  • A rare "4fer"! Meant as a twofer - for Season 655 of the Ukulele, waltzes, and 656, singers born outside US & England (Engelbert Humperdinck was born in India).
(Also would have fit 654, changes, and 653, 1967!)

I do remember this from early days of radio listening. Thanks Wendy!

Thanks, John. I recognized it from back then too, though I only knew the hook and had to listen a few times to get the whole song.

What a lovely Arnold George Dorsey song Wendy. Thanks for that.

Thanks, Jim. Do you know all the artists' real names? I knew of course that Engelbert named himself for the German composer, but I only learned his real name from Wikipedia when I recorded this. This week (656) it is important to look up all the artists!

@@UkeCan1 No, I recalled seeing his real name somewhere, so I looked it up on Wiki when I saw your video.
I do know a few, like Bob Dylan, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, John Hartford and Cary Grant, but that's about it. . .oh yah, Marilyn Monroe.

In 2021 Engelbert Humperdinck was given an MBE )Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to music without the use of cowbell even though there really isn't a British Empire any more.

@@kensmith5694 Well, there's the Commonwealth, which is basically the capitalist version of the former Empire.

@@UkeCan1 Yes, effectively it is slightly. The commonwealth isn't centrally ruled unless you want to say all the corporations are together.

@@kensmith5694 When Elizabeth II died, I was rather shocked, as an Aussie citizen who grew up American, to learn just exactly how powerful the British monarchy still is. She was head of state of roughly 1/4 of the world's nations. I think Charles lost a few around that time, but the same is basically true of him. When I suggested to my new countrymates that perhaps it might be time to boot the monarchy and become a republic, I was horrified to discover how few people here want that, and how intricately embedded the British monarch is into the Australian government. You would have to restructure the entire system of government to get them out. I find the whole thing horrifying.

@@UkeCan1 The UK royal family seems to maintain its power mainly by not using its power. People are not too worried about the power that technically exists for them. Really all they can do is delay the passage of a la by forcing an additional debate. While she was still around, the queen was good for the tourism business.
She took the job of being head of state seriously and put up with a lot of performances that I am sure bored the heck out of her. An interesting thing was that she would often wash her own dishes and stuff like that.

@@kensmith5694 My point is that they still have an enormous amount of economic power built on a history of empire and inherited position that amounts to more of the same thing than you might think. Read about it, it's horrifying.
