surfacing, the hatch won't open or let me access the ladder. Anyone know how to solve this issue?
Being a Jew of German ancestry I also find the Swastika, apart of history and not only from NASI germany but many cultures. 100% agree, people should be educated in what happened now shy away from ugly truths

Its yellow colour represents the sun, light and goodness; green symbolizes the beauty of nature, freedom and hope; red stands for the land, courage, and the blood which has been shed for the Homeland.
Excellent, need more more and more SH-V !
Do you remeber in what order the mods was installed? Its a mess to try to install mods with JSGME when it say a mod has allready change a file and so on......
how have you managed to get this work? I have bought this on steam and it doesnt work at all. huge graphics problems
a VIIA / 7A indeed. VIIB is a huge upgrade speed and mobility wise though ;w;
Should I get started with SH3, SH4 or SH5?
SH3 is my fav! SH4 if you fancy the pacific theater and play as the US
You hit the sub twice once with the deck gun and then again with a torpedo. But I saw no physical damage. Does this game have a damage model?
yes it does but it doesnt always display unfortunatly
What the hell type of sub was the one you sunk?
I looked all over the internet and found no sub in the 1930s-1940s era that looked anything like it.
Hi could you tell me please did you buy this on steam or as a standalone download ?
I bought it on dvd Year’s ago, some of the mods work best on the stand alone version which is available on uplay
Why do I have my first mission as patrolling the coast of England in my version of the game? Can anyone help?
What mods do you use? My SH5 refuses to work at points.
You can speed up time in the top right
Looks great! Although it looks like they've stuck Edinburgh up near Dundee!
well some of the german ww2 maps were incorrect, there is one of the airfield at Duxford where they ave marked london in the complete opposite direction
Hello, how did you put the observation periscope down?
insert/del raise/lower the scope, F1 will bring up the key card for all short cuts
great video taff, been waiting for this a while.
+Niall Meehan (castlegrogan) Cheers more action to come....as long as i survive :-p
I have this game but can't figure out a minor compatibility issue
How did you get the image of how deep the ships are when you are in the Torpedo Solution thing? Like setting the torpedo Depth and such?
That moment when you were constantly aiming way too high for the polish sub with your deck gun made me nearly jump ... :D
Very relaxing and nice series however, will definitely continue to watch.
Thankyou, glad you are enjoying it
hi Taff.....ive downloaded the swastika mod for the flags but it dos not seem to apply..how did you do it?..also when you go to external view what do i need to press to move faster ?
Thanks man! I'm about to give this a try!
How do you get the option to skip tutorial, I don't have that?
18:10 That was fucking hilarious!
18:06
No, spread your arms out and cue the Titanic flute.
lol I'll never let go jack!
Woops, my arm slipped. Ded
Hi Taff.
I suppose calling them U-Boats is a bit of a giveaway :-)
yeah who knows, it might have been a bad info source used by the devs or probably they have tweeks things to fit the game's overriding story
lithuania gave controll of memel (his staring area) to germany to avoid war but they were still allowed to use the port for trade and fishing which is why there were boats with the lithuanian flag.
Once my sub submerges, i cannot access deck even after surfacing, the hatch won't open or let me access the ladder. Anyone know how to solve this issue?
