Floor Jansen is one of the greatest female vocalist, not only because she has an incredible and versitile voice that everyone loved to listen to but the way she perform to interpret the song by giving her soul and emotion into it is always amaze me.

The beginning background singing was done by young choirboys. Everyone at first thinks it’s Floor but it’s not.

While this isn't a voice comment, I'll say this:
I've suffered depression at different times in my life, and this song makes me always believe life is worth living.
And the truth is, just like the pendulum swings, that things always change, and that there is always a clearing of the storm. There is always a safe harbor one can seek, if one knows where to look for it.
By the way, read The Pit and the Pendulum by Poe. Tuomas, the keyboardist, compared his depression to that of Poe's, when Poe lost his mother, sister, and wife all to tuberculosis.

    • @domfol5515

      Isaiah Welch
I was or still am on that boat of depression, but nighwish and particularly Floor Jansens voice just relaxes things. She is just so amazing, they are amazing.
I heard Tomaus wrote that about tarja leaving the band !
I could never understand that, nonsense ! What you mentioned sounds more like the truth.
I don’t want to bother anyone here , by the way !

    • @Esmeagolly
      @Esmeagolly 4 года назад +4

dominic foley its inspired by the poem the pit and the pendulum but the song is in fact written about his feelings and depression after the Firing of Tarja. Tuomas got allot of flack from the fans, and sunk deep in a depression. And it basicly came down to him committing suicide in this song to save him from himself, the section of mother and father is based on a conversation he had with his parents.

What many don't catch is when floor does change a word in the original lyrics, she does it to make the song sing properly. If you have any songwriter friends, you will probably find that they massage and change the words of the poem multiple times to find a phrase that suits their particular vocal style.
Tuomas seemed to not let Tarja do that to his lyrics, making Tarja's singing seem harsh or clumsy sometimes.

It's more folksy, less metal.

This song was originally sung by their second singer Anette. It was written after the dismissal of Tarja and the ensuing backlash that Tuomas recieved because of the way it happened an open letter after the last concert she performed with them.
He was very depressed afterwards and had suicidal thoughts which is laced throughout the song. It also has ties to The Pit and The Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe.
For more grit from Floor and strait growling watch Yours is and Empty Hope- Live Princess Baltic Cruise. Marco the bassist is so underrated, checkout The Islander- Live Tampere. Also his versions of Ave Maria might interest you, there's one with Floor that is awesome!

The one the writes all the music Thomas makes the songs for the singer. There are a few songs that were written for another singer that Floor is not the best for.... not saying she can't sing it but its just the way the song was written. But the back ground of the song is what helped Thomas get out his inner strife with the release of Tarja. When writing it he was able to get through it. Now initially it was written during the later end of Tarja (he knew she was going to be released from the band) and that is when Annette came in and did the song. Annette is a different type singer than Tarja and Floor (Tarja and Floor kinda are in the same style of singing) So some of the songs later in the albums creation were tailored to Annette style and those songs are the exception.

You are right about there being a backstory to this song. The song is about the final break-up with their first vocalist (Tarja Turunen). A childhood friend of Tuomas. The problems started when she started dating her now husband. He convinced her that she should get more money and recognition as the rest of the band because she was the star of the show. She then also started to refuse to perform in venues below a certain crowd size. They even had to cancel a whole US tour because of that.
As you can imagine this caused a lot of tension in the band. It was then decided that she would record 1 more album and then leave the band. But the situation got so bad that the band decided to fire her at the end of the running tour. Litterly at the last concert (recorded as the "end of an era" live dvd) they fired her after their last song. They did that by giving her a letter with and explanation for the clean break. As an explanation to the fans they also published the letter on the internet (not the best way to handle this). It was intended to be as transparent as possible but it backfired catastrophically. The public backlash of the press and fans was mostly directed against Tuomas.
Who was thrown in to deep depression because of this. He saw everything he worked for so hard for fall apart in front of him and also could no longer see a future for the band. Because he knew that a real suicide would hurt his close family and friends he decided to commit suicide artistically. The closing section of the song is a thank you to his parents that took him in again when he was at his worst. They were responsible for putting hem back again.
There are two more songs that i think that are interesting for you to take look at concerning Floor and her vocal techniques that you have not seen yet.
1 Floor singing a aria from Puccini called "O Mio Babbino Caro" for a dutch tv program there is small interview with English subtitels at the start. ruclips.net/video/Od_qcbw3f5Q/видео.html
2 Floor growling. It is an acquired taste but it is another facet of her versatility. The song is called "Disdain" when she was still in the band called "Revamp". ruclips.net/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/видео.html

Well, what to react to next? I think you have heard Ghost Love Score, Sancta Terra, and now PatP. So you have heard her ethereal head voice, her classical soprano, her belting, her gritty rock voice. There remains:
Ballad singing: Sleeping Sun (live at Tampere)
Folk "Disney princess" voice: My Walden (live at Tampere)
Death metal growling / Hardcore shouting: Yours Is An Empty Hope (live on the Nightwish Cruise)
Sultry cool jazz singing: Slow, Love, Slow (live Orlando 2012)
I think that would be about it. But they're cooking up a new album just now, to come out in early 2020, so who knows what she'll come up with. :)
    Great reaction :)

Don't mind that you have to take pauses for the copyright reasons. No need to apologize: You can actually just use them to give your comments, like you usually do. Then they go smoothly, and us listeners don't pay attention to that pasing, for whoever clicked on this video knows it's a voice teacher making the video, so the pauses should be expected :)
And that's your content, your part in building the whole with others - so actually: 'working for your bread' keeps you from making the copyright infringement :) Being business-like and havin fun combines in your work: you just do that, and copyright is protected too - this time activity is not considered stealing, but laziness is, and gets punished :)

I love Marco on The Islander. I was totally mind blown when I first heard that because I heard this first, and had only heard him distort, so I first thought the male vocal was Troy; which I later realized isn't on stage for this one. I do love his singing too, though. You should definitely think about reacting to 'My Walden or Alpenglow for all three of them singing and some very cool instrumental work.

Totally agree with you about Floor's versatility. Nightwish can now perform any song from their back catalogue, as Floor can sing in any style, any genre, including Tarja's and Annette's. And let's give credit to Marko, as he has a versatile voice, also. Check out 'Voice of my Father', an incredibly powerful and emotional performance from Marko, and Nightwish's amazing cover of Pink Floyd's 'High Hopes', with Marko on lead vocals. Such a shame he has left. We can only hope he will return, some day.
